Honestly, when my Papa died, my Mom still had six kids living at home and the house was heavily mortgaged, so I never heard just "alone". I think it's a double entendre.
This song hit everyone in the head with it's reality back then. It's one of the most iconic songs ever produced at MOTOWN. Each member took a lead vocal and history was made. Thank You for doing this epic one of a kind song.
One of the reasons a lot of us older people aren't crazy about rap is because this was "Black Music" back in our day. Such incredible writing, performances, and production, and an incredible story to boot. Soul music in the sixties and seventies has never been topped since, as far as I'm concerned. Of course, I can probably say that about "white music," too. So much creativity back in the day. So many brilliant Temptations songs: Just My Imagination is so beautiful and sad. Give it a try. Ball of Confusion by the same writer/producer that did Papa Was a Rolling Stone is incredible. And also Psychedelic Shack. You will LOVE the singing and arrangements on these and other songs.
I'm white and all my white friends LOVED and LOVE the Temptations. It may be "black music" but the Temptations transcended color and at any Temptations/Four Tops concert you see just as many white faces as you do faces of color. Can't top the Tempts and can't tempt the Tops!
This was the first record I ever bought with my own money and it's the first time I have ever heard the long version. Still think it's one of the best and just got better
Thank you for doing the long version because most reactors don't. You have done my two favorite r&b songs in the entire universe back-to-back and I thank you.
I have been told by those in the know, that musicians are obsolete, they cost too much money. We can't be concerned with things like, moving a band and all their equipment around from place to place, paying for meals and lodging, that stuff cuts into our profit margins beside we got AI to do all that and more, for cheaper. That is how the record industry thinks and why music sounds like shit.
It was a smash hit back in the day!!! I had the 45 of that song. They couldn’t play the long version on the radio. Loved the Temptations but this was their MASTERPIECE
That's one of the greatest intros ever. Really great composition, showcases one of the best bands ever. As for intros, you might also listen to "Backstabbers" by the O'Jays.
"The Funk Brothers" were a group of Detroit-based session musicians who performed the backing to most Motown recordings from 1959 until the company moved to Los Angeles in 1972. Its members are considered among the most successful groups of studio musicians in music history. Among their hits are "My Girl", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "Baby Love", " I Was Made to Love Her", "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", "The Tears of a Clown", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and "Heat Wave". Some combination of the members played on each of Motown's 100-plus U.S. R&B number one singles and 50-plus U.S. Pop number ones released from 1961 to 1972.
Jameson is my GOAT bass player, and I will die on that hill. Without his influence and the foundation he laid down, nobody else after him does what they do.
The Temptations and the Motown Sound is the defining sound of R&B and soul music. The distinctive musical style-all tambourines, driving bass lines, and gospel-influenced vocal harmonies, the best songwriters in the business and reality. The Temptations and The Four Tops are American Icons - and musical Giants. I can't imagine a world without Mowtown Music. Now, lay that hat down!
I would say ONE of the defining sounds. In my life-long opinion, it was Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Etta James, Aretha, etc., preceded by people like Ruth Brown, Little Esther Phillips, Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, and lesser-known artists (not lesser-known to me). I love MOTOWN, don't get me wrong, but there would have still been R&B & soul music.
Nothing will ever again top the music or entertainment of the 60s and 70s. We were blessed to be able to listen to this 24/7. So much greatness. The singers, the musicians, the songs, the pure artistry. Thanks for reacting to the Tempts. 👏👏🥰

My Dad played guitar with The Temptations ...A residency in Vegas. I had a conga line of half siblings, step mothers. He never shared his. lifestyle with us. I inherited a guitar pick, a song, and a matchbook from Mexico
Younger generation has really missed out all the great music back in the 60s and 70s I grew up with all this from Young child to adult and I've loved every bit of it no one makes music like this anymore
Hard to believe you hadn't heard this. Not sure if this is the "long version" but it is awesome. Yep this is it. Music back in the day had longer intros. We spent more time "trippin" on the sounds, not analyzing genre, etc. iT WAS THE PSYCHEDELIC 60S/70S that influenced all styles of music. THIS SONG IS A MASTERPIECE.

