    Pedagogy-“the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept.”There are hundreds maybe thousands of piano study teachers on TH-cam who have their own particular piece of the musical pie but can’t teach worth a damn. As someone who taught at a Community college I can spot the good from the bad. Tony tops the good list. His casual manner conveys information to me that sticks.Thanks Tony for all you do.

      Indeed his teaching skills, techniques are no no non sense. Practical , honest and clear . Reminded me of my piano teacher back in Manila , Philippines when in my teens

    I thought I was a theory nurd!!! Haha 😛 but this scale list is over the top. I think you are a great teacher. Along with kent Hewitt you guys are the best out there.
    Melody is king. Use the rest of the chromatic scale to embellish. All notes are fair game chosen wisely as you hear it. Thanks Tony!

    Thanks for your insightful comments on the topic; made for a fun and amusing refresher.
    Will need to practice the 1/2 - whole diminished, ascending melodic, and lydian dominant scales a bit more.
    Great advice on investing into the diminished series of scales for improvising. Time to "explore and be the melody" , what a great ending!
    Thanks for the Syllabus!

    Wow! Your theoretical knowledge is quite impeccable and thorough. I subscribed to your channel because of the wealth of useful knowledge you are sharing so thank you! However, some of the scale combinations that you deemed unusable are quite usable and interesting in some playing styles and genres. Your musical genius even in this lesson perhaps has exceeded your exposure to things outside of your norm. Anyway, I appreciate what you share so thanks again!

    Tony. I've played blues for years. This is for those struggling for a new sound. I found that C blues has more flavor if A blues scale is played over it. This takes a bit of getting use to.. Btw..this can be done at an extreme speed..You can start descending or ascending or just play as the inspiration comes.
    Say we are playing the C7 1 chord.
    Descend with C6 arpeggio.. C A G E..this is where all those classical arpeggios come into play... those notes put the thumb on E (the third of C)..Now you probably will practice this HS.(Hands Separate) I'll just concentrate on the right hand..Now keep the descending speed. The 4th finger will hit Eb.. I don't use the 3rd finger..Now you can think of this as a #9 of C7..but your left hand will probably be playing the 4 chord of the blues progression F7..When learning just keep hitting the the first inversion
    (ACEb F). For those learning..the Eb note is now the b7(flat 7) of the F scale. Now what's really cool is that the next note (D} is a 6. Now I am guessing, but I am usually playng these notes 200+ bpm..which means
    that the 6 is a fast 13, that the brain picks up. ..Ill stop there. Also I have noted that with just the C blues scale (C Eb F Gb G Bb C) l, that over the 1 dominant chord C7..it sounds like it is already resolved.. Btw If I am playing blues in the of F...I often play D blues. D is a minor third of the F scale..(1 and half steps down). Much faster than counting up in the major scale of F
    F G A Bb C (D) E F.. prefer to just think F E (D).

    Hi Tony, About the Lydian Augmented, playing in C the phrase inThe Beatles song Yesterday sounds "all(E) my(F#) trou(G#)-ble(A) seemed(B) so(C) far(B) a(A)-way(A)"...I don't think Paul had the Lydian concept in mind but the melody came first and that's why it last forever in the greatest music ever written. To the pleasure !

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      E7 - Am.........I think that is really the A melodic minor ascending. ( The D Lydian dominant scale is derived from that scale.

    • @charlesbilodeau8816
      @charlesbilodeau8816 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TonyWinston Yes, you're right, both the A melodic minor and the D Lydian dominant have the same notes as well the Lydian augmented that for a moment I thought give it a second chance but is more judicious to say that the song is built in this case with the A melodic ascending that should be in a real version in D. Always a pleasure following your clear map scales. Thanks

    Wow - when all the scales are listed like this, with fancy names, it makes it look impossibly complicated! The fact is that if you know your 12 major scales plus melodic and harmonic minors, then apply them to standards, then all of this just emerges as modes. I was playing "Lydian Dominant" and "Phrygian Dominant" accidentally for a long time before I discovered they had names! Also anyone who has played a Bb major scale over the whole of Autumn Leaves has accidentally played Dorian, Mixolydian, Lydian, Locrian, etc. I like to let these scales drop out of the harmony organically.

      Wrote this out. Below..3 jazz minors
      Same ascending and descending.
      Ill do it in C first. next F.
      I'm texting. Might make typo.error.
      First F major scale (F G A Bb C D E F)
      Btw all 3 minors have same 1st 5.
      The 7 note is the note that changes.
      Since all minor chords have a b3 or lowered scale degree 3..lets start.
      M melodic N natural H harmonic.
      M. (F G Ab Bb C) (D E F)
      N. (F G Ab Bb C) (Db Eb F)
      H. (F G Ab Bb C) (Db E F)
      Notice that all the first five notesare from Ab scale. Ab Bb C Db Eb F G Ab..
      It is only scale degrees 6 and 7 that change...best to write this out for C naturalminor..it uses the notes from Eb. up a min. 3rd interval from C. Also as above..go to the C minor triad and the major 3rd will be a minor third. that is a way to find the parent key.
