That demonstration reminds me of the old days when a traveling sales man would come to your house with a vacuum cleaner and start putting dirt, and other stuff no one wants on their carpets, and then show how great the vacuum cleaner is.
This happened to me and my Mother when I was around 5, the guy starts pouring dirt on our floor, I am looking at my Mom, like this is insane, the guy was really nice, but his vacuum didn't work, the carpet was a mess, and all we could do is laugh.
All jokes aside, this looks great, I wonder how long it would last in the conditions the experiment was done, I would think that those small pores would clog up kinda fast and it wouldn't be efficient if you need to change the filter often, I don't see how you can clean it, but I have never built anything quite like this.
If you give a man a Life Saver bottle, he'll drink 6000 liters of water, but if you teach a man to filter his own water, he'll drink for a lifetime.
Luv that philosophy. Sounds very similar to learning how to fish.
But the much cheaper life straw could do the gap measure trick
The life straw is just a basic water filter that blocks bacteria and some cysts and lets in deadly viruses. Over time [weeks] the life straw which only blocks bacteria and some cysts has a dangerous level of bacteria growth within the straw as the blocked bacteria massively multiply. A life straw is really only a single use water filter and should not be used in my opinion over several days. There's a reason why it's cheap to buy

Sawyer water filters connect to standard water bottles (Dasani etc). They have a 200k gallon life, they filter down to 100 nanometers/0.1 micron. Cost $22 USD each, $58.47 for 4 pack today 05.20.22.
Extremely light weight, I've been using them for years hiking in the Appalachian mountains. These have become a don't go without them item when I hike. A must have for home/auto emergency kits as well.
Maybe electric car batteries will see a similar price decline over the next decade?
This is a great product for emergency water consumption in devastated areas and for survival, but not regular use.
After watching this video I looked at the year - 2009.. So I thought to myself, "Wow, that was 5-6 years ago. I wonder why I haven't seen this all over the world?" Then I went on google and searched for where I could get a bottle. I found my answer - the bottle costs $163.00 !!!!! For poor Africans facing water shortage and contamination, it might as well be $1 million. R U KIDDING? If he really cared, he would sell them for a cost that is more affordable. You cannot tell me that this costs $80 to make per bottle! I hate greed. There are so many world problems that could be saved it if weren't for greed. And for all those that have flamed me, you miss the point. I am not talking about what it costs me. I buy expensive survival gear all the time. But seems to me this is more like the drug companies selling pills for crazy profit just because they know you need it. Glad there are church groups and other organizations donating time, talents and materials to provide as many communities as possible, safe drinking water. Be an entrepreneur, but don't prop up the poor and needy to make it seem like you care, cause if you did, you would be doing something way more impactful.
At 160 a pop it is expensive. Yes I can dish out that money in case of dire need but then damn it, not everyone wants to go buy it on disaster day. So mass produce it and lower the freaking cost!!!!
Dax Castro Based on their website, the small one (that can filter 4000 liters) costs 120 pounds. Based on 3 liters/day water consumption, you get an approx. 3.65 years, which is 0.09 pounds per day, or 2.7 a month, or 32 / year. That doesn't seem that expensive... The only problem I see is that in places where they'd need this bottle 163 at once is expensive, but there NGOs could step in and come with some payment plans or subsidies for bottles.

I know I agree this is too much money just to to vat19 they have the same thing but a straw and portable but I bet you can get a water bottle and drill a bigger hole....also vat19 give 1-10 life savers to countries developing and it didn't cost much like around 10-20$

@@cheryldahl9192 yes, it seems that way. A marketing pan based upon peoples emotions to bring this product into mainstream outdoors folks. It was 9 years ago, today 30 seconds ago it is 137 Euros to buy off Amazon. Impossible to implement this on such large scales effectively. It's cheaper to fly in water. UNLESS, the technology costs/profits reduced greatly. I worked many years as a research scientist and one of the biggest issues is how to make effective filters at low cost. it appears it still hasn't been achieved.

Way cheaper.
The smaller the membrane the more advanced in technology you go. 0.015 is incredibly small, but now there are similar filters for example the survivor filter pro on amazon.
These types of filters could be sent in some form of charity to the countries in need as well. I'm looking into a portable distiller myself that got me here.

I watched this man talk about this when i was a kid. I thought id never see another advert asking the working class to donate their money to 3rd world contries for filtered water because this man single handedly solved the problem. He should be a multimillionaire. And we shouldn't be hearing about water problems today.