We heard it all on KDIA & KSOL Oakland/SF Bay Area. Long and short versions, entire albums, (eg. James Brown Live at the Apollo, Motor Town Revues. And can't forget Ray Charles live at Alonzo Herndon Stadium, etc.)
the LATE GREAT Norman Whitfield. from 1968 to the time, he left Motown in 1975. he was that company's TOP Music Producer and Composer...the basic tracks. bass, keyboards, drums, and guitar. was done by Motown's house band/The Funk Brothers. those horns and strings were done by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Honestly I had totally forgotten about this iconic song. A true masterpiece!!! And I'm so glad you chose to play the long version as it was really cropped when radio stations played it. Excellent review by you @JMBoyTV.
It was the 3rd of September! "Forget About it!" 1 of the Greatest song's ever Recorded! Gospel, Rock, Soul, You name it! This song has it all! Great Entro! 🎼🎶
At 69 years old there are some songs that have left their mark on me - I’d Love To Change The World, Comfortably Numb, Stairway To Heaven, Layla, Machine Gun (live Band of Gypsies) and this one to name a few. Thanks for the reaction
Anyone raised with an absentee Father knows every word of this song, I fell in love with motown because of this song and trust me; finding a radio station that played motown in the hills of West Virginia? That was a long row to hoe back in the day 😃
In the 1970’s I got to see The Temptations on a rotating stage shared with The Four Tops. Round and round the stage would slowly spin as each group took turns performing. OMG, how great music was back then does anyone else remember The Front Row Theater?
This song reminds of my grandmother: 10 kids, a husband gone most of the time. He was not always a good man. All of the boys joined the army as quickly as they could to send money home to their mother. By the grace of God those kids turned out well. My grandfather outlived grandma by many years. What I really remember about her was how quiet she was. The truth was sadder than I will ever know. That whole family is gone now. This 68 year old white woman recognizes this story is one that can be true across all races, nationalities snd ages. Fathers: care for the children you bring into this world or this will be your story
I doubt I could be any further away from "a rolling stone", but my wife used the courts to keep me away from our son. I divorced her, because even though I avoided the four times she tried to knife me, and I slept in the spare room with a chair blocking the handle, I realized she only had to get lucky once, I had to be alert every minute I was at home. She decided if I wanted to see our son it could only be by living with her, in her mind it was all or nothing. The court believed her lies because being a soldier meant was a violent man, so they made sure it was nothing. I last saw him on his 2nd birthday, he didn't want to know me when I contacted him on his 18th birthday, I guess 16 years was enough to convince him I was the bad guy. Too many men are deprived of the opportunity to care for their children. Whilst there are still irresponsible father's out there, nobody ever wrote a song about vindictive mother's.
Like listening to it for the first time again, EVERY TIME. Easily the most earworm song of the day and never get tired of it. Imagining the ten times a day on the radio it was played, albeit the radio cut which only goes about 6minutes. Then I bought the single and still have it, though The Greatest Hits album is a brilliant playlist. Thanks for your reaction JM. May I suggest 'Ball Of Confusion' next. Cheers ✌

This is Motown in the late 60s and early 70s. I don't care which genre you listen to in this time period, they all were excellent. From Country to Jazz, it was all excellent, a very creative period. I was a fan of all of it. Now, go listen to Curtis Mayfield
@@sueprator9314 You know the funny think about my generation when it comes to the music, we always thought the music last forever........."ROCK & ROLL WILL NEVER DIE!, Well it died sometimes in 1990s.
My middle daughter was born on the 3rd of September. For 32 years I've sung the 1st line to her but change the last words to ... Because that was the day my sweet baby was born. Thanks for playing the song with no interruptions. Your reviews are pearls. I love this song !!!
First time hearing this iconic classic when it was released... Cruising Pacific Coast Highway in O.C. in a 55 Ford Panel truck with 3 friends. Pioneer stereo 300 watts. 6- 3 way speakers. We all were in a trace listening to this story.
Great reaction!!! One of my favorite Temptations songs 👩🏻🏫👏🏻🥰‼️ My mother died on the 3rd of September too. In 1980. Very sad 😢 day for me. Though she did leave us five kids alone with our abusive father for four years when I was young back in the 1960s. Long story there.
