-another silent woodspirit carving for you today using a nice split piece of cottonwood bark .Tools used were mostly Pfeil gouges and chisels with a couple different knives. Finished with a mix of watered down craft store acrylics, matte spray finish and Artminds antiquing wax -hope you like it!

That's sooooo cool! I found a nice piece of cottonwood bark walking at the lake, went to carve on it and realized sand was in all the cracks.

Inspirational as usual Doug. I really liked the affect of charring the wood It left such a beautiful, rich brown patina on the piece. I’d have been tempted just to give it a nice oil finish at that point. But after you painted and antiqued it, I thought “ Damn - that’s pretty cool too!!” Lots of options 👍👍

I watched one of your videos for the first time today. It was a tutorial from a couple years ago showing how to whittle old man faces in small peices of wood. I found myself outside hunting sticks and accomplished two little men faces! It's my first time whittling and it was a lot of fun! I used color pencils to add color to the beard and hat, and with a little layering made it look pretty decent for a first time project. Wish I could show you how it turned out.

You are a true artist in wood carving! You have inspired me to take up the hobby and I over-ambitiously traded to carve busts of my grandchildren as my first projects. I did six attempts at my first granddaughter before I had one that slightly resembles her. Like everything in life it takes practice. Have you ever tried to carve a bust of anyone that actually looked like them?
