I love grunt. He is a very underrated character. I especially like the tan version of him and Clutch.

A couple things I noticed...the lower leg sculpts are the same for both the right and left leg, and his belt buckle is the Hasbro logo!

Interesting thing about the backward American Flag mentioned at 8:59 : American Flags appeared that way - with the star field in the upper right - because it is to visually simulate a poled flag waving behind them as the soldiers charge into battle.

the original grunt was a great vietnam era figure. The solid uniform and the M16A1 with the 20rd magazine are right out of the 60s. The only modern thing is the helmet which looks like a stylized version of the PASGT helmet which in my opinion is the best looking combat helmet ever.

When I first got into GI JOE, I thought Grunt was the Joe equivalent of the Cobra Trooper. I thought the name Grunt was just the term used to describe the GI JOE trooper. It wasn't until I saw his file card and saw it referred to as a code name and the character had an individuals name that I realized it was a single character.
That's the one thing I always wished they did with the GI JOE line. Make some GI JOE trooper type figures. Think of all the variants they could have made. You could have GI JOE infantry soldiers of different genders and ethnic back grounds. I imagined each infantry would come with the same assortment of weapons and gear so you could customize their specialty. Some could be made to be standard infantry, others could be heavy weapons or support.
Then my idea started branching out to pilots, sailors, medical support, and so on. Just imagine the USS Flagg with a full compliment of navy personnel. Sailors and flight deck crews of various backgrounds and of course pilots. The pilots would be easy. Just make a Male and female version dressed in a full flight suit with a helmet with the visor down and breather mask on. Sure they would be nameless and faceless but that's were your imagination would come in. You could name them whatever you want. You could designate one as Ace's co-pilot and so on.
If they ever bring back a line of GI JOE, I hope they give the Joe's some trooper type figures that fill various roles like infantry, pilots, sailors, even support like mechanics or medical staff cause you know Doc, Lifeline, and Stretcher gotta be worn out at the end of the day if they're the only medics. Also think of all the variants that could exist. Maybe release a few really hard to find variants.

Don't know if you have the 25th anniversary 2 pack that came with Red Star and a very plain, olive drab Duke. Switch the heads and gear between the Grunt and the Duke and you have a much better Grunt. The plain Duke even comes with an M-16.

So how do you get your hands on vintage Joes? I never had any of the 82 or 83, my years were 95 on, I can't actually remember my firts Joe (I know, sacrilidge) but I do remember the ones I had. And looking back on it I actually had quite a few. I think I was a pretty lucky kid. I didn't have too many vehicles, though, I used to make my Joe's vehicles out of lego. I remember making a bad ass chopper out of lego for my Joe's. Land vehicles were a bit harder as the wheels were way too small, so it just looked a bit crappy.

Brad Craven I’ve got a comic store near me that takes vintage toys/collectibles on consignment, they’ve got stuff all the time, flea markets and garage sales near me never seem to have anything I’d want sadly. I’d think there would be some sites online dealing in vintage Joes.
