Honestly I have a lot to say about the Whoopi conversation, but if anything sums it up is this.... when your show is the very same entity that panders to and gives so much power to cancel culture and censorship culture, they will inevitably do the same to you. I think it stems from the delusion some blacks have that they are the only people in history that has been oppressed. If Jews are “white” then that theory is thrown right out the window since antisemitism is the oldest form of racism and has persisted to this day. Jews In general are all colors however white jews have faced the brunt of oppression throughout recent history. Darker skinned Jews would have been the slaves in Egypt that helped build pyramids as well as other major structures. However they still were not “black” they were most likely the same skin tone as most middle easterners.

@Angela Bronckhurst there is a big difference between being jewish and being black. Jews are not a race they are an ethnoreligion, ashkenazi Jews are literally white. Jews like other with ethnicities have defining features but for the most part you cannot tell an ethno Jewish person from a standard white person. Black people are a race, there is no way for a black person to not look black.

I'm real Old School, when it comes to the question of Race. I'm a Baby Boomer. There were only Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid. Yes - everyone is Ok with "cancel culture" when it's something they agree with and then are surprised when it's turned on them or someone they like. The suspension was the wrong call. They easily could have turned it into a teachable moment: invite scholars and academics to spend half a show educating the audience (and Whoopie) and finish with her apology at the end on screen and a message about the importance of understanding the Holocaust. Instead, they punished someone for sharing an ignorant opinion where no malicious intent was involved. This suppresses conversations. The reaction will instead be "Well, I better not say anything about x topic because I can get suspended or lose my job if I am wrong" when the reaction should be "I should educate myself on these topics and recall there could be other points of view and I could be incorrect and expect that if I am wrong I will have to accept that and be called to account and discuss it". I would feel this way even if it was something said about the Black experience. I think the entire thing was badly handled.

At the time of these events between around 1938-1945 - they invented the idea that Jews were a separate subhuman race...therefore, the very idea that the Holocaust had nothing to do with the concept of race is wrong. Whoopi was incorrect in that she was applying American views of race to the events of the Holocaust. The Nazis actually studied how racism was applied in the United States to Black people (Black codes, segregation etc) to find a way to put similar policies in place against Jews - then took it farther by committing genocide and killing Jews, Slavs, Homosexuals, Roma, and some Blacks. So while I understand what you are saying, the historical nature of what she claimed was incorrect. Race was applied and weaponized in a particular way under the Nazi regime.
The African American community is also sensitive towards the subject about slavery. I’m sure if a white person said what Whoopi said about slavery, the African American community would also feel very offended. Moral of the story, both the Jewish and the People of Color didn’t deserve what they went through, so people should educate themselves before speaking.

I've heard this idea floated in our community for some time along with ideas that mixed folks aren't black, etc. What do people with those beliefs think the definition and origin of race is? I also would like to know if folks holding those beliefs think race is a biological fact or social construct? The field of genomics has evolved quite a bit since we were taught genetics in primary school and I don't think some of our people are up to date on modern evidence in the field.
In the American context, given that she's an African-American woman (and as someone pointed out, in the acceptance of Jewish people came more easily than did the acceptance of black people and Jews are conventionally seen as white people in that context), race is 'something you can see' rather than an ahistorical confected construct that is in opposition to say, another (ie. white people vs x or y people), this is how 'racism' is seen Meanwhile, (Jewish) philosopher Hannah Arendt did talk in the context of what Goldberg said of 'man's inhumanity to man', the 'banality of evil' in relation to the Holocaust. It is so easy for us as a human 'race' to do these things to each other, that her point actually in the grand scheme of things makes sense. Settlers to indigenous people or aboriginal people, Israelis on Palestinians, British (sic) colonisers to black West-African people, Hutu and Tutsi, Tamil and Sinhalese etc. In her experience as an African American woman, perhaps simplistic is her worldview though unintentional, I can understand what she means. It's because Jewish people get sensitive about anything about the holocaust but get insensitive about black issues. Race is a social construct based prejudice. There is one race amongst us, human. I am Jewish and was not offended by what Whoopi said at all, nor was anyone in my family. We understood what she meant and didn’t view her statements as offensive. We are white. Some people (my ex boyfriend’s family for example) do not view me as white but that’s their prerogative. Whoopi shouldn’t have been suspended.

So, if you put a Jewish man or woman in front of us they appear white. Even today, there are white Jews and Jews who identify as racially white. So, that alone is confusing, which makes Jewish seem more like an ethnic group than a race separate from whites. I have a question! What race are the Jews? I checked out the 6 races & the only category the Jews fits into is the White race. I think it stems from the delusion some blacks have that they are the only people in history that has been oppressed. @Angela Bronckhurst there is a big difference between being jewish and being black. Jews are not a race they are an ethnoreligion, ashkenazi Jews are literally white. Jews like other with ethnicities have defining features but for the most part you cannot tell an ethno Jewish person from a standard white person. Black people are a race, there is no way for a black person to not look black.

The suspension was the wrong call. They easily could have turned it into a teachable moment: invite scholars and academics to spend half a show educating the audience (and Whoopie) and finish with her apology at the end on screen and a message about the importance of understanding the Holocaust. Instead, they punished someone for sharing an ignorant opinion where no malicious intent was involved. This suppresses conversations. The reaction will instead be "Well, I better not say anything about x topic because I can get suspended or lose my job if I am wrong" when the reaction should be "I should educate myself on these topics and recall there could be other points of view and I could be incorrect and expect that if I am wrong I will have to accept that and be called to account and discuss it". I would feel this way even if it was something said about the Black experience. I think the entire thing was badly handled.

At the time of these events between around 1938-1945 - they invented the idea that Jews were a separate subhuman race...therefore, the very idea that the Holocaust had nothing to do with the concept of race is wrong. The Nazis actually studied how racism was applied in the United States to Black people (Black codes, segregation etc) to find a way to put similar policies in place against Jews - then took it farther by committing genocide and killing Jews, Slavs, Homosexuals, Roma, and some Blacks. So while I understand what you are saying, the historical nature of what she claimed was incorrect. Race was applied and weaponized in a particular way under the Nazi regime.

But can we have a whole conversation about this topic that moves beyond what we feel or believe? I've heard this idea floated in our community for some time along with ideas that mixed folks aren't black, etc. What do people with those beliefs think the definition and origin of race is? I also would like to know if folks holding those beliefs think race is a biological fact or social construct? The field of genomics has evolved quite a bit since we were taught genetics in primary school and I don't think some of our people are up to date on modern evidence in the field.
In the American context, given that she's an African-American woman (and as someone pointed out, in the acceptance of Jewish people came more easily than did the acceptance of black people and Jews are conventionally seen as white people in that context), race is 'something you can see' rather than an ahistorical confected construct that is in opposition to say, another (ie. white people vs x or y people), this is how 'racism' is seen
Meanwhile, (Jewish) philosopher Hannah Arendt did talk in the context of what Goldberg said of 'man's inhumanity to man', the 'banality of evil' in relation to the Holocaust. It is so easy for us as a human 'race' to do these things to each other, that her point actually in the grand scheme of things makes sense. Settlers to indigenous people or aboriginal people, Israelis on Palestinians, British (sic) colonisers to black West-African people, Hutu and Tutsi, Tamil and Sinhalese etc.

When did it become possible to convert to a different ethnicity? Because I know that I can convert to Judaism, which would make me a Jew. I can convert to Islam, which makes me Muslim. Christianity, Christian, etc. But I never knew I could convert my race.