Wonderful. I think Michael Pritchard deserves the Nobel Prize for this invention. Truly amazing and in my opinion one of the most important new inventions of the millenium. I can't believe I have not heard about him before.

I must have had a guardian angel the moment the accident occurred. So right now I'm just really grateful. The stolen 80.000 Colonnes, I mean that is only about a hundred dollars, and also the lens that is gone now, this all feels like nothing in comparison. The long discussion last night on the plane (wow, I mean talk about synchronicity! How is this even possible!!!) while the others tried to sleep was just amazing and absolutely invaluable!! So it is almost like yesterday alone compensated for all the problems, pain, losses and dangers from the trip.

Pretty much. I'm on the fence with this one. It's a money saving solution. He should get paid for his effort. I hope he put in the effort the get governments to implement it or similar invention that's larger scale. IF he does that much work, THEN he should get paid & (in an ideal world) throw half of his $ into the project.
I would want to make something the the hard innovative work. It looks like a great invention to help people. But, I can't see any government buying this product. Why pay for it if they can just kick your door in and take. Or tell everyone to not back up his idea. Till he's broke and sells the government the Patten for nickles and dimes. Then will only supply there soldiers with this product.

OR!!! You could just make, ship, and educate people on how to make charcoal/sand material water filters. Which can be made from almost any container, and can be connected in series to make water clean enough, that if it isn't drinkable at that point, is still clean enough to decrease the chances of illness, and a quick boil can take of the rest. Still more feasible then this bottle in terms of reaching the masses.

Most would use this method paired by solar heating for boiling & UV Light for bacteria & viruses..
Absolutely true, and there are MANY resources online and in print that do just that! So, how is anyone "hurt" by this? If you don't want what he's selling... don't buy it!

For someone that wanted to solve a world problem by getting clean water to everyone, why then are you asking $140+ per bottle! and $310 per can? That is outrageous! I pay less for city water! call me when you get the price of the bottle down to $20.00 and filters down to about $20 and i will buy a few hundred and have them shipped overseas to individuals that do not have city water.

I wouldn't go by the price of comparatively small number sports bottles sold in developed countries. You would have to understand and explain his plan for solution for a different product at a much larger scale for the 100's of millions globally that need a similar product. Anyone know what Michael Pritchard's plans for this need and scale?
To Justin Your thinking is right on. I believe this person is truly trying to help the world and I’m thankful for the effort he has put into creating this product. Clean water will continue to become more scarce and people here aren’t doing the simple math. So much cheaper and better for our environment than shipping plastic bottles.
It doesn't filter molecules, so it won't taste pure. And chemical contamination is still a health issue.
Which is why we should ALL learn how to "make" our own distilled water! It's virtually "free" (after you make your gizmo to do it)!
@@drileydriley2814 Anyone can make a distiller at home, just have a container that directs water vapor from a hot place to a cool place. Like a retort or even a large cooking pot with a smaller pot hung inside. Then just put it over a stove or a fire or something. Not super-easy, but not exactly hard. The problem is it takes a lot of energy to boil water, so at most you'll be making a cup of distillled water an hour. Because of water's heat of vaporization distillation isn't very practical on a small scale where you can't recycle the energy. So the problem is exactly the opposite. Distillation is easy and doesn't require expensive "gizmos", but it takes a huge amount of energy to do in amounts large enough to drink.
@@vladimirkuklev6051 ikniw its 3 years but...yes well said its very inefficient .. ive seen survival guys using a clear polythene sheet in a domed tent shape over a water container in the sun. Water evaporates and collects on underside of polythene then runs down into the clean water container.
the best water filtration system is the Alexapure Pro Water Filtration System. Sadly it is for home or Cabin use. Reduces up to 99.9999% of 206 contaminants, targeting..... Heavy Metals, Fluoride, Chlorine, Viruses & bacteria, Pesticides & Pharmaceuticals. I have searched high and low to find a portable system that even comes close. I ended up with 2 portable systems that covered some of those bases.

I believe this product was designed firsthand to be used as a catastrophe aid. (A better alternative to regular water shipping to catasrophe zones.)

i doubt he has much manufacturing involved, so its possible that he needs to make it pricy to make a profit. also read what Abbas Miah said, the government can afford it, and would likely save money.

