Tornado & Flying Scotsman at Carlisle 20 & 21 10 21

  • On two consecutive days, 60163 brought charter trains from the West Midlands via the Settle and Carlisle whilst 60103 returned them by the West Coast Main Line.
    I was on Carlisle station on both days but had to leave early on the Wednesday to travel to Glasgow for a Scottish Opera performance - yes, I do have other interests in life beside steam trains!
    Shunting and platform arrangements varied for each day and our hopes of seeing both locomotives together, alas, came to naught.
    As usual, plenty of other interest at the Citadel.

    Good memories of when the Flying Scotsman came here to Australia. Had the pleasure of getting a ride behind her back then with our 3801. Thanks for showing!

      Two very popular locos, two very busy days and a lot of editing - hopefully all worthwhile. Sadly, the season is now drawing to a close with it getting dark very early. Best wishes David.

    Hello Tim Superb Quality that we are used to in your shots you tell and explain the whole story in detail thank you so such.Regarding being blanked out by the pendilino you behaved like the gentleman l am sure you are! Nice shots of the Scotsman l never saw it in the light only in darkness never the less l filmed it at my local station when it was 90 mins down on Thursday and a lame duck being piloted by the 47.Looking forward to your next episode! Many thanks Brian - I've been filming FS again today and hope she makes it back without further AWS problems this time. Another disaster strikes in today's film - but of my own making this time! Hopefully I've learnt a lesson from it. Best wishes.

    21:43 Other than the smoke deflectors, that is the best looking front end of an engine on earth. It is a moving piece of engineering sculpture, that conforms to all the golden ratios and magic number from classical art.
    The best Ancient Greek Architects and Sculptors would have been happy with that! 👍
    As if they demolished the other 78no A3’s. In the future that will be as frowned upon, as the barbarians who demolished all the Classical Greek and Roman temples.

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nigel Gresley certainly knew how to design a locomotive. The double chimney and German smoke deflectors were added later for perfectly good operational reasons but - brother - didn't they ruin the appearance of a beautiful machine. The banjo dome wasn't part of the original, either, but I've always liked it - perhaps because that's how I've always known it.

    Thankyou for some wonderful video stayed away from the station on the 20th thinking it would be too busy, and watched Tornado at Lazonby.. Seeing your footage, wished now I had went as it was a very long and cold day on the 21st. Strange the very different movements between the two days and some of it very different to the normal. Certainly I had hope to catch both locos side by side so a great photo opportunity missed.
    Have been running about Carlisle station since I was a boy but now decided after Thursday that I am getting a bit long in the tooth to keep train spotting. Spotted myself on the far away platform in front of the Scotsman as she left. look forward to watching your videos in the future rather than attending in person. Cheers John K.

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, given recent events involving Flying Scotsman, the station wasn't nearly as hectic as I had expected. At least at Carlisle there's always something going on whereas (I know from long experience) the days can be long and tedious if you're filming trackside by the Settle & Carlisle.
      Sorry that you feel the time has come to give up being physically present - but I'll have to reach the same conclusion one of these days - so I hope I can bring some of it home to you for a while yet.
      Good to hear from you John - take care and stay well.

    I had a beautiful shot like that ruined a few years ago at Grosmont. I was stood in the loco yard ready to film Scotsman coming out of the tunnel, and I got the dreaded message on my IPhone - “Memory full”.
    It was only one of the most spectacular scenes that has ever happened on earth, so never mind.

    • @schoolshorts

      I had a similar experience some years ago at Quintinshill (scene of the appalling 1915 disaster) with a once-in-a-lifetime line-up of trains - not the card that time, but the battery. It's a good job the spot is so isolated - there was no-one around to hear the mouthful of expletives!

    Tim , you’re a legend! That swearing made me laugh😂 😂….. unfortunately the Scotsman looks beautiful but is once again showing her age. The Tornado is however an absolute piece of magic and could easily run timetabled scheduled trains without fear of delay.

      Thanks Luath - absolutely stunning performance. I first played in the orchestra pit for Gondoliers 55 years ago - and this was the finest production I've ever seen.

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, I saw the Gondoliers the previous Saturday - Wednesday was Utopia Limited, a VERY rarely performed work - I don't know why it has disappeared from the repertoire - it's witty, highly musical and amazingly relevant to many of today's problems. Not very well attended at the Theatre Royal, I'm afraid.

    • @luath5579
      @luath5579 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@schoolshorts We saw Utopia at the King's Theatre, Glasgow, in the 1980s - great fun! The thing that was most 'limited' was the amount of material used in the tunics of the chorus LOL. I expect the reason it's seldom performed is because of the huge supporting cast/chorus. Not cheap in terms of cast wages. David

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@luath5579 Fascinated by your reply, as the Scottish Opera programme states "Utopia Limited was not performed professionally in Scotland during the twentieth century."
      I didn't think that the cast of Utopia was any bigger than that of Gondoliers - Utopia was given a concert performance staged in a simple version, probably wisely given the limited attendance.

    • @luath5579
      @luath5579 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@schoolshorts I checked with my partner and he agrees that it was definitely Utopia we saw at the King's Theatre, Glasgow, in the mid-1980s. I think the performance was by the Glasgow Gilbert & Sullivan Society (or some such name), so I expect Scottish opera consider them to be amateurs, not professionals. That could also be the reason for the huge cast: everyone in the G&S Society had to be found a role in the production.

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I knew that FS had failed but not the reason. I guessed at the AWS because this is not the first time it has failed (see my video - 60103 An Ignominious End to the Day - 24.07.21).
      It's a great shame that trips are spoilt by the failure of a modern piece of technology which was not part of the original locomotive but - that's the world we live in. Best wishes.
