This is why I hate the US Olympic Trials. Other countries just send their best. We make our world best tryout and crap like this can happen. It would be nice if we gave defending world champions an automatic bid.
I agree with you that the US truals can be a crapshoot( for lack of a better word). It’s like a world class hurdler crashing out because they clipped a hurdles in a race. It’s just the way the US trials go. You can’t really give defending champions an automatic bid every four years, that’s way too long. They do get an automatic bid for the World championships ( just every two years) not the Olympics. Also even though some countries send their best athletes, that is based on races ran that year so Athing Mu would not have qualified on that basis as she’s raced very lightly this year. Hopefully she’ll learn from it and come refocus on racing and come back stronger next year.
How delusional Americans are. The World Athletics Association sets the qualification rules for the Olympics. And each country must comply with these rules. No one here has any discount cards and to qualify you have to run the race. Americans and their eternal feeling of being victims and treated differently/worse. American athletes have the opportunity to receive financial support from athletic program funds, a privilege that many other countries do not offer. Get out of this eternal belief that you are victims and someone treats you differently.

I thought she was, but she won in 2022. People love a good underdog. I personally do not. I mean…she did try and make a move in front of the runner behind her. She made a bad move into the inside. It was a strategic error. That’s why her appeal was denied.
For those saying she should protest…she can’t. She tripped herself up in the mix and sometimes these things happen. It’s really unfortunate, but that’s not how track works. Even if she is the defending Olympic champion. Horrible accidents happen. Now the only way she could protest was if she was shoved which she wasn’t. But we’re all proud of her for getting up and running again.

Not arguing if it was Mu’s fault or Rogers’ fault, but Mu was tripped rather than spontaneously fell over her own feet. As a consequence, perhaps your best runner is not able to go to the Olympics and compete in the 800m. If we want to send our best athletes, a possible solution would be to assess each runner’s times during each of the various trials. If Mu’s fastest time is better than the best time of any of the three winners of the final, Mu is on the team. An alternative would be to have the four runners (Mu plus the three winners of the 800m final), run a final heat. The three that win, go to the Olympics. Accidents, such as tripping, should not be a part of assessing who the best in the U.S. is. [These potential courses of actions would not apply to a runner who fell and whose time in previous heats did not surpass the top three finishers].

She aggressively moved over, compromising runners behind her, same tactic when she took out Akins in 2021. Akins finished last in that race. Karma 2024 Instead of congratulating the winners she sobbed off the track like a spoiled child- Schadenfreude
