rick wow quite a list of drummers to check out and i only recognize 4. i’m taking my time watching all of the vids. im familiar with them, but dan i play all them ... no. if i watch them all at once i’ll be in a rush to work on each of them and have total focus on each. so any comments on each will be delayed until i get there. great job as usual 👌
Rick, you mentioned the physical demand of playing the traditional samba bass drum pattern; what are your thoughts on leaving out every other "ah," like Jeff Porcaro does on Africa?
Yes, you can do that but the Toto tune Africa is more of a Mozambique/Rock feel than a Samba. Just don't play the bass drum too heavy like in the Pop/Rock style if you are playing a traditional samba. A good pop samba equivalent is Donald Fagan's the Goodbye Look which I believe Porcaro also plays on.
Thank you so much for talking about my country's music once again. If you'll allow me, i would like to suggest some songs for people to listen to. This is a Baião Jazz played in a very traditional way by drummer Cleber Almeida: th-cam.com/video/1aHDPFlj3Bk/w-d-xo.html These are examples of other Jazz Baiãos played by the great drummers of Brazilian music, Nenê and Marcio Bahia. Nenê: th-cam.com/video/oW4yI6y_VFE/w-d-xo.html Marcio Bahia: th-cam.com/video/-aT0YLLW4y4/w-d-xo.html These are more traditional baiões, outside the context of Jazz. Luiz Gonzaga: th-cam.com/video/MohOURp_UgQ/w-d-xo.html Jackson do Pandeiro: th-cam.com/video/YG296vwFRHk/w-d-xo.html
