This song has saved my life in many ways. I still cry when I hear it. I am not a person who thinks religion is effective. I do not think it is even helpful. But the faith that this song expresses makes me want to believe.
... of course religion is effective. You really don't think it has any positive effect? So many would be lost without it. It gives them order and community for people of similar mind and spirit. I'm not religious and aware of its atrocities, more people been killed in the name of X than probably everything else combined. But it definitely has a very profound effect on many ordinary individuals
Someone randomly sent me this when I was at one of my lowest points in life. I cried
We were fortunate enough to host Sweet Honey in the Rock at my college, Haverford, in the early 90s. The a cappella group I was in had a couple of their songs in our repertoire, which was how I was Introduced to their music.
I still can’t hear this song without crying. For utter joy. The passion, the beauty, the hope and the pain are so honest, so acute, and so immediate in every note. It overwhelms me. They are an American treasure.

I have no idea how I came across this group but am so thankful I did. What this sound does to a broken mind and body is nothing but blissful medication for the soul.
I Love (with a capital L) everything Sweet Honey and Bernice Johnson Reagon have ever done - but this song is my favorite ever. As with everything, Dr. Reagon reaches deep into a place for the words, the sounds, and the spirit. This piece should finish with Amen.
