Beautiful video! I’m prepping for my first and maybe only trip to Australia from Canada. Thanks for passing on your shared knowledge and sustainable lifestyle. You’ve made everything yourself from the earth. Can’t be more genuine than that! Thanks.
I Love his sense of life and how we should be living. I am so glad i found him as i am sure i can learn a lot from him and eventually get out of this messed up idea of a world we live in.
Thank you for putting this video on youtube it is refreshing to catch the stream of consciousness. The skills he teaches are important to survival esp the plant lore but what I found remarkable was the story telling. He conveyed some "truth" of his experiences. This is our most valuable legacy. Natural living at its best!!
I absolutely loved this and thoroughly enjoyed listening to and watching Koa speak. Like Davilia7 I could listen to Koa for ages. His video was very easy to understand and didn't confuse me, whereas a lot of other videos on bush tucker confuse me. He just made it so simple to understand and voila, I feel more confident that I will be able to go through the bush now and at least recognise what plants are what from this list and know a bit about them. Would really love to see him make things like mats, baskets, etc and show us how. But I don't even know if he is still making videos as this was in 2006 I see .. and now it is 2018. Thanks so much Koa for sharing your wealth of information with me/others. I am looking forward to the next video in the series.
You are one experienced, knowledgeable and very likeable man. I particularly liked your up brining with your grandparents. Thank you for sharing your experiences with me. Id love to come meet you and spend a few nights hanging out talking with you, your energy is very attracting to me, learning from you is a gift. Thank you my friend I truly admire you
Great vidio mate. I'm 30yrs & on the fall of the fourth blood moon in 2015 I plan on living in the bush with only the cloths on my back, maybe even sooner after watching you. Guess you could say I'm not happy, tired of living by the industrial worlds rules' yes I want to be free! Like you said its the fear that's the hardest & I haven't even gone yet. I just have to let myself go. Once again thanks you've given me the inspiration to go ahead with the plan.. If you could get back to me it would be nice. I'm going to start my bush life up in the Dayntree rainforest tropical north Qld. As I've never done anything like this, I think it would be wise to start their near the ocean so that I have seafood as a means of food as well.
same with me and some people that are gonne travel with me were planning to travel allot learn allot gain alllot of wisdome and then go off grid make a sustainable family of people that think alike were from the Netherlands
See some people try to go off the grid with no or little experience and expect to live such a life If you truly wanted to do it learn as much as you can about the area you wanted to go
Sorry, I should also add that this is a great video. The coverage of the non-native plants was very helpful. I've spent a good part of my life in the scrub and I still learn something new from other people.
47:10 The reason for a pressure bandage in the case of snakebite is to reduce the action of the lymph glands. The venom from snakebite of Australian venomous snakes acts through the lymph nodes as the fangs generally can't penetrate deep enough to reach blood vessels. Yes, there is some capillary venom carriage, but the lymphatics do most of the work. A pressure bandage should be rolled onto the limb very firmly to along the entire length of the limb, then try to remain immobile and calm. I've dealt with snakebite before, and if you follow the right procedure you'll end up still alive the next day.
totaly agree with the fact that it doesn't mean you inform yourself on a subject matter that you know or even understand what the subject actualy is without trying out for yourself.
thank you so much mate learning stuff like this i think is essential and kids don't know how to survive anymore ,chips and video games ...makes zombies and couch potato,s
Dude u spooked me when U ate the night shade but like U said U dont know until U experience it ill to the edibility test on it next time I'm out bush these holidays
Hi. Me and my partner are leaving Melbourne in a week . One bag each . Some can food . Very little knowledge on how to survive. But we are leaving. . There's nothing here for us. Videos like this help confirm. We can make it.
A great peaceful man with an abundance of knowledge about the Australian bush right here. How do we collaborate? Australian Survivalism is onboard with sharing this knowledge. Find us on Facebook and TH-cam.
thx for pointing that out hopefully people read your comment as I'm not in a position to edit this video now as i'm overseas , a re edit would be preferable
Could listen to Koa for ages, great man who really makes you think, and very knowledgeable. One criticism, don't know if you should show him eating Blackberry nightshade (Solanum Nigrum) and have "Deadly nightshade" (Atropa Belladonna) up on the screen. Blackberry Nightshade is from the Nightshade family the same as tomatoes are, but its not "Deadly nightshade" which was the favoured poison of assassins in parts of Europe for ages. Would hate to think some kid somewhere in the world where Deadly nightshade is common, would come across this video and decide that he can eat those very similar looking berries!
+Davilia7 yeah your absolutley right even though unlikely to come across atropa belladona in the wild eating the seeds will send you into a week long demonic mania
He has a native American background (on one side of his family) but came to Oz as he feels that the earth is heading for bad times and the Southern Hemisphere will probably be a little safer of a place to be when those times arrive.
+Davilia7 the deadline for those bad times to happen was in 2003 tho. ("within 30 years" from the vision he got when he was 23 years old, and this film was made in 2006 when he was 56 years old) i was a bit confused by that story lol. He essentially tells us about a failed prophesy he had, without actually acknowledging that it has clearly failed.
+roidroid His vision has failed to materialize but his main points are valid enough. This era of capitalism in overdrive where short term profits take precedence over everything else, where just about everything is made to fall apart as soon as possible, where billions are rising out of poverty and demanding electricity, cars and the disposable life that we in the developed countries have been living for some time is certainly not sustainable. Sooner or later it has to fail in some way or another. If we were all to take a step backwards, we’d be doing our kids a favour, but of course it isn’t going tohappen - maybe it will be them that gets to see at least some of his vision materialize. All that aside, He certainly has some skills and knowledge on the bush that I wouldn't mind some of.
Does anyone know, want to share or point me in the right direction for hammock use in Australia? I like the idea of a hammock and seeing as most states don't drop below zero, disease and infection due to convection are minimal in my opinion. Am I on the right path here? Also great information here so far, very pleased to see that this is pretty recent too
Here is a tip for those visiting the Aussie Bush, be they locals or overseas. Australia is not Google Maps. all those blue lakes are salt pans not vast freshwaer lakes or wet lakes of any kind They are all ancient lakes, why Googe colors them blue as in water lets go for a swim is a mystery.. That mistake has killed more then theo odd tourist, mainly Japanese. When it is hot, you will die in a day without water. If you are the type of person to get lost or not take enough water you will not have survival gear. So please take an organised tour, you will still see plenty. If you get lost on one of those tours, sit down and help will come in a few hours. If you are proper lost, sit down, set fire to everythng in sight. If that doesnt bring a response, youll never be found.
i love this guy because he is right and thanks god still living like this people in the earth that's right thing save and still save our life god because he doing right :(
This was filmed in FNQ, the tablelands area pretty sure, near Cairns. Koa lived on our land for a while growing up and he showed me everything I could eat surrounding our propriety which I haven’t forgotten since and still see everywhere when camping all over FNQ
Koa mentions the Cordyline but doesn't say which one. Does anyone know which one he means. ("Stricta", "Petiolaris", "Canniifloria" all natives, all look like the plant he shows) The name "Happy Plant" can also be applied to the Draceana sp which is poisonous I am told. Love this video and the man himself, he is living the dream.
burrumgirl1 I am unsure which Cordyline as well. Time to buy a bush tucker book to hopefully confirm. If it's not in there, there are sure to be plenty other tucker to research ;)
Cool video. tho i cataloged some of the weird or inaccurate stuff: 30:20 When he was 23 years old, he saw a prophesy that the northern hemisphere would be underwater and on fire within the next 30 years. That would have been 2003. At time of filming he was 56 years old. Sooo, even in 2006 while he was telling this story to the camera, the deadline was already 3 years ago. His "There's only 2 reasons people die from snakebite" bit was ridiculous. 44:04 "it's coz people are overeating protein." 47:35 "The aboriginals never died from snakebites.... You just stop for 3 days, when you get bit you just stop." 53:00 "in primitive societies they didn't have cancer" Nah mate there is preserved evidence of cancer in the fossils of ancient humans, neanderthals, and in prehistoric dinosaur fossils. Primitive societies absolutely got cancer.
A death adder will sit and bite you..But the worse snake in the country is the Taipan... It will hear you hitting the ground, chase you down & bite you numerous times and not dry bites either... Overall his advice seemed good though...
I've always considered doing this, but does anyone have information on where to set up? I would suspect if I went 'off the grid' some authority may find me and tell me some beauraucratic garbage about needing a licence or land ownership to be there.

