"Travis isn't that good a drummer" I hear that all the time. Baffles me. The thing about him that make some love him more than every drummer is his style. Not just his playing style but his writing style. Every beat he hits is perfect for the music. It's technical but more importantly, it fits perfectly.
They have probably only heard him play some of his rap stuff (which I generally disapprove of I must say!) and decided they could form an opinion on that basis. No serious drummer could possibly say that in the light of the all-round talent he's demonstrated over the years.
Technique wise Travis isn’t a good drummer but that doesn’t mean that he’s bad at the the drums, it just means that he’s hurting himself in the long run. By all means I’m a fan of Travis’s work and love blink so I’m not hating on them or Travis
From my understanding, most of the criticism isn't about his skill as a drummer, as much as it is about HOW he plays drums. In terms of raw talent and skill, he's one of the best performing right now, CERTAINLY the best there's ever been in the pop-punk genre. But his drumming TECHNIQUE is awful, namely in that the way he hits the drums, the way he holds his sticks, are a good way to ruin your hands and fingers in the long run. This is actually something Travis has acknowledged himself in his book, but it's the way he learned how to play, and it's entertaining to watch, so he sticks with it. If anything, the fact that his technique is so weak actually speaks to his talents even MORE, because despite playing the drums in a way that would make any seasoned drumming instructor cringe to oblivion, his speed, creativity, and skill are STILL among the best in the industry.
