    When you use this method for deflex, you cannot use a regular power lam, am I right? If you wanted to use a power lam anyway (to just not have to bother with risers that pop-off), would you shape the power lam in a convex shape to emulate a deflex?

    The oops aside, the technique works, thanks for showing us.

    The speed difference between a straight longbow and a reflexed or reflexed deflexed longbow is not as important as draw length, poundage or arrow mass. The gains you get from a reflex deflex longbow are minimal compared to accuracy and shot placement. If you dont believe me, just experiment yourself with a chronograph and or penetration test. At a given arrow weight, you would need more than 25 fps. Difference to see any real gains.

    how thick is the wood? I plan on putting together a bamboo backed hickory bow, and the piece of hickory is a 1"x 2" x 8", thinking I might have to rip it down to a 1/2" x 2" but I'm not sure...

    Bound to be snags Mike :o) interesting video all the same though - I use either TiteBond3 or SmoothOn but generally use strips of bicycle inner tube to clamp up with - this works well because it puts a constant pressure on and I leave about an inch gap between each turn to allow the air to get to it - I'm just making a couple of bamboo backed Elm Bows and a longbow with a long tapered handle riser sandwiched between a Hickory and Bamboo back and Hickory belly laminates which should be interesting - hope all is good with you - regards - Dale

    shouldn't you put the bamboo facing up or is the purple heart the back of the bow?

    I believe,...I would clamp the handle first,.......but the handle must be flat so you need a bigger piece of wood.
    I believe that I would put the belly down so the tips would recurve.

    I can't get pieces of wood long enough to do a full length lamination, but I can get 1/8 1/3 etc thick prices of wood in 24" sections. I want to use these pieces to make up the limbs on a laminated long bow. Would I be able to glue half of the laminations from each limb onto each side of the riser block? ( I hope that made sense) I'm kinda stressing out over this! Please help!

  • @BoarriorBows

    Okay, Okay... Yes, you are all correct. The purple heart is facing up and will be the back of the bow... Humiliation video to follow... and the correction :)

  • @BoarriorBows
    @BoarriorBows  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah... tried to do too much too quickly. Shame too, because the correction is going to cover the purpleheart. I suppose its better than trashing the whole thing.

  • @JezWalsh
    @JezWalsh 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ermm Mike, is the purple heart your backing? if not then you just did it backwards.

  • @jester3xt720
    @jester3xt720 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    In light of the "Ooops" did you correct and use purple heart again if so how did it perform? I really like the asthetics of the purple heart.

    • @BoarriorBows
      @BoarriorBows  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sandwiched the purple heart between another piece of bamboo, then reduced the original piece to become the belly. Worked very well, so well that I ended up selling the bow to another archer while I was on the range shooting it in. Unfortunately that meant I couldn't show off the final result, but can't let opportunity like that pass.

      I'm here because I may have done the same thing and was hoping someone had asked. My backing was hickory. May try bamboo for the new face.

    Mike - What woods make up the lams and what is the thickness and taper of each lam

    • @BoarriorBows
      @BoarriorBows  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      The woods are not true laminations, but the purpleheart was 3/8 and the bamboo was planed and of varying thickness due to the nodes.

    what kind of glue were you using, and what is the curing process?

    • @BoarriorBows

    can you add reflex/deflex after you've glued on the riser for the handle?

    • @BoarriorBows
      @BoarriorBows  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chad Clopper Yes, its the exact same process, just make sure to secure the handle first. If the wood beneath the handle wants to bend, the handle glue up can fail.

      Rex Frost yeah that was the “oops” in the title. It worked out as I just rawhide and sinewed the purple heart tillered the boo. Successful bow but an expensive waste of materials. Lesson to pay more attention to the bow and less to the camera
