It's like a different zack Snyder exist in each phase of production. Pre production he's obsessed with the mythology, filming he's obsessed with characters and actors, and in post he's obsessed with the scope and grandness. It's almost like in editing he's like "it's not badass enough, turn it up"

I would argue James Wan is a himbo auteur. All his movies feel distinctly James Wan, even when he's working with massive budgets. He comes across as very excitable and down to earth in interviews and some of his short films (particularly Doggie Heaven) feel like he decided to put time and money into a project just because he chuckled at the concept. He's also a bit of a wife guy but not in the sexist/compensating way. I think Leigh Whannell (James Wan's close friend and frequent collaborator) was also in himbo territory when he was doing movie reviews on TV and screenwriting/acting but I think as he moves into his own arteurship he's shed his himboness.

Your comment on Sydney Lumet reminded me of something John Clease said in a talk I went to with him 20 years ago at Cornell. He said directors were not important to the creative process of a film. If you want to be a writer with more creative impact, you should strive to be a writer producer.
My immediate thought was that directors are not all that creative in HIS movies. His films are typically driven creatively by the writing. But that's just because of the kinds of films he does.

    • @blokey8
      @blokey8 ปีที่แล้ว

I wonder if the dial on it has shifted too. Now you see a sort of assumption that directors must also be writers/outright auteurs. Witness the people who talk about what brilliant writers the Russos are, when their MCU stuff is largely handled by Marcus and McFeely

@@Sam_on_TH-cam That's a fair point. I was thinking mostly (but hadn't articulated) that for a lot of my generation, the first time we really took notice of a director's name on a new film was when we saw "written and directed by Christopher Nolan" at the end of Batman Begins. Well, "directed by Christopher Nolan" and "written by Christopher and Jonathan Nolan", but in my head, that's the root of it for a lot of people.

    • @Sam_on_YouTube

@@blokey8 When were you born? Because credits like that were big in some films before I was born as well, if the director was Speilberg, Lucas, Coppola, or Scorsese. In the 90s, when I got into film, written and directed by credits were a pretty mainstream big deal from directors like Smith, Tarrantino, or "a Spike Lee Joint." And smaller, indie films, have always been known by their director, like Jarmusch, Fuller, Jeanette or countless others not as famous.

Love your work! I’d be curious to see a retrospective of Rian Johnson’s filmography especially how he draws inspiration from classic works. Film noir and brick, the odyssey/Ulysses and the brothers bloom, Oedipus and Looper, Christiesque mysteries and knives out etc. (I guess one could make the argument the last Jedi is an adaptation of a Star Wars story rather than actually being one)

I feel like Paul W.S. Anderson possibly fits the bill as "himbo auteur"? I think a staple component of 'himboism' is being too meatheaded to do anything insensitive or mean. Zack seems to be trying his best, and his 'iffyness' seems to come off unintentional. Michael Bay is deliberately representing women and minorities in belittling light, which excludes him from any act of himbotude.

I guess I'm going to be the contrarian but Cox is my favorite Hannibal Lecter. Though to be fair to Mikkelsen, I haven't seen the series. And that isn't really a dig at Hopkins, I love him and he's great.
But really, it's just the two takes on the character where Hopkins is so over the top, and at times kind of cartoonishly chewing scenery. I mean, he's still great at what he's doing and makes those movies, I just find Cox a little more interesting because he seems more normal, but with this darkness lurking in him. And Cox of course nails it. Sorry, I'm a Cox man.

Ditto. There's something about his characterization that's more menacing - he's smart, but so direct and cutting. He gives us so much in just a couple of scenes - and I'm happy to be the contrarian hipster, as fun as the others are.

My thing with the Batman no kill rule is not even just the morality. It's a legal thing. When boiled down to it Batman is essentially a PI right? And it's not like Private Investogators are legally allowed to murder people. Batman isn't allowed to beat people up to but assault charges on from criminals to Batman would probably be easier to remove for Gordon than if there were a bunch of court dates about why Batman decided to kill each and every criminal.

Is film the end goal for all media (books, video games, ect.) , How many Indiana Jones movies that have been recast or adaptations in other media need to be made until it's ok to recast because it's been done enough like wolverine. Should the fist adaptation of wolverine not have been made because he was already done "perfectly" the first time in the books? Where is the line?

Some remakes really don't need to be remakes. If Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan had starred in a movie called "The Kung Fu Kid" and the film was otherwise 100% the same as we go, it would have been better received.
You want to remake Indiana Jones? Make a spiritual successor instead of a remake. You could make a different swashbuckling archaeologist retro character.
Besides, Indiana Jones is a terrible choice for a direct remake because the whole thing was a homage to pulp films, and nobody remembers or cares about those anymore.

I was also curious about Pat's response to the question about Star Wars narrative beats which don't neccessary make sense &/or literal story device etc. etc. Partially because I also didn't really understand where that question was coming from but I simultaneously do get a sense of what they were driving at. I wonder if that's just an issue of general thematic tropes and narrative story devices which at times can feel cliche? Like just things that movies do. I'm honestly being sincere and not at all trying to be sarcastic or insulting. I find there's certain times one watches any film and the story can flow very smoothly and you're really "in it" then other times that same movie can give a rather different experience where you might get obsessed with or distracted by a particular element which can alter one's perspective on the moment or the entire experience. That's why it can be so frustrating how parts of todays culture will automatically dismiss a certain film based on one single viewing not necessarily taking into account that what you get from any experience is determined as much by what you bring to it as what the thing is. Objective vs subjective I suppose. So much of the films which are considered classic masterpieces today were actually box office bombs & very under appreciated in their time. I suppose I personally can be more immediately critical against alot of the franchise & blockbuster stuff because so much clearly only exists because of marketing momentum and rarely bringing anything new (NOT always but much of the time), when it comes to the more unique and obscure I usually crave that but if I don't I really try my best to reserve judgment until at least a second viewing or some good length of time goes by.

I haven't seen all his stuff but my Lumet take is that he should be seen in conversation with Agnes Varda, the journeyman alongside the artist, both deeply concerned with humane and kind understandings of the everyday.
12 Angry Man and Dog Day are obvious points but even in Before The Devil Knows You're Dead I feel his unconditional love he has for these people despite them being shitty - beyond the simplistic "making unlikeable characters compelling", I feel sincere pity and disappointment because he believes in them.
This, of course, makes Network even more startling: a brilliant but bleak, cynical, and invective movie that stands out as a bitter jewel in the crown of one of the most humanist filmographies.

Regarding adaptations - isn't it, like, Kubrick's "thing" to make pretty faithful adaptations of not necessarily great literature, which really transcend the source material?
But I do think it works mostly with straightforward and at most middlebrow literature. Like, you can easily make a great LotR movie adaptation, because if it's made well enough (as Jackson's is) it can actually be a pretty good substitute for reading it, while adapting, let's say, Gravity's Rainbow in a straightforward manner is a fool's errand. You really have to have some twist, a different approach to even try to make stuff like this work, like with The French Lieutenant's Woman or Jonze-Kaufman Adaptation.

This is big hot take but I think Sean Patrick Flannery is a SLIGHTLY better Indiana Jones than Harrison Ford, his character is just more complex, likeable and interesting and I would love to see an Indy movie where he takes on the role in say the 1940s, maybe even with old Harrison Ford going on his own adventure in the 70s where he completes Sean's incomplete adventure. I know I'm alone in this but I can dream haha.
