Hi Marty, My name is Hunter and I am 15. I live in a small town with my family and a guitar. Every thing I know is because of you being such a great teacher and inspiring me to push my self to become better as a player. I hope some day I will be able to meet you in person so we can rock out!!! Great video, keep them coming!
This is probably the closest best 90s guitar riffs to my personal opinion that I have yet to see! I’m 16 and absolutely love everything 90s alternative especially the chili peppers! Love this list! Thanks Marty!
Marty, I really appreciate the personal touch you give to these top 10 lists. Knowing how an artist I really respect felt when first hearing these songs is so insightful and great. "You are who you were when", as a sociologist once said, and that applies especially to the music we love. I grew up in the 60's/70's era, and I can remember sitting in my dad's car in Berkley, MI, while he went into a store for a minute. He left the AM radio on (even before the days of FM). The Doors came on playing "Light My Fire". As far as I know, that is the very first rock song I had ever heard. My mom and dad were more into country western (Hey, good lookin', whatcha got cookin') and folk (Green, green, it's green they say on the far side of the hill). I would listen to the radio for hours just waiting to hear that song again. (I was too young, and we were too poor, to have money to buy a 45 RPM record, back then.)
My mom first taught me La Bamba and Song Sung Blue in 1989 when I was 14, then Kurt inspired me in 1991 to expand into grunge and beyond. Yes I was 16 when Nevermind came out, that was an amazing time in music and I feel lucky to have experienced it in real time 😊
Man this was one of the best and interesting videos you've made so far! You really take one on a time travel and giving us a sense on how it was .. not even in terms of music as it only had such a great impact on social culture. Thanks for that especially as I'm curruntly very into the 90s Grunge scene etc. Would have loved to be at this RHCP concert you were talking about as they and PJ belong to my absolut favourits! Thanks and regards from Germany
it’s so awesome to hear someone who’s taught and been an inspiration for so many people talk about these moments of immense inspiration for himself and take us on a trip back to how things were when he was younger, for me I’m now a freshman in college realizing I’m gonna be looking back on my experiences right now and it’s up to me to make sure that when I look back I’m happy and proud of what I did in these moments

I have been following your vids for a few months now have learnt some new riffs and theory that have really helped me advance - you're a fantastic player and really know your stuff. But mostly what I love is that your affection for the music - you have eclectic taste and don't get elitist about any particular genre, your teaching and presenting is very down to earth and unpatronising and there's nothing phoney about your content. This could have easily been a stock 'top ten' list just to get hits but it's clear these tracks mean a lot to you and it's great to hear some anecdotes about your influences, they make the videos that much more enjoyable.
Wow! Fantastic video and breakdown of the songs, and well as the personal insight into what these songs meant to you! Thank you for sharing this with us. I REALLY enjoyed it!
I agree, I think that was one of the best concerts I had ever been to. It was Love Trilogy the opened with when Flea descended from the rafters upside down. The funny thing I remember on the night I went Eddie Vedder was trying to get everyone to get out of their seats and no one was really paying attention to him. I don't think they even turned off the house lights. I went to Lollapalooza that next summer and everyone was crazy for Pearl Jam. What a difference a few months made. Love the channel, keep up the awesome work!
Great video, bringing back some great memories. 1992 was my first year in University, and had been learning the guitar for just over 3 years. I remember learning "Alive" fondly along with a load of other Seattle classics. Riffs I personally would have included are Love Rears Up Its Ugly Head by Living Colour, and two Soundgarden ones : Limo Wreck and Fresh Tendrils (although I'd include most, if not all, of the album Superunknown!
I think Marty and I graduated around the same time. I remember when BSSM came out. I remember being blown away by that entire album. Such a powerful album for me.
The 90s delivered hands down some of the greatest music. You can go for days pulling out riffs and then realize you haven’t been touched the Britrock scene that was exploding at the same time...
The thing that stuck out to me most about this video was the similarity of our stories. I'm about the same age as you and my experience in the 90s is similar to yours. At the time, I was into Phish, Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler et al and had no appreciation for most of the songs featured here, but as I have aged and nostalgia has set in, I have an appreciation for that music that I couldn't feel back then.
Andy you’re the man. Simple easy to understand tutorials. Picked up a guitar for the first time couple months ago, been self teaching on TH-cam. 2 weeks after starting your video for the intro guitar and I’m playing it at tempo with minimal, barely noticeable f ups. Thanks buddy for providing the resources i needed to be able to play one of my favorite songs. Thats 2 weeks and practicing 3-4 days a week for 1 or 2 hours on those days i picked up the guitar.

