    I own the f/1.2 50mm L and still will get the 1.8 when it is on offer. It's a great lens to have in your bag as a companion to the 24-105L for low light situations. Especially as the R5 has IBIS now. Thanks for the great review!

      What’s the 24-105 like compared to the 24-70 f4 for video? Can’t decide which to get and I can’t rent in my area. Would you recommend one over the other? The extra reach seems handy but not sure on which has better rendering and focus breathing.

    I have his lens and everything you said is true... it is better than previous models, but that manual focus is a bit complicated and annoying. In general is not a bad lens, and maybe I will stick with this until Canon releases a RF 50 1.4. Hope you can make a review of RF 16 2.8 STM, because I plan to buy that lens too.

    Dear Mr. D. Abbott
    I always read your reviews on photographic equipment with great interest. A number of your recommendations influenced the choice of lenses for my Canon 5D,3 and fully justified themselves. Thank you.
    In anticipation of a mirrorless camera like R6, but with a higher resolution of the matrix, I purchased a Canon RP with an adapter for EF optics as an experiment and I perfectly use the entire fleet of my optics, and these are Canons L: 24-105, 16-35, 70-200 (2 ), as well as Tamron 100-400 and Sigma 1.4, 85.
    I am very pleased with the choice of Canon RP for the photo, in almost all respects. Maybe, compared to the Canon 5D, 3 matrix, the tones of the RP are colder and there is no such velvety to which I am used to, but the latest versions of Lightroom give me additional creative opportunities when processing RAV files.
    At present, I want to remember the youth of the 60s and later, when I shot at 50mm (FED, Practice) and purchased a Canon 50, 1.8 STM. Having studied a sufficient number of sources on this topic, including your reports, I practically did not notice the difference between the Canon ER 50, 1.8 STM and its predecessor Canon EF 50, 1.8 STM. The question of the cost of such a level for these lenses is not on my agenda, the point is the convenience of working with the camera and enjoying shooting, not for making money. If possible, please provide your advice.
    Many thanks,
    Oleg Smirnov

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Oleg, I see little reason to buy the EF version if you plan to exclusively use it on a mirrorless body. The RF version has a few advantages.

    RF lenses tend to vignette excessively when focusing closely - such as a chart on a wall. But at normal photography distances, the vignette isn't nearly as bad. This was extremely noticable with the RF 24-70 and this RF 50mm f/1.8. I'm not getting 4+ stops of vignette on any of my photos with those lenses, but when I shoot a wall up close I see it on both. The EF 16-35 f/2.8 III, on the other hand, has vignette all the time and you notice it. I think that lens has a a T-stop of like f/5.6 in reality! Haha

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There could be some truth to that, though I definitely saw some serious vignette in field use, too.

    Nikon's approach to f/1.8 50mm is entirely different, their lens cost three times as much while offering overall better performance, which makes me wonder if Canon brings us a refreshed f/1.4 optic at the price of the Z lens.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's entirely possible.

      I think they will eventually produce a 50mm/f1.4 IS lens at the $500 mark about the same size as the 35mm/f1.8, but think at the moment it's way down the list of prioritys.

    Minus 20°C (-4°F') and you're not even wearing a neck cowl. Respect! 🖖🏾 I've been going back and forth between the 50 F/1.8 and the 35 F/1.8. Sounds like the former is the better buy, going just by your reviews anyway.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL - you get used to the cold around here. Which lens is better depends on your needs, but yes, I think the RF 50mm F1.8 does represent a better value on a basic level.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    I have the EF 50 mm 1.2. It's an amazing lens; however, I have to use the adapter. My question is: keep the 50 I have or sell it and invest in the lower end RF 1.8? I would love the RF 1.2 but am also eyeing another RF and can't do both.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I would use the adapter. It's a more special lens that the cheaper F1.8 lens cannot match.

  • @staLkerhu
    @staLkerhu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Dustin!
    A 50mm lens might join my gear in the future, but this is a really big "MAYBE" for me. The problem is Sony and Nikon have good budget 50mm options, while Canon options are pretty poor. Maybe this RF 50mm f/1.8 would be OK for hobby level, but let's just say I'm not impressed. How good is the Samyang 50mm F/1.4 AS IF UMC compared to this lens? It is a 1.4 lens, seems sharper and much lower vignetting wide open.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you okay with MF? I don't think it is sharper, but definitely lower vignette.

  • @tstolt123

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      That question is too broad to really answer. Better in what way, specifically?

    • @tstolt123
      @tstolt123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Does it perform better? Is if sharper in the corners? Is focusing speed with an STM comprable or better than the old USM motor? Basically are the improvements made to the RF f1.8 enough to make it a better buy than paying the extra $100 for the ancient f1.4 USM.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not necessarily sharper in the corners at larger apertures. The focus speed with STM is a bit faster than the old USM, and definitely quieter. The fact that it is a native RF lens makes me more inclined to purchase it above all, though.

      There are some settings to make it behave more like a real MF ring, it depends on the AF mode. The actual focus ring on the 100-500 is disabled by default most of the time due to this. I hope Canon adds additional settings for this.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI In Italy we call this kinda lens "THE BOTTOM OF THE BEER BOTTLE".
      It is popular? Of course it is. I have it too. It is popular not because it has a good quality but because we can not afford to buy the F/1.2. Since it is in the same category of the "Nifty Fifty" EF F/1.8 i am expecting to pay exactly the same price for it (around 100€) but i paid for it 240€. That is two and a half times more. There's no way its quality is worth a 140% price increase. And to make it even worse, they got rid of the AF/MF switch which has always been there even on the "Nifty Fifty" EF F/1.8. Now i have to go 10 times a day inside the menus to swap between AF/MF. Really well done Canon! Really well done! A LENS THAT I CAN NOT SWITCH BETWEEN AF/MF IS NOT A LENS.
