    Transparency can mean who is actually grading the books. I remember comictom did a early video disputing how many graders actually grade a book. Cgc said they graded so many books at a specific con and by comictom's calculations, it was basically impossible for 2-3 graders to look at and grade every book. Of course he eventually took the video down. Along with that, the lack of grader notes is a huge issue. Those notes need to be available so it actually shows why the book got that grade. They need to be held accountable and to be able to make a case why a book received a certain grade. Without the notes, we are just supposed to take their word. If they are "experts" there shouldn't be any problem divulging how they arrived at the grade.

      @thepewbroswreeo5126 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they are getting better at notes but it is B.S. that they were so lax on that in the first place.

    When I was a child in the 70s, my mom would always stress that books were objects of respect; she'd never allow me to dog ear a page (that's what bookmarks are for,) highlight the book, or set a cool glass of milk onto the book!! Due to Mom's book-respect and the resulting childhood trauma it imparted upon me, I noticed right off how gently you handled this volume!! No cracking of the spine, no jerking of the pages to turn them using a pincher grip with index finger and thumb on a corner, and no slopping the glossy pages with your finger prints!! Momma Betsy would approve of you, young man! Thanks for the video, as always!

    • @BrysComics
      @BrysComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No because it’s not a useful comparison in my opinion…they use different standards and if you’re submitting to CGC it’s better for me to not meddle my info with overstreet info

      @@BrysComics I agree. Am just curious as to how similar they are. I have all 3 (1992,2003,2021) of the Overstreet grading guides here at my shop (Blue Moon Comics in San Rafael). The original is on a 100 point system. They changed to be more in line with the card industry for the 2nd release. We all thought when CGC came into existence that the base of the guidelines were from Overstreet but it morphed to an amalgam of their system and Overstreet. Also, originally CGC was a 3 grader process per book. I don't think they have time for that anymore! lol Used to send stuff to Matt Nelson way before he sold his restoration company to CGC. Good guy. Thanks for doing what you do. Very much enjoy your videos.

    Thanks for the video Bry. A few perspectives I took away from this video: Is the personal collector submitting to CGC going to need to buy a press, master the craft, and press their own books to keep up with the professional comic dealers? Am I going to need to contract with a Professional Presser to submit to CGC? Is Professional Pressing a booming business?…I know you are attempting to master the craft and offer the service in upcoming years. Keep grinding bro!✌🏼

    • @BrysComics
      @BrysComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose it depends on how many books you plan to submit and how important the grades are…most casual collectors I would recommend finding a good presser that has reasonable fees…but no one will love you books like you! Lol

    My question though is how does it compare to the Overstreet Grading Guide? I have a few different years of that book and find it very helpful. I'm not really interested in slabbing books and I only buy slabs when I can buy it for close for the raw price, so I'm wondering it's actual value to me. I don't think the argument that grading pressable defects harsher than before makes any sense.

    I got this several weeks ago just after it was released to the masses and think it's an incredibly useful tool for everyone. Like it or not, CGC is the benchmark standard for how the comic community universally discusses a book's grade. Having a shared linguistic standard for how we discuss, market, and make buying decisions for comics, particularly since so many transactions occur online, helps everyone to make more informed choices and also sheds light on flaws not normally mentioned in these transactions. How often have you looked online, checked a title on eBay, filtered those selections by grade and then saw 50 different "interpretations" of what a 9.6 is? This might help, at least among honest sellers, to price and market books with clarity. I also like this book because as the defacto grading service it gives submitters a better clue about what they can expect from a CGC grade (a soft "prescreen," if you will). I do wish they would provide an online tool similar to "onlinegradingtool" (something like that) that would allow folks to go through a checklist to prescreen a grade range as that would be even more beneficial for quickly assessing a book's condition, something more accessible for the generalist and new collectors and sellers. I also wish that the photographs in the back showing the different grades would have been more color-accurate and clear and noted similarly to Overstreet's guide. It's good content, but visually looks to me like an afterthought. I did discover yesterday that CGC has now released a hardcover edition including a signed/numbered series. It would have been nice to know that the hardcover was in the works because as nicely done as the softcover is it won't take too much regular use for that to show a beating. I'd much have preferred the hardcover but an not interested in spending another $50+/- to get one. The book is certainly eye-opening. Great video.
    Oh, I really enjoyed the topic of flaws and the addition/subtraction discussion. That was very cool information.

    @jcp4162 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for this review! It looks to me like they are still not being transparent and still excusing their inconsistencies with the old "grading is subjective" mantra. If you use a demerit system and carefully decide on how much to deduct for flaws you can greatly reduce subjectivity. Those "grade ranges “ look very difficult to understand and implement! Also, once they decide on a standard, they should NOT be changing it. (I’ll maybe excuse them if they discover a new type of flaw.) The two main goals in developing a grading system should be sensitivity and repeatability. Also just because they’ve written a book doesn’t make them transparent if they are still turning out grades with no graders notes!

    My only beef with CGC is that you can send them a signed book, with COA ( from say Dynamic Forces) and the give it a "qualified" grade because they didn't witness the signing. Its a monetization issue rather than authentication issue imho.

    • @coolworldpopculture
      @coolworldpopculture 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem with a COA, regardless of where it originated, is just that--it can originate anywhere. Even COAs from reputable dealers and vendors can be easily copied and if not copied, can have associated books switched out. So, while frustrating, CGC-witnessing is a really great protection for consumers. In my opinion.

    • @cwwheelz
      @cwwheelz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you know that CGC didn't authenticate ahead of time? It sucks to get that qualified grade but COAs aren't too hard to produce so I understand why they don't accept them. CBCS nor EGS use COAs either.

    • @digimook
      @digimook 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coolworldpopculture Im talking legitimate COA's in sealed bagged and boarded books with official stickers like DF and Clobberin Time use. Those are kind of hard to imitate. Reproducing a COA from Midtown Comics in NYC is pretty easy oth. Also kind of irksome because CGC has worked with Dynamic Forces on numerous occasions. So again, a monetization/business issue rather than forensic one.

    • @coolworldpopculture
      @coolworldpopculture 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@digimook I hear you. But as a graphic artist for most of my adult life with the right tools, motivations and opportunity I could forge just about anything. Obviously the tools and materials for creating lenticular labels, watermarks, embossment, and all of the things used to create these original protections are very easily sourced and are widely available. I'm not interested in debating this further, I'm just pointing out that a plastic bag with a glossy sticker is not enough merit to quantify authenticity especially when your corporate liability is held to account. So, yes, come to think about it, it is exclusively about money.
