What a great movie and to actual see how life was like in parts of East Los Angeles back in the early 1950’s.

It’s not correct to say this is how life was. Even as it told a side of society most movies avoided it is still very stylized. It’s more of how people of the day saw their daily lives with much of the violence watered down and particularly the policeman in authority giving hope. When I’m reality the police would’ve crushed that hope

We lived in Monterey Park by East Los Angels College so we could still be close to the Mexican markets. It is so true that Mexican fathers don't like to be called Pop. We loved this movie cuz our father was an ex boxer who retired 31-0. Art Aragon had nothing but praise for dad.

I used to box some and ive seen plenty of boxing movies, so far im at his second fight and of all the fight movies this has the most authentic boxing, , its not sensational where a guy gets hit with 50 haymakers and doesn't get knocked out, its extremely easy to knock out a person.

I grew up in the Los Angeles portrayed in this movie so it was somewhat painful for me to watch because it was reality for me. I grew up around Latino adults who were always bitter and angry because of the nowhere jobs they were stuck with. But like the boxer, Tommy, my mentors were all old white guys from the bus driver who waited for me when I was running late to the coaches and school teachers who believed I had potential. However, unlike Tommy my path to upward mobility was the US Army. I started off as a private and retired as an infantry officer. I thrived because those old white guys made me feel that I was a man no different nor better than anyone else and gave me the confidence to succeed as a Latino in a white society. In other words, while my Dad grew up seeing himself as a Mexican-American, I grew up seeing myself as a man. Oh, how so much has changed in 50 years.

Facts I grew up in el sereno just about 10 minutes from city terrace and my dad used to work 10-12 hour days just to make enough for rent and also food, I’m pretty thankful for the life I had it was hard since my dad was an alcoholic and sometimes it was rough but moving to NYC made me realize that how not everyone is fortunate enough

The USA is much stronger because of the multitude of different religions, cultures, and languages. Yes, there are many racists in this country such as DeSantis and Abbott and their supporters. But racism and discrimination are much less than it was in the '50s. I know that because I saw it then. It has been said that 'A person with two languages has two souls.' Let's celebrate the diversity in our country.
