Before the Vikings - Evolution of Viking Art, Weapons and Armour

  • There was a flourishing civilisation in Northern Europe long before the Viking era. This video shows some archaeological artifacts from England and Sweden dating from the Nordic Bronze Age, the Migration era and the Vendel era.
    I also have some footage of the living history group Wulfheodenas whose replicas of the Vendel and Valsgärde helmets are without equal. They came to visit the pagan burial mounds at Gamla Uppsala which was a fitting place for a photo shoot. I also had ago at making one of the foils by hammering a pressblech with the help of the Smith David Roper.

      Definitely some of them are germanic as opposed to nordic or scandinavian, but those cultures were connected very closely, which is kind of the point ;).

    • @triumphant39
      @triumphant39 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      My comment was not in disagreement with that, but there is indeed a distinction, that is because words like "nordic', 'germanic' and 'celtic' are largely used to refer to cultures, rather than ethnicities. Many groups were indeed combinations between those three, depending on the particular geographical region of course. Some helmets are definitively anglo-saxon (a mixture of germanic and nordic in both culture and geographical origin), and some originate from germanic tribes (tribe being the important word) as opposed to nordic tribes, for example that of the alammani, marcomanni, langobards, and earlier groups like the cherusci, chatti, suebi, and chauci. You can do your own research of course, but that there is a distinction between them is not up for debate.

    • @triumphant39
      @triumphant39 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can also simply search "germanic vs nordic" or "nordic vs slavic", which will bring you to some...ahem, "alternative" political sites, or pages about that topic, if you would like to explore the ethnic differences. Also, I don't need to be schooled on those things, just saying. Tyr, tiw, tiwaz, odin, woden, wotan, etc etc etc. I could name plenty of cognates and different names for different languages and cultures. Not exactly relevant to the subject though.

      The helmets are replicas from actual archaeological finds in Uppland, Sweden and one of them from England. The English one from Sutton Ho where probably manufactured in Sweden.

    In modern Swedish viking research we now often say that the viking age starts around the fall of the Western Roman Empire, instead of the attack on Lindisfarne. To simplify things, this is about the time that the Viking runes are invented and when the Nordic people starts to use sails on their ships, among other reasons. Meaning that most of what is shown in this video can be called "Viking". Obviously the Nordic people had their "Viking style" warrior culture prior to this, most likely originating already during the stone age, but the fall of the Western Roman Empire is what lead to people in Scandinavia "going Viking", as their fall, among other things, lead to Europe becoming christian, which caused problems with trading, among other things, etc.

    • @BirkaViking
      @BirkaViking 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Nordic people used sails way before that you can see sails on petroglyphs up here already in the nordic bronze age. You can see some of them at my nordic bronze age videos.

    You can forgive people for confusing Pagan Anglo Saxon armor as Viking for obvious reasons. Always amusing to see how not inherently dissimilar they were from their Nordic seafaring cousins who came later on in the historical record. I always liken the Viking invasions of England to a poetic vengeance of their earlier Germanic religion. A sort of “you morons lost your way and we’re here to remind you of what you once were” story

    • @Survivethejive

    • @Kenzofeis
      @Kenzofeis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zedi gan
      That would depend on the metal type, thickness and the maker.
      But it is quite possible to cold-beat Iron plate up to around 1mm thickness into a bowl shape in a form made of hard wood, and then attach bands with rivets. Iron is relatively soft, steel is harder; added Carbon (Carbon steel) and perhaps other metals (alloyed).
      The Iron can be "Carbonated" after shaping, too.
      There is a certain way to beat the plate, by "talking" to it with the hammer, with that technique it shapes like it is soft and agreeable, with little effort.

    Have you ever looked into a possible connection between the Picts and the Sami people? I find many similarities, such as: Housing, not the tent type structures but rather the more permanent earthen structures with wooden doors that are similar to the Pictish huts; the carving work that includes similar intricate trims and even the basket weave carving (the best Sami examples are on knife handles); and the fact that the Sami women traditionally wear a plaid shawl and each family has its own plaid. It would be interesting to compare language. Are there any surviving Pictish words that are similar to Sami words? Are there similar names, such as the Pictish Durst and the Sami Dorste? Finally it would be interesting to see if there is an ancient DNA connection if this were possible to do.
