I went to Clifftop this past Summer. It was my first festival, and I went by myself. Mark and Hilarie from this band were the first friends I made there. Wouldn't you know they went on to win trad band! Great musicians, and some of the nicest people you could hope to meet.
Love that dark fiddle the girl is playing. I just bought one that looks almost identical. I've been obsessed with the dark fiddles lately, and now I've hot one.
that's Rachel Eddy of the Morgantown Rounders on fiddle, Hilarie Burhans on banjo and Mark Hellenberg on banjo uke (both of Hotpoint Stringband, a contradance band), Stuart Kenney (of Wild Asparagus etc.)on bass, and Bill Dudley on guitar. This was recorded just after they missed their call for the OT stringband contest at Clifftop 07 (drawing a "3" didn't help!)
Me too. I come back to this video often. Yes, great warmup tune and just plain fun to listen to. I have shared it with other friends. Hope some of my jam group guys pick up on it. I will kick it in on tonight's jam at the Donut Shop.
Boys, if you ain't right...............well I'm sorry. Now if my feet will just keep still I'll be able to calm down. They just ain't no better music and I don't care who you are.
aH this makes my carpel tunnel hurt! I remember going to sleep early in the morning to this music at many many Galaxs! Well before the stalls were torn down and pavement put in. Oh I miss those days where Bluegrass and Oldtime were mingled together for all to enjoy. Not sure if the Bluegrass just finally ran them out or if the Killing of the stalls did it. But as a true Bluegrasser who spent 33 years at Galax it was a sad day. I think that is why I lost interest 2 years ago when I quit going.
Hey, we were playing for us... and we had a lot of pent-up energy seeing as we had raced to the stage to play in the contest and gotten there about 20 seconds too late. You couldn't have slowed us down with Thorazine at that point. We were ready to play and by gum we were gonna play something somewhere.
The chop or chunk rhythm you hear is the banjo uke, which supplies a lot of rhythm. It's all a matter of taste I guess. Personally I don't think it takes away from Rachel's fiddlin' or the banjer playin'. It's awfully hard to keep your feet still when listenin' to this song. If you don't want to buck dance on this one, sway, or pat your feet you'd better check with the doctor. You might be "daid"!
@djfinex Packaging unfortunately. They want pretty faces, sexy bodies, etc. It's not about music to them, it's about money. Get a group of playboy bunnies that can play as well as these folks and watch them skyrocket to fame.
Sounds great! Question about the banjo uke. Is the function of the banjo uke to strum 16th note chords? Does he also play melody lines. Just curious because I play banjo uke too and am interested in playing this style. Thanks
Nice sound . . sorry to be critical though but I can hear someone using a "chop rhythm" thought that was a no no in old time music, as that method of playing should be only used in Bluegrass?
This is my favorite you tube video. I keep coming back to this frequently. Giant thumbs up!
I Love IT. We need more of this music on the radio and TV. Bring It Back
I've watched this video many times over the years. Love it.

This band finally got the recognition they deserved this year - First Place in the traditional band contest at Clifftop 2011!
Hilarie is one of my very favorite banjo players .. This is just wonderful !! SO much joy even with being 20 seconds late !!
Wish I was there ... Thanx for posting.
I've watched this many, many times. Great tune, great playing, great edits. Five more stars.

Rachel's fiddling is so full of energy. I hope I get to hear her live one day.
That's brilliant!....as I read the comment about you just having to dance to this tune, I realized my head was bopping and my feet were tapping along!

Very cool Bill. I tried the "&fmt=18". Sharp, and for youtube closely synced with music.
That Rachels chicks smile there towards the end says it all!
Pure passion
Now that's music, and I don't care who you are.
Great Jam folks

Why the hell do the record execs continue to push "new country" when this stuff's got more life, better rhythm, and tons of soul. Fantastic.

I must meet this lady fiddler...
Awesome playing. Is the little banjo/uke the instrument that is chopping?

Good music - nothing bad about it! You would have to be deaf or dead if your foot doesn't start tapping to it! :)
How they get these? I do make fun in time!
is that Rachel Eddy??
It's the "old" Rachel Eddy (i.e. a little hung over in this video from 2007)
check out the duet at swammy05