Love this Marty! The wee stories along with each song are so spot on. I’m 40 now, so the 90s really resonate with me more than any other era. It was an amazing time for music and although there’s more access to music than ever now, I really miss those days of saving up for CDs and discovering new bands and albums “the long way” 😂. 🤘🏻🏴

Pearl Jam story reminded me of walking into a bar in Honolulu in 1979. Band was tearing up the place and I was wondering who the idiot wearing the English school boy suit was. First time I ever saw or heard of AC/DC. Like your vid.

Hi Marty. I learned how to play many of my favorite songs from your videos when I was a teen. I stopped playing guitar about 6 years ago. I'm glad to be back with your lessons again!

I love your Channel Marty, I learned my first song off of your lessons. I have a song request for your next song, it is Holy Wars, by Megadeth. Thanks Marty.
Hey Marty, I've been playing guitar for two years now and i have made incredible progress. I learn by ear now but I started by watching your videos, and in fact, I learned my first song, Purple Haze, by watching your video at school and writing the tabs and coming home and playing it. Thanks a ton Marty
"And I forget just what it takes, and yet I guess it makes me smile. I've found it hard, it's hard to find, oh well whatever, Nevermind" - The 90's ;-)
Iv been learning for about a year now mostly from your videos and its quite cool that you started learning the year I was born, I think you are very good at breaking the songs down in a way beginner's can learn as i have never learned in a proper way i have only used your videos Thanks
Frickin' awesome trip down memory (while I still have some) lane. Great narration and playing Marty! I need to check out your 80's and 70's riff videos. Keep up the good work.
Had to stop the video and look up your lesson on “are you gonna go My way” I reckon We are of a similar age as this tune was massive just after I left school even for non rockers.
Fr I was hurt by this. I am obsessed with anything related to Alice in Chains. Cried my ass off when layne died. Mad Season should be featured in this channel. One album, but it has to be in my all time top 10.

Thanks for your top 10 riffs of the 90s. Great music!
The Seattle Sound is legendary
Hey Marty, I've been playing guitar for two years now and i have made incredible progress. I learn by ear now but I started by watching your videos, and in fact, I learned my first song, Purple Haze, by watching your video at school and writing the tabs and coming home and playing it. Thanks a ton Marty
Gotta have some nirvana on there!!
Marty coming in clutch, making our quarantines much much better
"And I forget just what it takes, and yet I guess it makes me smile. I've found it hard, it's hard to find, oh well whatever, Nevermind" - The 90's ;-)
90s rocked! I started playing guitar in 1995!
When the first thing you hear is Green Day y’know it’s going to be a great video
Shadez green day is a pice of shit, mate
@@user-rj5uj8cc4f Why?
Jack O'Meara because that pop “punk” sounds like what 12 year old boys be listening in school.
J relax mate
@@user-rj5uj8cc4f isn't music about the personal opinion?
Iv been learning for about a year now mostly from your videos and its quite cool that you started learning the year I was born, I think you are very good at breaking the songs down in a way beginner's can learn as i have never learned in a proper way i have only used your videos
Thanks
Also I probably would've thrown in Alice in Chains, you can't talk 90s without throwing them in the mix
Sheer masterclass
Frickin' awesome trip down memory (while I still have some) lane. Great narration and playing Marty! I need to check out your 80's and 70's riff videos. Keep up the good work.
I’m probably the only one who didn’t think Scot Weiland was copying Eddie Vedder.
Started playing guitar in ‘91, because of this music (plus a few more) , serious nostalgia for me here
Had to stop the video and look up your lesson on “are you gonna go My way” I reckon We are of a similar age as this tune was massive just after I left school even for non rockers.
I too started playing in ‘93. Cheers, Marty! Great list!
Please do some terrorvision i can't find them anywhere. Keep up the good work !
Top 3 favorite riffs from the 90s intro
0:00 When I come around
0:10 Smells like teen spirit
0:26 killing in the name of
Really disappointed Alice In Chains wasn’t on the list. They was a huge part of the 90’s with countless amazing riffs.
Its just his favorite, nothing objective.
Fr Cantrell's nickname is "The Riff Lord" but it's his preference. He doesn't look like a Chains fan not many people are. Fuck em AiC is legendary
He probably can't play the riffs
Fr I was hurt by this. I am obsessed with anything related to Alice in Chains. Cried my ass off when layne died. Mad Season should be featured in this channel. One album, but it has to be in my all time top 10.
@@kilgoretrout321 nah this man can play anything
Love that you chose Plush !!! WHAT A SONG !!
I would argue that Scar Tissue is RHCP’s most significant riff from the 90s. It was the band’s second coming.
Indeed. The re-birth of the band, the (first) return of John Frusciante.
Love these favorite riffs videos Marty!
Scott weiland is being himself.. Hes unique in his own way
Marty, didn’t realize you were that old!! 90s feel like yesterday and it’s been 20 years.
20:22- 20:54 when you realize you are just a beginner
This is so awesome and brought back so many memories!
