Pennsylvania Railfanning, August 1994: Allegheny Tunnel Dud

  • A continuation from my '9-Unit Westbound At Gallitzin' clip, about 30 minutes later. The squall line approaching at the end of that clip moved through quickly, and after the sun came out again the blasting crew wasted no time in setting another charge. A few locals gathered with us in anticipation. I was determined to catch the blast on tape, but the first attempt was a dud. While they reset everything I caught what was for me the old Gallitzin bore's finale as a pair of howling SD60Ms led an SD40-2, an SD50, and a long string of 89' boxcars westbound.
After the train passed I foolishly shut off the camera - the blasting crew quickly made a second attempt at setting off their charge, this time with success, and I completely missed it. I was left with a rather funny transition as the tape cuts back to Horseshoe Curve after an unfulfilled buildup to the tunnel blasting and Dad comments 'I'm real sorry you didn't catch that blast, that was neat!'

There wasn't any ventalation in that smaller tunnel. Luckily Norfolk southerns trains are mutch cleaner.

The then-new SD60Ms sound like vacuums lol

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. They did have a drone to them.

I know! They came from the factory with very soothing sounding engines, when they get older and wear out some of them now scream like jet engines!!

I dont get why they couldn't have ran regular freights or coal trains through that tunnel as well, use all 3, because IIRC the Pitt line is 3 tracks for quite a ways isnt it?

I can't remember did they lower the track in the Portage tunnel I'm guessing they would have had to done something over there too because I've seen double stacks go through it as well.

I'm not sure anything was done during the '90s clearance project, but I'll ask around. I know that the New Portage Tunnel was originally double-tracked, and the work to reduce it to a single-centered track to clear hi-cubes and autoracks was done some time in the early '60s.

Ok, so the SINGLE track to the left is now obolete because of this? " Conrail was increasing clearances to allow doublestack containers on the line" *HELLO!!?? McFly!!??* should of known! Thanks :-D

So whats the story with the tunnel to the right? Renovation? I see in updated videos, that active tunnel dead now, is that the same one?

Why were they building a new tunnel? Just curious.

+Taz The Allegheny Tunnel (the one under construction in the video) was a single-track bore when it was originally completed in 1854. The Gallitzin Tunnel (the active tunnel here) was completed in 1904. The construction seen here was to widen the Allegheny Tunnel to two tracks and increase the clearances to allow the operation of double-stack container trains. Once the construction was completed in 1995, the Gallitzin Tunnel was taken out of service. This trip was the last time I ever saw trains operating through the Gallitzin Tunnel.

They weren’t building a new tunnel, they were widening an old tunnel

As nicely outlined, the tunnel was being widened and increased in height clearance as part of the PA Clearance Project.
