  • That day, I made time to visit the Southeastern Railroad Museum in Duluth, GA. I'll have a full video covering that when time allows, but in the meantime, here's one highlight of the visit: Riding the excursion train.
The locomotive powering this train is SMRX #3, a GE 50-ton switcher originally built for Anglo-Canadian Paper Company. The train runs several round trips per day, taking visitors from just near the main entrance of the museum, to the backshops, and then back. Nothing real fancy, but it was a neat experience.
(0:00): Boarding the train. The two cars being pulled by this vintage GE are SOU Transfer Caboose XC7871 and N&W Caboose #500837. Every single rider, myself included, rode in the N&W Caboose for two simple reasons. 1. It was chilly outside. And 2. You get a better (and for my case as I rode on the rear platform for this very reason, panoramic) view of the inside of the shops.
Also featured in this video is SOU SW7 #8202 (ex-2287/1100) displayed near the shops, and inside the shops are A&WP P-74 4-6-2 #290 and Georgia Power USATC 0-6-0T #97, both of which are in the extensive processes of being cosmetically restored. I wish we could have got out and got closer, but the backshops are off limits to visitors. Aw well, at least we still got a view of both engines inside the facility. I do with this museum could run a steam locomotive, but I also understand that the very short distance the excursions operate would not justify the costly and labor-intensive projects of restoring a steam engine.
