He didn't want to do full-time MotoGP racing at that point, but I am sure he could have had a factory Ducati seat if he wanted to. He openly admitted to liking Superbike racing a lot more than MotoGP during that time in interviews.

The other reason I became a Ducati guy. I bought a 1999 Supersport and watched Bayliss win in 2001 and followed him throughout his career. We desperately need another Baylisstic missile. The auto painter turned WSBK Champ to race winner in Moto GP! Spanking future GP legends.
