Always wondered where the buried portal was. It looks like someone has tried digging upwards to re expose it. Your a stones through away from possibly the greatest tunnel explore of them all, Standedge. It’s a thing of an engineering masterpiece, with The twin main operational line, the two redundant single bore lines and the canal tunnel snaking under them all at a slightly lower level. The canal gave way and helped construct the first single bore which I turn over the years followed a pattern of the outgoing one helping to construct the upgrade. The two redundant tunnels which run parallel to each other, join at some midway point to form what’s called the cathedral.
Hello Ant - greetings from Poland. I've just finished watching all The Disused Railway videos you've made (82). I can't thank you enough for making all these superb videos. You give so much information, fun facts and historical noters. I had ittle knowledge of the lines you visited. I now can link how all the lines worked, where thet went and what they were used for. I origianlly come from south west Manchester so can appreciate how important all the railways were to the growth of this part of the UK. Another excellent video, but I think you have missed a chunk of this railway to the west of Stalybridge station, The line originally started from a junction off the line from Denton to Guide bridge and bypassing it, through a station called Hooley hill to the south and running parallel to the line to and through Stalybridge on a separate viaduct (long demolished) along the Ashton-Dukinfield boarder. It would be great if you could give this a visit as well. One piece of evidence is a white tiled bridge abutment on wharf street Dukinfield. Keep up the good work.
I live in Greenfield and love doing this walk with my dog, have never got as far as the portal though😅 also my sister once told me there was a train crash along the bridle path at 6:53 of this video for and wasn't there a viaduct running through the village at one point

It's a shame that most of the stations are no longer with us, but what a fantastic trip into the tunnel. I loved the way you got to the very end and up on top of the in-fill, I could feel my heart fluttering when you were up there and then took the long view back - brilliant. I also think someone's tried to dig their way out!!!!!
Amazes me the differences in tunnel architecture, not like today with boring precast concrete. Best get down to the barbers and get that hair sorted🤣🤣🤣

Are you going to do the tunnels in woodthorpe park to thorneywood and the one from the old brickyard which goes under mapperley plains down to sneinton I believe and there’s an old bridge on near the top of woodthorpe drive which was part of the old brick works to and I believe it was a tramway. Keep the videos coming they are very informative and entertaining 👍
Hi Ant, Stalagtites grow from the roof downwards, think of a pair of tights hanging on a line and stalagmites, s'pose M for mouse? but guess the tights for tites will sink in... Your video's are just brill thankyou, Chris in Derbyshire..

hiya ant , i keep asking people to come and look at twenty bridges on our former whelley loop line in wigan , it s crammed with incredible railway history and some cool relics too . it had three lines and two viaducts across one valley . we have two signal box rubbles , too , great films mate , best wishes from nick in wigan still in lancashire
For a change, I didn't do any digging at this tunnel... but never say never 😉 Also if you get to the site of Staley and Millbrook railway station, look down the embankment towards the houses on the hill above, you will see the last remnants of the brick base to a signal post, though last when I went to examine it, rather muddy and plenty of brambles, so wear wellys! But apart from that, only a tiny bit of evidence for the building by the road side, everything else apart from what I mentioned is gone 😥
Witchcraft was carried out in the tunnel in the 1970s and a police Land Rover use to drive in the tunnel to check activity.there was marking on the wall.there was a over bridge just before entrance to tunnel on Uppermill side.use to walk over the disused line on my paper round.great video.?
Ant, great use of old B&W pic's. How much walking to do the full series??? For a idea, how about doing a vid on former train station that have been made into private residents, with some of the back story and maybe a walk thru. Might be fun.

Yes I was wondering why the southern end of the tunnel had been obliterated and infilled? Probably wouldn’t take much to remove the infill and allow the whole tunnel to become part of a linear walk/cycle path as has been done with a few tunnels.

As you came up to Well-i-hole road/Manchester Road that was actually a deep cutting into a short tunnel.

where you are at 2 mins 30 the filled in tunnel was to the right of the now path and came out at the now layby on the otherside
