It's because they're probably not 'proper' fans so maybe don't have a huge amount of knowledge, it helps if the interviewer is a fan and knows a lot about them as the interview turns into more of a conversational style as opposed to ask question, not really listen to answer, ask unrelated question, not really listen to answer etc...
