I know this is 'easy' stuff. BUT this is why I believe I need this. I was belted and shouted at so many times in all the years of maths (at school) for asking for things like where did maths come from, fairly basic questions for kids you'd think It actually makes recalling how to add and other basics really hard under pressure (like when there are fractions or any conflicts in the room!) because of the many teachers who had nothing to give because they in turn had also been badly taught. It's resources like this video where maybe there is a chance that I too am allowed to know some of the mysteries of the universe that educators of several generations in the last century made sure to deny access to.
I started my journey in math last year after finally defeating my childhood traumas associated with it. I finally discovered how magical math can be and I'm so in love with it. How is it going for you?
@@Ribula1 Wow and are you good at it after defeating the childhood trauma? I'm curious. I've had bad experiences with math too for my whole life due to the pressure when I was a kid, but also because I didn't care about school at all back then.
This video doesn't cover the basics at all. Or rather, it only covers the basics and NOT the fundamentals. No great mathematician would ever learn/understand numbers like this. This half-assed, lecture/information/rule based teaching and learning is the primary cause of failing at higher levels since the fundamentals aren't undestood. It took me an effortful and strained 5 hours over 3 days to fully understand what I just mentioned here, yet it's treated as some random thing. In fact, you cannot truly understand addition or subtraction without them. You can only practically utilize numbers, but you will never understand them. Conflating practical utility with understanding is a huge error made by nearly all. All that's to say, my friend... You need to look even deeper than this. You might think that because this is Kindergarten math it might not be interesting, but when you learn it in Kindergarten they don't explain the "why" to ANYTHING because you're a stupid, wild child who needs to be bribed with gummy candy to sit still and do your homework. Explanations go over your head. By the time you're old enough to comprehend any you're already out of school and so unless you refresh yourself it remains unexplained. All of this means that, even though I know what 2+2 is, this is still blowing my mind. Explaining what equation means, WHY something subtracted by another is what it is, instead of just saying THAT it is, all of that and more is completely glossed over when you first learn it. Learning it for a second time here is, again, blowing my mind.

Hi Dave, thanks for this awesome intuitive content. I plan to become a Python programmer and start my journey from Basic arithmetic to Linear algebra, Inshallah. May Allah bless your life with bountifulness.
Honestly, I’m not super lost on math but there were some little (but important) things I missed out on due to things completely out of control. I’m a sophomore now, and I had not been taught division and knew very little multiplication. Year after year, more and more was added. Being asked to build a house when I knew nothing past how to make the foundation. I’d be embarrassed when confronted, but also far too embarrassed to explain why I didn’t know. My childhood wasn’t golden, and it is something I found myself wishing to hide for a better image. I don’t think it helps that my brain has trouble even processing normal things. I’d been treated badly by a lot of people and now you could tell me the sky was orange and I’d doubt my eyes in favor of your claim. I’d feel the need to believe. You know whats terrible? I was shamed and they moved on. No one took the time to teach me. And I felt dreadfully ashamed to look it up. I got over it though, and here I am. No matter what it was that brought anyone older here, It's okay! We all have reasons and you being here and wanting to learn on any of these is wonderful. Lots of us had no control over it and no one took us back to the opportunity. I promise you all that math can also be fun, and very pretty when done correctly. (I love how it looks, and how nice it is to complete something complex) I’m proud of you. Refresh, relearn, or start-up. It's all very good.
but dave i learned subtraction is associative because subtraction should added separately 5-3-2 => 5-5 =>0. you can't do 5-3-2 => 5-(3-2) because 3 and 2 has minus symbol. To do in correct way 5-3-2 => 5-(3+2) here, i took minus has common outside the bracket =>5-5 =>0.
I really want to study Astrophysics but I'm scared of the math. I 'm dedicating myself to this course for the next few months so that I'll be ready in the Fall. I can do this. I can master math. Thank you for much for this indepth breakdown. I'll porbably comment on every video I watch as a check mark ;)
Since I started school, I've fallen behind. I would miss at least a day of school a week. Then it turned into 2, then 3, 4, and then I just stopped going. The last time I was properly in school was year 6. 4 years ago. I mainly stopped because of how bad my math's was and I was too embarrassed. I've just started homeschooling so now I'm relearning math's. I'm going to stick with it and now that I understand how important it is, and actually have a little interest in it I'm going to learn.
Really enjoying this channel. However it is not fair to say that subtracton is not associtive being that it is left associtive (as shown in the video 6:14 ).
Im a 12th grader who wants to study computer science but i had choosen a lower level math i didnt know my skills and i didnt put effort, im hoping with this i get into m y dream college and redo all maths during summer up to precal wish me luck
there is a big mistake, its often thought the symbol "Minus" or "plus" is only a operation, but, really is the sign of the right number (The symbol says about if the number is negative or positive). So, subtraction and addition are commutative and associative, because the sign always have to be with its corresponding number.

You are proving that subtraction is not associative by writing all that.
@@ProfessorDaveExplains okay dave.
This content was full of great tips!
I'm following and I'm enjoying the lesson.
Thank you for producing this !!!!
Dave has amazing mathematics language 😮😮😮
Since I started school, I've fallen behind. I would miss at least a day of school a week. Then it turned into 2, then 3, 4, and then I just stopped going. The last time I was properly in school was year 6. 4 years ago. I mainly stopped because of how bad my math's was and I was too embarrassed. I've just started homeschooling so now I'm relearning math's. I'm going to stick with it and now that I understand how important it is, and actually have a little interest in it I'm going to learn.
im brushing up on my math skills to get a masters in robotic engineering and i learned something from this video. idk what to think rn X'D
Thanks for producing this series!
You make every video interesting!
So many brave people. Including mum who was 8 when the war started and she lived in north London throughout the bombing. Scared for life. RIP
Certainly Dave is great!
I don’t know why but when you said the simplest math it was like the hardest
I have exams in 2 weeks and this course is my last hope
Where are u from bro
I want to ask some thing can u ?
Best best best....only word i have ❤️
Love from India Guruji 🙏😃
Really enjoying this channel.
However it is not fair to say that subtracton is not associtive being that it is left associtive (as shown in the video 6:14 ).
Thank you professor
Thank You!
Professor Dave.
The Ainu number system is amazing. Imagine having to tell 6*20 then subtract 10 and adding a number like 5 to make 115.
You're an inspiration 😇. Thanks a lot Professor Dave 😄
Im a 12th grader who wants to study computer science but i had choosen a lower level math i didnt know my skills and i didnt put effort, im hoping with this i get into m y dream college and redo all maths during summer up to precal wish me luck
Ma shaa Allah ..that's an amazing work..respect from morocco
there is a big mistake, its often thought the symbol "Minus" or "plus" is only a operation, but, really is the sign of the right number (The symbol says about if the number is negative or positive). So, subtraction and addition are commutative and associative, because the sign always have to be with its corresponding number.
the intro changed!!
it's true! since i'm doing math and history and italian now, it's not just the science stuff anymore!
Where is my dearest biology? :'(
I'm excited to see how far I can go in this language of mathematics
I'm in middle school rn and I really need this since I'm failing in math
If I only knew about this channel earlier. ❤
Thanks dear professor
Thank you, professor!
Gonna start this series now. Hope that it will help me for the upcoming College Entrance Test :>