I am from BANGLADESH. Even though I don't live in a flood-prone area but many people in Bangladesh do. The video is probably a decade old now but I have never seen nor heard about this device ever in Bangladesh. As far as I know, In flood-prone areas of Bangladesh, people typically boil the water or use tube walls to get drinkable water. However, Water-borne diseases are not that common in Bangladesh, since medicine is readily available everywhere and cheap to purchase. This is because we manufacture 99% of our own medicine.

$160 for the filter bottle ÷1,600 gallon lifespan = 10¢ a gallon. Bottled water at my local grocery store is $1/gallon, or 25¢ a gallon at water filtration kiosks and you provide your own containers. This is a very reasonable price, especially when you factor in the fact that, in many cases, travel and transport are drastically reduced or eliminated.
Whether this is a financially accessible product for all who would need it ... is not the point ... this man actually tried to come up with a solution ... so ... I think he deserves some sort of recognition for his efforts. Besides, who is to say that the production of this product would cost governments the same amount of money? I think this could be a wonderful opportunity for mass production of various separate parts that make up this bottle ... so all one has to do is fit it together ... and the other is that once it has reached its lifespan ... spare parts would be readily available to replace the used parts ...

The other thing that strikes me is the fact there are so many good people willing to go that extra mile to innovate and offer up solutions that make so much sense. It's been 10 years since the events occurred that inspired this man, can anyone tell me how much support he received to implement this solution ?

What they need it to stop having so many kids beyond their capacity to feed themselves. Within the next 50 years they are projected to outnumber asia.

That too, but is far more difficult than water management. Is a demographics problem it can't be fixed.
There are a lot of components to survival.
One resource I discovered that successfully combines these is the Marla survive system
(google it if you're interested) without a doubt the most useful survival resource that I've seen.

For those saying "Oh it's too expensive, why can't he make it cheaper", well i'm also a physicist and material scientist myself, i'd understand the cost of research and development this tech could take. You cant easily scale to Wide range and not expect compensation for the cost of production unless other means are brought in. Not everything good comes for free and someone has to pay for it

Little disappointed at TED for letting this infomercial style sales pitch grace their stage.
This product can literally save lives. I'm completely fine with this. For instance, I live in florida.. We just went through a category 4 hurricane. We did not have electricity or water. In grocery stores, the water went off the shelves in short matter of time. This product, would be a godsend if we were unable to get clean water. Thankfully I now know about this product and will be buying some just in case.

Deceivingly Charming I think the user was talking about how the speaker was discussing its use in developing countries. For individuals who live in developing countries, such as myself, the cost to buy one bottle is more than I can afford. It's ironic that this bottle is developed to target people from developing countries when only the rich can afford them. I think rather than the speaker talk about developing nations and the problems with water that we go through, he skip the whole portion and only discuss disaster relief in first world countries where people like yourself can actually afford his products.

Here is another idea: Teach people how to do basic water filtering with a cloth and inform them how long they got to boil the water over a fire to make it safe to drink and we'll save 8 billion $ to make this guy rich. Information weights nothing.

this is a blistering talk. as an engineer one of my goals is to take smart and cheap technology to the developing world, to reduce the disparity. absolutely inspirational. technology that is really benefiting others!
Steam distillation is 100% and easy. boil the water in a Kettle or pot and catch the condensation in another container or through a flex tube and let it drip into a bottle. you don't need to spend allot of money. seems like all these gadgets cost around $400. there's a number of good examples on TH-cam on how to distill water. Or by gallon of it at Walmart for $0.88.

What a wonderful talk! I thoroughly agree and am most impressed with your invention and physics. I recently found another Water talk on TH-cam which I thought you would love as well. I'm not an inventor or physicist and so I am forwarding a few my notes for your perusal.
- Fresh water is becoming scarce all around the world. Let's use nano-technology through chemistry to build a de-salination plant with no heat involved and which never stops running. Water from the sea or ocean goes in one end (first stage) and out the other (second stage). The first stage has magnetic nano-robots programmed to find and grab the salt, making the salt magnetic! The second stage has electro-magnets which pull the salt from the nano-robots and dump the salt in one container and the clear water into a separate reservoir. The by-products are salt, which is in high demand from 3rd world countries, and clear water, which is in demand from everyone! I would love to see this accomplished! P.S. There was talk of steam being used from drilling anywhere on the Earth just a few kms to extract it without danger, but I'm not real clear on how that was described. This talk can be found on TH-cam as Kryon They Are Coming and is discussed in the second half. Keep an open mind - it's a bit different than most talks!)

