You are brave to comment on Lolita. I read it long ago and it goes into my category of: books I didn't want to like (or love) but did because they are so well written.
Ha ha ha “we’re not going to think too much about it right now “ good advice! Ok these are all very weird books. I appreciate unique books but I’d have to say 9/10 weird books just go over my head in what point they are making. 😂
It's good seeing you embracing your new Mean Girl of Booktube status 😂😂😂 but black lippy round off the look. But Mickey Mouse top is on point. A Couple of weird book recommendations "Under the Skin" by Michel Faber. "Tin Drum" by Gunter Grass. Go well Shelly.
I'm going through my Goodreads list to see what the weirdest books are I've read, and probably the weirdest one is "Dr. Rat" by William Kotzwinkle. The story is told from a super-rat's point of view from inside a scientific research lab, and simultaneously expresses other animal's viewpoints around the world - a pig, a bear, and others that slip my mind. (I read it in 1981). It is hard to put down and very thought provoking. The conclusion is remarkable, and I have been a vegetarian ever since reading it, although neither of my parents quit eating meat after reading the book, so I don't think it will affect everyone the same. I've never looked at animals the same way since.
I love a weird book and have enjoyed many of these titles. I added a few to my TBR, so thanks for the recommendations. Have you read Ottessa Moshfegh? Death in Her Hands and Eileen would both fall under the unhinged women category. I didn’t particularly love either, but her writing seems to be polarizing. Chlorine is a book from that category which I’ve recently enjoyed. It focuses on a young woman who is a competitive swimmer and becomes obsessed with the idea of becoming a mermaid.
All I can say is that this is so much me as I am always reading weird books 📚 and I always will prayers and blessings for you and your family love your Aussie family friend John xxx
What a great episode. Maybe I am attracted to weird books I have read Perfume Lolita and love Virginia Wolfe. Have you read The Master and Marguerta thats a very weird but great book
"...feel like letting my freak flag fly..." is a line from David Crosby's song Almost Cut My Hair written in 1969 and is included on the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young album Deja Vu released in 1970.
Lolita is a masterpiece. It's disturbing, but that was the point. Plus, it is extremely hilarious and tragic! You can see the damage Humbert did to her...
I’d have to add Ottessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation to this category… the most bizarre book I’ve read in recent years.. maybe ever! It’s weird .. it’s disgusting… and I pretty much hated it! 😂
Women don't get much more unhinged than C. J. Skuse's "Sweetpea". The TV adaptation was a disappointment but the book (and sequels) are hilariously macabre!
Ohmygosh I posted a video today where I talk about how I’m going to have a really hard time with Lolita. Your insight is helpful! Also, for the unhinged woman narrative, I’m seeing books on the other end of a woman’s life: perimenopause. I’m in that journey now so I can totally relate to the unhinged woman 😂.
Perfume - I've seen the movie and I have the book but want to leave more time between watching the film before I read. But at the same time, I really want to watch the film again 🙃
I think it helps when reading Lolita, to realize that the narrator, Humbert Humbert, has schizophrenia. That explains his utter fascination with words, and bizarre persecution fantasies.
I just thrifted a book haul of 231 books for 37 dollars for my book giveway at applebees( 3701 Veterans Memorial Blvd, Metairie, LA 70002). I am the host there. I have given away over 2600 books for babies kids teens and adults in 10 months. I just dropped 2 videos showing the haul . Let's get this generation reading
I just found your channel and found this video interesting - have some new additions to my TBR! Your first category description made me think of a very weird book I read this year: Lojman by Ebru Ojen.
Perfume is just hypnotic. You can’t shake it off.
Yes!!
You are brave to comment on Lolita. I read it long ago and it goes into my category of: books I didn't want to like (or love) but did because they are so well written.
Why, thank you! I love Nabokov's writing, but feel shy to comment on it on the internet.
Great recommendations. ♥️ Unhinged women are my fav weird books. Loved The Harpy and All Yours recently.
Adding Harpy to my TBR.

You're not alone! I have a hard time with weird books too.

A Couple of weird book recommendations "Under the Skin" by Michel Faber.
"Tin Drum" by Gunter Grass.
Go well Shelly.
I’ll wear black lipstick in my next video.
I’ve added Faber and Grass to my list.
❤📚📚❤️
Perfume is on my "want to read" list. I've added Vita Nostra now. Thank you for these weird book recommendations.
You are welcome! I love Vita Nostra!

I absolutely agree.
I just finished perfume yesterday! I really enjoyed it. Such a weird, great ending
It’s such a strange one, but I loved it too!
Great concept for a video!
Thank you!!!! ❤️❤️
I love a good weird book. Bunny was definitely one of those for me. 😊💙
It is such a good one!
A great unhinched woman character in literature is Miss Heversham in Charles Dickens Great Expectations or wilkie Collins The Woman in White
Oh! Thanks for this!!
I’d have to add Ottessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation to this category… the most bizarre book I’ve read in recent years.. maybe ever! It’s weird .. it’s disgusting… and I pretty much hated it! 😂

I really ought to watch Perfume. Thank you!!
After listening to this, it seems like I might like “weird”, I’m going to give one of these books a try, thank- you.
Let me know what you think!

There is a creepy movie adaptation of Perfume. I'm currently reading My Lovely Wife and am thinking that all the characters are unhinged!
Adding My Lovely Wife to my TBR.
@@Shellyish Yikes! Just finished it and I was right...everyone was unhinged...including the author!!
I read a weird book recently: Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge... it really is unusual, good but horrifying in parts too.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Let your freak flag fly is now my new favorite motto 😜🤪
Ha!!
Read “The Balaur”
Okay.
Yeah, those are a little too weird for me.
Ha! Fair enough.
