My wife and I did three courses with Chris, and they are amazing. I am trying to talk my wife Andrea into going into a carbine 1. It has been a while since I shot the course of fire in the Corps, so I need a brushing up. Not sure if you remember us Chris, Ron and Andrea from RCR. Gonna wait till summer I think, far too cold for oldies like us. See you soon Chris, Semper Fi...

Obviously Costa has way more knowledge on the issue than me, a lame normie, but here are my 2 cents. As a civilian, you really need to think about your use cases for a carbine. He talks about engaging targets at 300m with one mag in your back pocket, because that's where a carbine has the most advantage. I agree with that fact. Carbines are effective pretty far out. That being said, as a civilian living in the US, what "realistic" situation are you gonna get into where you HAVE to be taking out bad guys at 300m, and you were hurrying so much you only have 1 spare mag in you pocket?
The only cases I can think of where you gotta be engaging targets that far out on US soil is some far flung without-rule-of-law Nuntnfancy type post apocalyptical scenario, in which case I most definitely have my belt or plate carrier. But let's be real.. the chances of that happening? Slim.
More realistically, you'd have some sort of home defense scenario or some sort of active shooter scenario, where time is tight and you probably only had time to grab your weapon and a spare mag. Any other scenario, I won't even have a carbine, just a pistol. Anyhow... in these cases, you aren't taking shots at 300m. More like 50m? Also, as a civilian, you should be utilizing your weapon in a defensive posture. If I'm 300m away from a threat like that in an urban environment with cover and concealment everywhere, my priority would be to get myself and my loved ones as far away from danger as possible and to wait for the authorities to arrive. I wouldn't be trying to actively destroy the threat unless my safety was directly threatened.. and like Costa said, at distances like that, they most likely won't be very effective.
This was the reasoning I've been taught anyways in all the civilian carbine courses I've been to.

If you need three guns just to scrape through 1000 rounds, you should invest in better guns, not a dumbass class from an iffy instructor. Okay. This guy talking about engaging targets out at 500 yards with an AR as if thats what normally happens in a gun fight... and doesnt want to engage in CQC. Well guess what, reality is is when you have to defend yourself like on your property with your AR, its going to be CQC. Maybe 50 yards tops. So train that way. Noone is EVER engaging that far except in war in the middle east. I also believe that if you can, run your gear from day one so you get used to running it. Even as a beginner/novice. If for some reason, the next day your life is in danger and you NEED to run your gear to greater your chances of survival.. i bet you would be wishing you ran that gear during class the day before. It still wouldnt be a bad idea at all to train without that stuff and just a mag in the pocket. But you can train and get proficient at that any other time.

    • @obiesunstreak2409

I can dig what he's throwing out.
He is realistic. Despite what a lot of y'all "ninjas" are saying.
If you get in a gunfight, it's not gonna be a gunfight. It's going to be bullets are flying and you're trying to get out of there. If you have to start shooting at someone with your rifle and wearing your gucci war belt..... you probably put yourself in a bad situation. You had time to put your crap on, so you knew what kind of situation you were getting into.
The goal is to avoid those situations.
Best way to prepare for a gun fight, is to get your butt in shape so you can get away as fast as possible. And then maybe poke shots at distance if the area allows for it.
You're not clearing houses and buildings lieutenant dan. You've got no reason to be clearing buildings. Stop training with unnecessary gear.
If you're clearing your house, you're not gonna put on any other gear. You're gonna grab your tool and work as fast as possible. Because seconds mean death.

who the heck owns so many firearms that they casually bring 2-3 extra rifles and brings extra ammo on top of 2000 rounds minimum for a course? lol Then again, that's the people that go to these sort of events, so never mind. Other than when I was in the Army, I don't think I've ever met anyone with more than 500 rounds assorted in their possession, let alone owns more than about two handfuls of firearms, in total (and all of them are dear enough that they aren't just going to hand them out to strangers) lol. But Seriously, +1 on pickin' on the "Tactical Timmy's" that think relying on a crazy elaborate gear set up in all situations is a thing (fight light: rifle, bandolier, water). But also, you don't have to expend ammunition to do 80% of the skills practiced in this course.
