  • Drop Seoi is a cool little variation of Seoi Nage...whether that's the traditional Seoi Nage (commonly known as Morote Seoi Nage these days) or Ippon Seoi Nage.
This is a throw, I have used as an -81, -90 and -100kg fighter to a lot of success in both randori and competition.
As a 6ft2 (188cm) individual, I think I often shock people when I drop underneath them and catch them off guard.
Both Isaac and myself go through our personal preferences and how to Drop down low.

THIS is why yours is my favorite Judo channel; It's nice to be taught techniques suited to myself by someone of a similar size. I always liked this throw, but something was always off, mainly the depth of entry, I think. I learned early on that I prefer dropping to one knee, but my coach warned of uke possibly pushing into me and hurting the knee that's up, but if I drop more sideways like you show here rather than straight on, that problem seems to be avoided. Thanks so much, David.

Thats great to hear, thank you. Yeah, the sideways knee position is a huge help with the mechanics of the throw and also protecting the knees, whether you're dropping on one or two. I hope this video helps you have some success with Drop Seoi!!

    Great video David, as usual!
(Even though he is not tall, Shohei Ono had a beautiful left Eri Seoi Nage. Go watch his fight against Van Tichelt in the 2016 Olympics.)

Glad to find your channel from this video - I’m 6’3 100kg+ and just started Judo for New Years, I competed in a tournament this past weekend after only training 3 weeks. Lost both my matches, still got 3rd place but Im just glad I took the chance. Judo has been way more difficult than jiu jitsu as a tall player because its hard to learn techniques from people who are almost always half a foot shorter than I am and dont have long arms or need to squat as low as me to get underneath them to throw.

Awesome work on the competition...takes a lot of courage to step out onto the mat, especially after only 3 weeks of learning!! I hope you stick at it and I hope my videos help give some perspective on Judo for the taller individuals like us!!
