Controlling the justice system was definitely the plan, but the SCOTUS's power is only ultimately propped up by the perception of its legitimacy. At the end of the day, it has no agents bound to enforce its decisions. So if you make your partisan grift too obvious (like these republicans are doing now), voters and their representatives and executives will just start ignoring decisions, and you're going to completely destroy the power of the court. This was a last-ditch effort to prop up a dying minority party that simply can't compete in fair elections anymore. They don't care about preserving the integrity of the constitution or our nation, and will happily burn everything to the ground if they can't control it.
