  • The winter storm swell from ‘Storm Doris’ hitting the breakwater of Porthcawl Harbour, South Wales.
“Storm Doris’ was the official, understated name given by the Met Office. Although the main storm went north it still produced a large swell along the Bristol Channel coast.
To give some idea of the wave size, the cast iron lighthouse at the end of the pier is 30 feet high. This does not include the height of the actual wall itself.
The waves hit the breakwater at high tide which on average is 9 to 10 metres (27 to 30 feet) above the low tide mark. Although it can be as much as 12 metres. This is one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world.

The storm we had a few years ago were throwing up some big rocks. The local golf club also had fish on the fairways!!

That wall really gets a hammering. It has been there for over a 100 years.

Pretty awesome ! We got some great storms on the French west coast with some incredible waves too !

The West coast of France does take the full force of the Atlantic storms, good surfing beaches. What gives us some big waves is our massive tide, it is 10m between low and high tide.

The breakwater lets you get safely get close to the breaking waves. A bit of trivia - that pier was used in the last series of 'Sherlock' - it was meant to be Norway.

To give some idea of size, the white lighthouse is 30 feet high (that's not counting the sea wall itself).

Those waves are so stunning. What speed did you shoot them at?

The titles and the waves smashing against each other and hitting the wall at around 0.38 were shot at 50fps played back at 50%. The rest was shot at 25fps