Thank you! What a great song to end the day with! I haven't heard this song in ages. Forgot how great the Temptations were. So many fond memories. Glad you are bringing their music into your life. Enjoy! 💕
I was so, so lucky that this version was the one I heard first time I heard this song. You just don;t hear these kind if intros anymore. You could truly sway and float away to this... then the story comes along to bring you back to reality. Magical! kerk
Up to this point Motown only wanted to do songs about love and happiness. This was one of the first gritty songs about life. And it was one of the Temptations biggest hits! Love it!
"... alone...", hon, not "a loan". DEFINITELY my fave Temps song, & one of my all-time faves, period. It's a pure R&B/soul masterpiece. Thanks for your reaction.
I remember well when this song was released. It blew everyone away. True classic and a gem from Motown. There is a great documentary about the Funk Brothers who were the Motown studio musicians. It’s called “Standing in the Shadows of Motown” and it is well worth the time to watch it. The Motown sound came from the Funk Brothers, but they never really got their full due. Thanks so much for reacting to this. 👏👏🥰
I was able to see The Temptations live about 15 years ago, they were great. Sadly, only one original band member remained by that point, but still so glad I got to see such a classic band in our small hometown theater.
WOW!!! ,I forgot how good this song was. I don't think I ever heard the entire version . I believe they shortened it for the radio, back in the day. What a masterpiece. Enjoyed listening o it so much and your analysis was spot on. Loved it. Gotta play it again!
This song meant a lot to me as a teenager when it first came out, as it described MY Dad, except I never heard about another wife, until he and Mom were divorced. Dad was married 8 tiimes, divorced 7 times. He was a lot of fun!
For me this is perfect music (jazz funk?) of modern times! I was 15 and an AFN Frankfurt & Wolfman Jack fan. Thanks for this video. Harry B from Berlin/Germany! 😎😎😎😎💯
An absolute masterpiece. Love the vocals, the story is great, the music and the song composition is brilliant. And gosh that intro is so great. Daring to have it that long. But the length of the intro is perfect it builds op the tension of what they are about to tell you
I grew up on Old Motown/Soul ! This is music to my ears! I added an "Old Motown/Soul" playlist to my channel. Just off the top of my head I had 200 songs!! 💯✌👍
I once read that the long instrumental intro was not intended for the song but was just the band practicing some spontaneous stuff that was so good they added it to the songs beginning and middle, changing the entire songs sound.... Awesome how that happens sometimes.
Thanks again for doing the full version they put on the album giving proper Respect to this epic song. The radio version chopped out nearly all the instrumental parts. It deserves your full appreciation. Sit back, Pack a Pipe and enjoy the story they tell.
Bravo to you for reacting to this song! I was a young kid when this came out; under 8 years old; I knew the good stuff when I heard it even that young; remember really dancing to the “clapping” parts; I got down! Made me feel like church (In the Bronx; congregation was black, white and Hispanic and was wonderful) I lived for my radio . 56 now and STILL one of my favorites; timeless!!!
I've seen all your comments lol, I am now aware that he said "alone" and not "a loan" 😂
That's what I heard. A LOAN. Either one isn't good on a mother with children.
I've always wondered which it was. Both work, and both are very sad
Honestly, when my Papa died, my Mom still had six kids living at home and the house was heavily mortgaged, so I never heard just "alone". I think it's a double entendre.
@@magnificentfailure2390 That's reasonable. A "double entendre" for YOU.
I guess it can be whatever it means to the listener, BUT, it was written and meant as "alone".

Soul, Rock and Country all were best in the 1970s.
'Ball Of Confusion' remains a stunning work still relevant today.

My daddy was
Papa was a rolling stone (yes he was, yeah)
Wherever he laid his hat was his home)
This is Motown in the late 60s and early 70s. I don't care which genre you listen to in this time period, they all were excellent. From Country to Jazz, it was all excellent, a very creative period. I was a fan of all of it. Now, go listen to Curtis Mayfield
So true! Some younger reactors ask "What is the genre"? LOL...they asked that one time about Bob Dylan. "Ya had to be there, kid"...lol
Damn but I miss those days.
☹
@@sueprator9314 You know the funny think about my generation when it comes to the music, we always thought the music last forever........."ROCK & ROLL WILL NEVER DIE!, Well it died sometimes in 1990s.
Oh yes!
You need to react to them singing BALL OF CONFUSION TO
The Guitar work/technique is exceptionally done. AWESOME sounds from a very skilled player.
