I had and have strats and I had and have Gibsons solid/hollow: for my ears red houes was recorded with a strat.
At about 11 years old, my parents allowed me to order a "hits" album from television. The ad played the Beatles Nowhere Man, Associations, Along Comes Mary and other songs I wanted to have. The album had a song Red House by Jimi Hendrix. Never knew of it before. I wore the grooves out of those 3 minutes of wax. I still get the same old smoke-filled bar, women w/big hips and lace and men in hats downing whisky in shots VIBE, every time I hear it.
Awesome experience 🤩 Thanks for sharing ✌️🎸✌️
Stratocaster definitely, no semi-acoustic in the middle position.
Nice episode.👌
Thanks ✌️☮️✌️
Definitely the strat with what sounds to me like an analog delay creating an almost chorus type of effect
Hendrix used the Stratocaster, it is still burning in my memory from over 50 years ago....
Whoa, that diary page! Is it really what it sounds like? They were making a plaster cast of...???
The first time I heard Red House from Are You Experienced that guitar tone inmediatly called my attention blowing my mind for something I was not expecting: a so characteristic and intense Gibson Les Paul tone ! So I stopped the music and searched in the web. I could not confirm that it was a Les Paul as I thought, but it was a Gibson with two humbuckers whose model is still a matter of debate. Not for nothing was it the only song Jimi played live with SG or Les Paul. Jimi was a tone chaser and he never stopped using all sort of gear, not short minding that to any brand of guitar, pedal, amp, nor speaker. He dont needed a brand to give him identity nor security.
Thanks for sharing your experience ✌️🎸✌️
Strat definitely.
Nice video ! Strat all the way !
Thanks a lot ✌️☮️✌️
The strat sounds way closer to my ears 😊
Thanks for sharing. I also feel the tone more in the Strat than in the semi ✌️🎸✌️
The EP booster is an amazing pedal. It makes everything sound so much better. Put it before a Uni-Vibe and it makes it throb like crazy. Awesome video as usual!
Thanks for your feedback. It’s definitely a good pedal to get that nice touch and compression you hear on some of Jimi’s recordings ✌️🎸✌️
Absolutely fantastic have a wonderful day ❤😊
Thanks a lot my friend ✌️🎸
Yeh, strat for me as well
Thanks for sharing my friend ✌️☮️✌️
I remember reading about a Hofner that needed tape to hold the pickups or something like that (it was in disrepair somehow). That being said it doesn’t sound like both pickups to me as that has the quack as you pointed out. To me it sounds like just the neck pickup. Also that tape delay is so crucial to the sound on the recording that its hard to hear the true tone of the guitar without it. As always thanks for the deep dive to a very interesting question!
Thanks. That tape delay you are talking about is only used on the Smash Hits version, where we also clearly hear a Strat. On the first album recording there’s no delay! You can hear that in the very first note that Jimi plays with his thumb to give the band a starting signal, as they recorded live 👍 We hear an approx 20ms delay which is only natural studio reflection - of course I have taken that into account 😉 I’ve tried the neck on the ES too and tweaked a bit with no result close to the recording. It’s of course only my assumption, but I think Jimi was pretty straightforward on using the middle position for humbucking guitars. I’ve rewatched tons of minutes of videos and it seems a sure thing ✌️🎸✌️☮️
@@MikelBluni Ahh. Will need to explore the AYE version again. I thought there was tape on that one too. It seems the Smash Hits version is forever etched into my head as that was the first Hendrix album i bought back in the early 90s. Also I think the US and UK versions of AYE were different and had the different versions of Red House
@@jonathanlok643 The Smash Hits version is what I think of first when talking Red House 👍🎸 I think there was no Red House on the AYE US version!!! It was only on the UK version as it represented something the UK people were still new to and the US people heard every day 🎸🔥☮️
@@MikelBluni Yeah no Red House in the original US version but the Smash Hits version was put in later ones
Is it possible they were single coil pickups on the Hofner? Is there any photographic evidence/documentation on that guitar? Could it have been a hollowbody (like an archtop or other acoustic instrument) with a pickup taped to it? Also I’ve read that the amp used was a Fender Twin. Not sure if that has been corroborated.
Have you got any insights on what Jimi did to get the castles made of sand tone? It's such a difficult one to pinpoint, its like bold as love but sharper with more fuzzy overtones.
The key to that sound is the Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz and rolled back volume on the guitar ✌️ Check my channel for a video called “Fuzzy Clean Tones” where you can hear the tone you’re looking for 👍☮️👍🎸
@@MikelBluni Yeah that seems to be the most common answer, i'll have to buy an axis fuzz one day. But there's just something about that tone that sounds different to all others he's done.
@@NaturalIntensity69 Again, what you describe lays in the tone characteristic of the Axis Fuzz. You can’t really compare it to other Fuzzes. It was the reason why Jimi stayed in the lower to mid gain register, because here it is stellar 🤩🎸
In this apples and oranges comparison, I can say I like your strat tone the most.
