    Listen to this musical conversation between two great reed players. One of those magic moments in jazz captured on Frenchman Street in New Orleans during French Quarter Festival week 2016.

    The Limey playwright Alan Plater described jazz improvisation as an "exchange of compliments, not a clash of egos", these two brilliant musicians personify great jazz. And the rest of the band do a wonderful job too.

    Definitely a magic moment. It's a truly stunning virtuoso performance. This is especially evident last two minutes of trading and then sharing, the lead. High-level virtuosity. Genius, really. A brilliant performance by some of the best musicians working today. It's here now; and preserved for the future. Well done. Thank you.

    Absolutely amazing. After setting Chloe tasks for several trades, James acknowledges her skill, and she begins assigning responses, which greatly amuses and pleases him. Both are unbelievable musicians. I've never heard her this good on sax before. And James is always wonderful.

      You are spot on with your assessment. This was just after Chloe moved to New Orleans and I believe it was her first time playing with Shotgun and James. I think this was a little challenge by James to see if Chloe was up to it. I would say she more than met the challenge and then threw it right back at James! There are not enough superlatives in my vocabulary to describe how great this is.

    James Sterling, this kind of moment is what makes music, jazz in particular, so valuable. Chloe and James demonstrate clearly what jazz, democracy, and humanity can be. Two people listening to each other, ready to compromise and cooperate in order to make something magnitudes more special than either could create alone. It speaks volumes that you and everyone else present knew exactly how precious the moment was, as it was happening. Like Mikie, I have watched this hundreds of times. It is that spectacular!

      Indeed Richard, this was my favorite moment ever on Frenchmen Street and one of the highlights of my long life. The band took a break after this song and we talked with them outside The Cat. They realized it was special performance also. Pops Coffee (who was standing next to me) and I were ecstatic and effusive in our praise.

    I'm happy to see from the comments that the video captured this special moment. I am not a musician, just a jazz fan, but I can truthfully say that was one of the most special moments in my life! And to think that Chloe just moved to N.O. this month and this was her first gig ever with the Shotgun Jazz Band. The talent of these two musicians is awe inspiring. When I posted the video I had to edit out the applause because all you can hear is me hollering out how fantastic it was! Ivan was there and he felt the same as I did, which validated my opinion (to myself).
    And a special thanks to Marla and John Dixon for asking Chloe to sit in with them this day and for hiring James Evans.

    NOW you all know why the C-Melody sax was "It" in the 1920's. The flexibility of an alto crossed with the power of a tenor, what a beast! And you get to hear it on modern recording equipment.

    • @louisanatrella2393
      @louisanatrella2393 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I never knew why players like James and Craig played the C melody, instead of the tenor.

    • @howiesmith1504
      @howiesmith1504 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The C-melody was popular in the 1920s because it was a C instrument, so amateur musicians could read and play the melody line directly off the sheet music's vocal, violin or top piano line without transposing, in musical get-togethers of family and friends around a piano. Yet professional musicians did take it up; among them Frank Trumbauer of course, Stump Evans on the latter King Oliver Gennett date, and the inexplicably overlooked Jack Pettis playing those beautiful bluesy counterlines on the 1922 and full-band 1923 New Orleans Rhythm Kings records.

    Everytime I listen to this piece I stand astonished by the so great perfection of these interpreters, the way they exchange each other without any imperfection; James, that probably is not much big cause makes me think that is not plaing an alto considering the dimension of it, so speedy and fanciful and Chloe so linear and incredibly musical , not second the mastery of, I think is, a C Melody sax. This all remind me to the duet of Louis and Sidney in "Everibody loves my baby" with the due respect.

    The language of MUSIC and IMPROVISATION is the same for all countries and for all races and in this period (February/March/April 2020) we have a Corona Virus that also is the same for all countries and for all races. Let us hope after May 2020 we can make MUSIC again and we have this terrible VIRUS behind us. In other words => BYE BYE CORONA VIRUS!

      I talking about sound you can tell an alto from a tenor or soprano

    • @JamesSterling
      @JamesSterling  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'll leave it to the saxophone players to offer a technical explanation, but it is tuned to the key of C rather than the b-flat of a tenor and e-flat of an alto. It is larger than an alto and smaller than a tenor.

      They stopped making the C due to the depression about 75 yrs ago. Looks like Chloe has one from the 1920's. A German company started making the C again just a few yrs in 2012...looks like James has one of those.

    C-Melody saxophones are known for being hard to play in tune. Conn was the best, the straight necks better than the gooseneck. She's playing a modern mouthpiece which helps open up the tone. Amazing playing by all!

      @@jakeallsop4123 Apology accepted. It really was the greatest performance I have heard on Frenchmen Street in the four years I have been going there. And I almost didn't film it. If you notice I didn't start the camera until after the song had already started. Recording in these clubs can be very difficult....jostling crowds, background noise, poor sound systems, poor lighting. I am just an amateur with a cell phone camera doing the best I can to record these performances for posterity.
