I agree! I played with a member of a club. He acted like we were pulling his game down. He just sucked. The rest of us enjoyed our outing. He bowed out at the turn. We didn’t miss him. We played for fun! It’s a game at our level. ✌️

I have been watching all of your content for a couple years now and I can’t thank you enough for your grass roots training and techniques. I am a high handicapper and videos like this one about the scripts we run in our head while playing and how to stay within our level of play are so easy to implement on the course. A course I have been playing for a few years has beaten me up so badly because of the hills and hazards, severe dog legs, hitting over water and narrow fairways, I finally scored a 92 on this course last week. I know - I am happy about a 92, but that is a far cry from the 103’s and 104’s I used to put up. They paired me with some young fellas that could really drive the ball and I felt very tentative at first because I knew my skill level wasn’t up to theirs but right off the first tee I nailed a nice drive and was on the green in two, two putts and in the hole. Meanwhile, those guys were still looking for their balls in the woods. Your teaching on the mental part of the game is what has helped me the most. I don’t get mad, I relax and try to stay within my abilities, stay away from all hazards, matriculate down each fairway incrementally, lay up, use an 8 iron or even my hybrid to punch it as close to the hole as I can, try to 1 putt each hole, don’t always “go for it”, set my expectations to my ability and never listen to anyone else’s advice. The game has gotten much more fun because of you and my hope is to break 90 soon. Thank you and keep the content coming.

I’ve started using your definition of fun (now my definition) when playing golf and am using one of Not a Scratch Golfers mantras. “Give every shot the respect it deserves”
I played in very windy conditions today and on many holes I did not have a good probability of reaching the green. I did not get frustrated I decided to have fun and plan every shot and try and execute the shot. My short game touch was off and I just missed most par putts. (But using my feet had break direction correct!) But it was one of the most enjoyable rounds of the year.
On one hole, I put the ball in the front bunker on my second shot and thin the bunker shot across the green and cart path. By the time I rake the bunker and get to my ball everyone else is waiting for me to finish. I hit a mediocre shot onto the green. So I’m sitting 4 with a 17 foot putt. So instead of just giving a half ass attempt at making the putt. I take my time do a quick read of the break and make a good stroke. The ball goes in the hole and I save a bogey.
There were other holes were with a combination of wind and poor drives made getting on the green in 2 impossible. But in each case took a strategy that got me onto the green in 3 so I had a makable par putt. They all came close to going in, but it wasn’t in the cards today!
While everyone was complains about how cold and windy it was, I was enjoying playing in the wind for probably the 1st time ever.

Then practiced some toe down chipping and putts with the rule of 12 type system. Your insights are huge for me, coming back to the game after many years away. Great stuff. Fantastic advice on mental aspect of this most excellent game. Don’t focus on the Scheiße!! The good stuff!!

I never comment on YT videos, but I've been playing golf for a year now, HC of 22 and I see myself in SO much of what he's saying... golf really is a simple game that we overcomplicate. Hit a shot, walk to the ball (hopefully forward!), forget what you've just done, play within yourself and play another shot. Repeat. And remember, we all took this up to enjoy it. Nobody watching this has aspirations of being on the Tour, we play because we're supposed to enjoy it!! Great content

Thank you man, I haven't been golfing for the past few months due to a work relocation where I was supposed normally to have access to a golf course which didn't happen... After one month into my new job I had a mental breakdown and realized that if I stay there I might not be able to achieve my goal. But I got lucky enough to have people whom helped me to see things differently. I can only focus on my short game but that's good enough as this is where I am lacking. I going to finally golf next month for two weeks and planned 2 tournament and you are right, to remind us that we have to not care about others. And no go for the hero/ego shot, trust me when I'll finally be able to go golfing again I'll remind myself that I am grateful and lucky to be able to play and if I score great if I don't it's okay because I am finally where I want to be on a golf course. Thanks for your message, that video came at the right moment.

For the mere mortals that play the game, I'd love to see the Golf Channel start playing LOW-light reels. Tuning in and seeing pros top drives, slice OB, duck hook into lakes, pitch from one side of a green through the other, and three (or more) putt a few holes would do wonders to help us set our expectations for our games as well as make us feel better knowing that even pros hit bad shots.
Another TH-cam golfer that you've played with (Not A Scratch Golfer) once said something that reset my brain with respect to playing golf; he said "I'm not good enough to get mad". Damned right! As a 15 handicap, it was stupid of me to get angry about bad shots. I know I'm going to hit a lot of them!

The masters this year was great for that. I'm new to golf and understand Augusta was even harder than normal, but I counted 7 or 8 missed putts within 4 feet one afternoon and felt way better about my game. That was watching the leaders play as well, not the whole field.

I randomly got paired up at a course with a guy and his young (8yrs) son. After the first hole, I could tell he was VERY GOOD. Turns out he was "touring pro" (one of the junior tours, not PGA) good. After a few holes he thanked me for my "attitude" as a playing partner. I didn't come unglued after a crap shot, etc. He said most of the time when people find out what he does for a living, they are constantly apologizing for their game. He said...news flash... the beauty of golf is that we're each really there vs the course. He didn't really care about anyone's game but his. He did not understand someone who maybe plays "periodically" thinking they should be as good as a professional golfer. So, to your first point, don't sweat what others may think about your game...and sheist you got going on may pass...or not. Just enjoy!

Also, mental game is very important, and I have taken to heart the idea of not beating yourself up for hitting bad shots, merely clinically analyze what you did wrong for a few seconds but don't dwell on it and just play golf. It's a game after all.

Learning to not try to hit the perfect shot every time helped me break 100 last year. Last weekend I was struggling, partially because of a lingering injury and partially because it was my first time out on the course this year. In the back half of the 9 holes i played, I found that my 5 iron was THE club for me that round since its a lighter weight club with a different shaft than the rest of my set, it worked well since i couldn't swing as hard. I was very confidential with it and hit one of the best shots of my life. Confidentiality is the key

It’s a constant fight to not get too big for your boots. So i have to take long breaks. Mostly you are correct though. I start to see the other’s and wonder who they think they are

I can't tell you the number of times I've mentally taken myself out of the game. From a young age in middle school that's always been my problem. High school golf was decent, college golf was worse. Now im trying to make up for all the mental game as a 35yr old...
My expectations are always way too high, I make a birdie on one hole, my mental expectation is a bogey on the next hole... It's a mess...

no sur i dont practice golf
      its just about confidentiality
      and bob rotella
one listen to rotella putting out of your mind = the same as 10 hours of practice
You can practice lag putting to a tee in the ground. More effective than to holes

Good idea playing left handed to immitate an average golfer. I would have trouble shooting under 90 left handed though I easily shoot under 80 right handed. Knowing good strategy can save a huge number of shots though. As you point out, most average golfers cost themselves many shots without realizing it.

I strive to swing at 60%. I end up swinging 75 to 80%, but I can hit the center of the face, and that is better than swinging 90% and missing the center of the face.
