How I fuel my long runs

  • I get asked this question a lot and, seeing as many of you are in half marathon and marathon training mode I thought I'd share with you how I fuel my long runs. What do I use and when do I use it. It's pretty simple but you have to find what works for you. Whether it be what fluid you take on board or what gel your body is ok with, you need to try it in training and not on race day. That's a big part of what the long run is; experimentation.

    Nothing new on race day. Been using the SIS gels and they are great lots of flavours and they keep having discounts on so I stock up. Fruit salad is good

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah we’ve been doing that too. Thought fruit salad would be horrible but as it turns out it reminds me of those sweets we used to eat as kids. So actually they’re not bad 😂

    The longest run I've done to date is 41km, for that I have stopped for a gel/carb drink every 10km, that sounds about right, doesn't it? My first marathon is in 3 weeks.

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like I say in the video I think it kind of depends on you and the speed you run at. 10km gaps would be too much for me when I’m running in a race. I would average a gel every 7-8km which would be about 30ish mins. But it’s very individual so if every 10 works for you then that’s great. Good luck, let me know how it goes 👍🏻

    In a race I assume you don’t use a vest? So how do you drink every 10 min or do you just drink at the fuelling stations? And do you you stop at everyone? Thank you! I love your channel btw and think you and Mary are awesome!

    Is your re-hydration drink a mix of carbs and electrolytes?

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No mine is just electrolyte drink. In the early days I found if I used a carb drink AND gels it cramped my stomach up badly. This combo seems to work for me 👍🏻

  • @northernninjarunner5506
    @northernninjarunner5506 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ben I have the same running vest as you. Question right hand side top pocket has what appears to be 2 pencil holders behind the Velcro pocket. Any idea what you could use them for?
    I went for Salomon soft flasks with the longer tube, you can just drink on the run then.
    I forget to drink as I run with GNR and The Yorkshire Marathon worries about dehydrating. Last years GNR was really hot and I took a bottle from every aid station I passed plus the 2 bottles I had on me and it wasn’t enough was very thirsty by the end of the event.

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe for pencils? 🤦🏻‍♂️😂
      Yeah I’m going to invest in the longer straw type lids so I don’t have to remove them either. I only drink water from aid stations so hopefully Seville and London are stocked up enough 🤔

      It was hard work as was my first run for about 3 weeks but did ok. I’m training for the London marathon and London half in March. Doing it in memory of my dad who passed away in September, so raising money for the hospice he was at. Makes it easier when I think about him as I run