Most intriguing sir. Enjoyed this lecture very much. Society really sucks. Right now we are dealing with progressive species called a Donald, Hillary, Trump, Clinton reverse evolution.
they are merely "symbols" to create desired effect for change. No one is much onboard with running our sacred Earth ship into the ground for a bunch of hooligans. - They are doing their "part" to make the once appeased "masses" very UN-restful -creating a wakeup call and ability to remember our relationship to nature.
ever heard of Jesus? he is God and you might be mixing up him with earth/nature. Jesus said we should love one another and he is who made earth and the heavens. since he made everything he deserve the glory and not a creation he made. don't be fooled by nature giving you things to survive, instead see how God almighty uses his word to bring everything into being.
+Anil Singh You need to read Genesis again. God gave every seed bearing plant to us for food and medicine. IF you love God... you'll love his creation too. That's how it works.... You can't love the creator and dismiss his creation, because guess what... you're his creation too....
Robert Parrelli that's true i didn't say i don't love his creation but i don't love them to the point of worship like what some people today do. they idolize created things like the sun/moon/nature like for example in hinduism they have so many gods. we should give thanks to God the things around us. im thankful for the people who teach us to live off the land and those who discover medicines but i'm thankful to God for giving them the knowledge.
And you have every right to your perspective, and I also apologize if I sounded abrupt. I wasn't attempting to criticize, just merely point out a crucial point in the book of Genesis.
I love this guy! Brilliant information! 'Don't have any fear! Have trust!' Brilliant man, beautifully presented.
awesome. so happy to have come across this docco. In todays world a man like this is as rare as hens teeth.. This is a true, real man. Thank you.
I'd love to spend a week out in the bush with this guy