I really hate such do-gooders, presumptuous, haughty and superior only making money off the misery of poor people. Instead of giving them 'this Bottle', why not teach them how to filter their water using their own material. It is a very simple process. You set up a filtration systems for drinking water. It is a 3 tier systems using local earthenware like a big pot. The first pot at the top should have 3 layers: 1st: husks, gravel and sand. The 2nd one should have pulverized charcoal and the 3rd shall have clean drinkable water. Chinese, Indians and Persians have been using this method for generations. This 3 layers systems can be extended to 5 or even 7 layers. In China, India and many African Countries have clean drinking water sold in clear plastic sachets. It has reduced water borne disease in these countries.
Please do not advertise your ware on a public channel like youtube. Find other media.

We have a version of this in the 1st world. We like our high tech diagnosis machines, pills, high tech treatments, surgeries and so on. When the cause and cure for most of our chronic illnesses is diet :(
It's positioned for governments to buy. Specifically British colonized countries in Africa. Those people wouldn't be the ones buying it. Of course citizens in developed countries can buy it with their own money if they want.
Jessi... that's the only entertainment they have. Besides, most of them will die of aids anyway.

It looks nice, but I have a few problems this doesn't solve:
1) What if your flood or tsunami washes everything away. That will include your bottles.
2) I think the bottle and the new filters will be to expensive for most people without access. The numbers he mentions of around 20 billion sort of prove that point.

I have had one of these for a while now but never saw this video until today. TED are just giving Michael Pritchard a Sales platform. Michael, all these years later and after getting a Queen's award (MBE), make it cheaper for the average person and people will believe you 'did something about it'.

Previous commenters you guys do realize that this man's presentation was basically aimed at planting the seeds of thought FOR full scale funding from either Uber - rich corporate investors OR the government...or one and the same as in the case of "1st world" nations?
Or if you prefer to be cynical you could call it a sales pitch.
Nonetheless you heard his little blurb about the cost effectiveness of investing in distributing these bottles and Jerry cans in the communities, versus the price of setting up a MASSIVE, water treatment/recycle infrastructure?? That's why he reiterates "our (their) current way of thinking."
...and who would control and profit from corporate owned, federally managed infrastructure water sanitation plants? So it's like this....
Give a man a fish he eats for a day.
Teach a man to fish he eats for life.
Remove the fish from the ocean first, poison the water, and offer your fish to the man at a price....
The rest is history.
Regardless of the problem of what would appear to be an overzealous retail price, the guy deserves praise. Besides the price is only unreasonable in terms of cost for 3rd world residents....which is exactly why he's pitching the idea!

At least you seem to be TRYING to be fair. If you think his product "appear(s) to be an overzealous retail price" then purchase a different product or make something just as good yourself! But DO NOT BERATE someone for trying to HELP others. Now, if your contention is that government(s) will be in line to buy these (DOUBTFUL!), then it's the taxpayers that are ultimately "on the hook" for them. OBVIOUSLY, a "bulk price" would definitely be warranted and should be negotiated if at all possible. Even better, perhaps governments should JUST govern, and leave individuals to take care of themselves. Government is NOT a charitable organization! (Or, at least, it was never designed to be, and it should NOT be used in such a manner! But trying to get people who've existed in Western Civilization over the last 100 years to ultimately realize this has been - at the very least - "uphill"!) When "the market" and tax-payer supported "government" are mixed, you get an AWFUL mix of communism and capitalism; to be sure REAL capitalism hasn't been seen in the USA for over 100 years!!! What we have now is - at best - CRONY capitalism! We have corporations that make demands on politicians who are supposed to represent the PEOPLE, and - in turn - those very same PEOPLE have to go work for the corporations that make demands of the politicians - lining their pockets with campaign contributions, etc. The whole system needs an ENEMA! But do NOT put down a guy trying to help and get ahead for coming up with a solution that can actually legitimately HELP! Unless you have a better idea (proverbial "mousetrap") then be quiet and let others try to help!

A biosand filter is virtually free and lasts for years. Using the sun to disinfect the filtered water afterward is also virtually free and lasts for years. Even without glass/safe plastic to disinfect by the sun, you can just boil it to the same effect.
