🎸💯 I loved Eric Clapton's "Cocaine" at first listen; but, sadly NOT this version‼🔥
There was lots of coke around when that song was released & there were lots of us doing it, too. Seriously‼
I've ALWAYS been a Clapton (Slow Hand) fan‼ The man has been performing for most of my life & that's crazy‼🤯 I've been able to see him in concert multiple times in different venues‼The 2nd or 3rd time in Charlotte, NC was the greatest‼☮ ❤ 🎶
(MrLboyd, are you familiar with Jackson Brown? You should REALLY check out his catalogue of amazing music! His Running On Empty is an amazingly, fantastic album‼)

Eric's (Studio) Version of this song is my favorite version of this song. The guitar solo(s) from the studio version is what mainly influenced me to go buy my very first guitar at the age of 12. lol
Now 24 years later, its still one of my favorite songs to play on guitar!
JJ Cale wrote this song in 1976 and Eric covered and recorded it about a year later. The studio version just said "Cocaine" and then I believe after he got sober, he added the "Dirty Cocaine" into the chorus when performing Live. At least that's my theory.

I remember hearing this for the first time when I was staying with my mother. One of the guys that liked my sister was a junkie, and they didn't want him around the house, so they would send him out places. I went with him once, and we ended up cruising the back roads of rural NE CT in his old Ford van, that happened to be white, lol. It was pretty fun just riding back roads listening to music. This was one of the songs that came on the radio. He was a pretty good guy and cool too. I liked him. But my mother and her husband didn't want him around. So he eventually stopped coming over.

I do love your honest reaction to this, and the meaning of the song (to Clapton) has changed over the years.
He has gone from a a user and addict to a key person in rehabilitation and help.
He has his "own" clinic which hosts a music festival every year in order to raise funds for other addicts.
    However...
the fact is that is wasn't HIS song... it was an cover of a JJ Cale song as was After Midnight and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Call Me The Breeze"
It just covered his mood and addiction at the time.
If you would like another cover, the please listen/react to Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt"...one you will never forget

Many/most rock and roll musicians from the 1960's and 70's are experts on drug use. You should check out the Rolling Stones ' Sister Morphine from the No Security live album. The mood is a whole lot more somber.
The great thing about Eric Clapton concerts is that even the hits have new solos and extra arrangements that make the songs different from the album version you've heard a thousand times 🎸

I prefere the original: less is more! There is an live video of JJ Cale made shortly before he died. You can't miss the message. In Sweden "Blomman" [Bo Blombergh] made a cover "Heroine" in 1977. Young people in Sweden died from heroine at the time.

From what I understand from his biography, EC Had a lot of heavy drugs problem, a bit like Osbourne when he hit the ground. That's the way Clapton used to think of cocaine. If I'm not mistaken he wrote that song when he was still using a abusing coke a lot. Probably a way to explain how your mind gets clouded when you're under the influence of this drug. It seem so harmless when you take it but the feedback is not immediate like harsher drugs like crack and heroin.

I font feel it's a duble entendre. It's a straight up song about coke ..someone can correct me, but I don't think he uses symbolism....ad far as it being an advertisement. In the 70's it was about lyrical freedom. Nobody openly complained about the topic that I can remember. This was a single that was played daily on AM radio

They are old here. Yes, the substance personified as a seductive woman (which, BTW, I hate). It was quite the song in its day (not this old guy performance) and controversial. Parents didn't like it, obviously, but it was a bit rebellious. The substance was a rich person thing, especially in the celebrity world, not just rock, either, but the film industry, also. Again, an example of what can be sold with a party vibe. This was a big dance song at clubs. I've never been a fan of reality altering things. 💜

not at all - it is a song AGAINST using it - that it gives you a false sense of everything - back in the 80/90 a lot of "normal" people did a line a time or two - quicker that weed!!! He says it is an anti-drug song - watch his interviews about it!!! GREAT SONG!!!! GREAT!!!!! he is one of the top 4 guitar players in the world!! PS he kicked his habit & is now clean & sober!!! Most musicians in the 60-90's did coke - all genres - Even Satchmo Armstrong himself got busted once for it!!! It was rich man's drug - we normal folks had to smoke weed!!! AN ICONIC SONG - MOST FOLKS KNOW IT IN THE FIRST 4 BARS!!!!!!

If you want songs about substance abuse that are audibly good, Metallica - master of puppets, Nirvana - come as you are, Rolling Stones - brown sugar and dead flowers are both good, Billy Joel - Captain Jack, nine inch nails - hurt... All of which are rather pointed to one specific substance. But all of which are anthems that could be tossed back as a refutation of the rap drug promotion argument.