I Love his sense of life and how we should be living. I am so glad i found him as i am sure i can learn a lot from him and eventually get out of this messed up idea of a world we live in.
I appreciate your message and instruction. I started eating those things as a six year old growing up in the country.
Thanks so much guys! This was fun to watch and it gives us a lot to consider, cheers Dan

Must be a plant proof fence at Cooktown
Where I live in QLD none of these things in the bush , this is more of a lush tropical bush.

Word of caution, not all acacia are edible. There is one wattle which is very poisonous which is (Acacia georginae) and I would not recommend eating .
Great video though, thanks heaps!
Is this on the York Peninsula?
+h82bu223 Thanks! Good to know.
In almost every valley you can find water, even if you have to dig for it. In pools of still water, look for life in it, rigglers, no life don't drink it
also if worse comes to worse and the pool of water you find is dirty and no life in it, dig a hole a foot away from it, the water that rises here will be filtered by the sand and rock, you can also filter it through your shirt again.
very nice ^_^
6,30min in is were it gets good
Oh yeah yeah
Where is he? he says 'up to cook town' but I have no idea where he really is
Probably Central coast or Northern NSW, that's where most of the hippies are.
this is all filmed in northern nsw near mount warning
Lived with aboriginals all my life and trust me snake bite was one of the biggest killers and the remedy was to soak in water and rub area with smooth stone ....if you sit there and do nothing you could surely die

Made a mistake identifying wandering Jew, it's actually Commelina Cyanea you have in the video, it's similar but it's a native.