One of the all-time best musical creations ❤️‼️☀️
The production on this song is unreal. There are several recorded versions, never heard an instrumental version THIS long, wow, and it's all great.
When you listen to the beginning you can tell how this genre and this song in particular eventually gave birth to Disco
This is now and was when it came out a masterpiece... couldn't have said it anybetter !!!
Hey JM..... This one will get some attention from many who love this incredible piece of music..."OUTSTANDING"-"AMAZING"... Yep
Thank you! What a great song to end the day with! I haven't heard this song in ages. Forgot how great the Temptations were. So many fond memories. Glad you are bringing their music into your life. Enjoy! 💕
Heard this song as a child. One line has always stuck in my head since then - when he died all he left me was alone.
I was so, so lucky that this version was the one I heard first time I heard this song. You just don;t hear these kind if intros anymore. You could truly sway and float away to this... then the story comes along to bring you back to reality. Magical! kerk
I had never heard the long intro, but it was terrific!❤
Thank you for sharing this little masterpiece. You stated it perfectly to how fantastic this one sounds. Magic.
Up to this point Motown only wanted to do songs about love and happiness. This was one of the first gritty songs about life. And it was one of the Temptations biggest hits! Love it!
One of my all-time favorite songs. Gives me chills.
"... alone...", hon, not "a loan". DEFINITELY my fave Temps song, & one of my all-time faves, period. It's a pure R&B/soul masterpiece. Thanks for your reaction.
lol I still always thought it was "alone" but last few yrs started thinking it was a "loan" Lol
@@sueprator9314 Chronic lyricosis, LOL! Like in the CCR song, "Bad Moon Risin' - 'There's a BATHROOM on the right' "! Thanks for your reply!
DEFINITELY "alone".
Great reaction! How have you never heard of the Temptations? Every song they ever sang was a hit! You're adorable ✌️
You are going from 10,000 to 11,000 subs faster then ever before... TOO COOL, I just smile again.
This song is perfect and it is one of my top dozen favorites over all these years.
Is it r&b? Is it funk? Is it soul? Yes. An absolute classic! Great reaction! Well done young man.
WOW!!! ,I forgot how good this song was. I don't think I ever heard the entire version . I believe they shortened it for the radio, back in the day. What a masterpiece. Enjoyed listening o it so much and your analysis was spot on. Loved it. Gotta play it again!
My papa was a rolling stone. 6 kids, 3 mamas, across 🇨🇦. No support, died last year, no $. Lolol
Such a great song!!! Glad to hear it again after so long 😊TEMPTATIONS-My Girl!!
Awesome catalogue.
This song meant a lot to me as a teenager when it first came out, as it described MY Dad, except I never heard about another wife, until he and Mom were divorced. Dad was married 8 tiimes, divorced 7 times. He was a lot of fun!
“… all he left us was alone…” but “a loan” also works!
This song was big and when your head is feeling another way 😅, OMG you wished it never stopped, the way it was ❤❤❤
For me this is perfect music (jazz funk?) of modern times! I was 15 and an AFN Frankfurt & Wolfman Jack fan. Thanks for this video.
Harry B from Berlin/Germany! 😎😎😎😎💯
I had this album . It’s one of the first I owned . This is one of my favorite songs !
So many great songs by the Temptations
Loved that one since the day it was released - I dare anyone to sit through that without moving! Impossible! lol
An absolute masterpiece. Love the vocals, the story is great, the music and the song composition is brilliant. And gosh that intro is so great. Daring to have it that long. But the length of the intro is perfect it builds op the tension of what they are about to tell you
Very iconic - forever song. Masterpiece.
Love The Temptations. Thx. 💜👈🎵
Now this...this is MUSIC!
Love this gift. 🤩💝
This one of my all-time favorites. Because it tells my story. Luv this. ❤
Thanks again for doing the full version they put on the album giving proper Respect to this epic song. The radio version chopped out nearly all the instrumental parts. It deserves your full appreciation. Sit back, Pack a Pipe and enjoy the story they tell.
One of their finest songs
The kind of stuff that made Motown great. I love the streetness and realness of it. The background music. Everything. What a jam!
Glad you liked it, knew you would. Everybody did/does.
A masterpiece that was crying out to the country, “This is what happens when dreams are deferred.” 🙏😊🙏