Hofners had single coil pickups, not humbuckers in the '60s on their thinlines. And they were fully hollow no centre block. They would sound thin but not like a strat, they don't generate the upper harmonics.
Strat
Hofner pickups of the sixties are very, very different sounding than any modern humbucker. The are low volume, toppy and unique.
BTW this is based on my 64 Committee, not internet hearsay.
Good point - interesting ✌️
So clearly a strat! Purple Haze, Fire and others... harder, but not Red House. Strat... all the way! Nice work MB
Thanks for sharing your guess ✌️🎸 It definitely feels like the Strat is what he used 🎸
Wow - you hung out with Mitch and Noel !
Yeah, I was a lucky dude ✌️☮️✌️
Definitely a Strat, no question. As far as bass goes, and I'm not positive if Noel used one on the studio takes, but I recall Alexis Korner during the BBC sessions speak of a rare 8 string bass that Noel was going to use for the playing of Red House during that scene
Thanks for sharing, very interesting. The bass you were talking about was given to Noel after the recording of AYE. It has been used on Spanish Castle Magic. I assume he tried stuff for the BBC sessions ✌️🎸✌️
I’ve read somewhere that it was his Les Paul black beauty?
It was a 1956 LP Custom and due to my knowledge he received it after AYE around 1968 ✌️🎸
It's a Strat folks! 🙄
Yeah ✌️☮️🎸
It was a Flying V.
I believe you're right. The pickup at the beginning when he turns volume up sounds like a humbucker. I don't hear a strat on it. See you in the nxt world and do be late.
I wish I would of videotaped a lot of stuff from the 80’s and 90’s
Which stuff do you think about? ✌️☮️✌️
Great video, sounds like a Strat but ‘ Who Knows ‘ … see what I did there !!!
Thanks a lot for your words ✌️☮️✌️ The Strat sound sooo convincing 🎸🔥
100% a strat
You can hear that the sound of Red House comes from a Stratocaster, but who knows, maybe the solo is played with a semi-acoustic, but I don't really support that theory
Thanks for your feedback ✌️We‘ll never know exactly, but it’s okay ✌️☮️🎸
Strat.
The tone is mostly the TUBE Echoplex + fender 1964 pickups were overwound hot + middle pickup position + with middle pickup tone rolled down some using a Marshall SuperBass amplifier to get that extra FAT THICK tone + Hendrix CHOKED picking technique holding the guitar pick CHOKED hitting the guitar strings 19 fret to 21 fret area picking around that area. Try this out but you really need the TUBE echoplex its Hendrix main tone for all his albums using it as a preamp plus his choked picking technique how he holds the guitar pick. You can take a spare pickup and STACK the coils to get a fatter thicker sound which is like the new seymour duncan Hot Chicken pickups are voiced somewhat like Hendrix 1964 pickups very hot and dark sounding
Thanks for your feedback, Wayne. I intentionally grabbed this very Strat as it has that fatter tone. Adding the EP Booster really did some little magic ✌️☮️✌️ Maybe one day I’ll have an Echoplex…who knows. So far you’ll hopefully enjoy my best approximation ☮️🎸
@@MikelBluni Listen to the Little Miss Lover guitar solo its an octavia pedal but Hendrix is choke picking technique playing around the 21fret to 18 fret. Hendrix didn't pick around the guitar pickups he picked on the guitar neck it makes the octavia and wah pedal react differently. Really listen to the wah pedal on all hendrix albums because he is picking around end of the guitar neck area neck picking over the pickups because it makes the wah pedal react differently. That is why most pedal can't get hendrix octavia tones like One Rainy Wish also picks on the guitar neck area. Hendrix learned this from Frank Zappa. Try it to make a video lesson about it.
@@MikelBluni The new seymour duncan Hot Chicken strat pickups really nails those Hendrix chicken picking tones like on Wait Unitl Tomorrow, intro to castle made out of sand, etc. Those Hot Chicken pickups are voiced to have that Notch that hendrix was going for that has these harmonics you can't get with normal stock strat pickups. The lead guitar line in Hendrix song Freedom that is in the verses has those Notch harmonics
.........could it be Noel's tele he used to record purple haze?
Good point, but I’m sure he used the Tele for Purple Haze only ✌️☮️✌️
@@MikelBluni .......listen to Led Zeppelin ......I can't quit you baby........Page is playing a tele......it sound really close to Red House tone.....also listen to.....Muddy.....Beck ..... Bloomfield tele sound ........Red House guitar tone sound really close .......during most of those sessions Jimi white strat was in a repair shop......they already booked studio recording time
@@siriusra2692 Thanks for the impulse ✌️ This might become a second video ✅
@@MikelBluni . Kool 👍🏾
I would say you got it straight from the horses mouth.
Didn’t know that saying 😊 Nice ✌️🎸
@@MikelBluniyes my friend, it means you got the information from the source. Great videos. I enjoy them very much.
