Wow, I never realized these guys were so aggressive. And also how good they blend in with the sea floor. The ultimate predator. Awesome footage John.

This video is by far the best I've seen about the techniques of flounder fishing. You have captured patterns which I've never before witnessed. Well done, Sir! 🤠

I fish the CT side of long island sound, and after watching how successful the guys with bucktails have been I decided I should invest some time into learning how to properly use them. Very happy I found your channel, and your bucktailing books are on my list.

Fluke are insane and desperately in need of some anger management, they make bluefish looks like candy stripers

Great video John! What would you estimate the length of visibility to be, in the water at the time you took this video? Just curious since here in NC where I fish for flounder, the visibility is limited most of the time and I rarely get a second bite when the lure/bait is pulled from the mouth of a striking flounder. After watching your videos, I believe my experience, with a lack of subsequent strikes by the same fish, is mostly because the fish is unable to pick the lure/bait back up once it has been pulled a short distance from its field of view.
Again, enjoy all your videos and your new book "Fishing for Summer Flounder" is a terrific resource and reference for myself and my wife's obsession with flounder fishing.

did you ever try using peanut bunker as bait. I don't know why but when i use them and i set the hook on the first bite the majority of the time i pull it right out of the flukes mouth and it just leaves those scrape tooth marks on the bait

    Hey John,
I fluke fish eastern long island (mainly shinnecock bay/inlet/ocean) and have fished the area for 20 years with excellent results. However, the past year or two the sea robins have literally infested the entire area. It has literally become damn near impossible to catch fluke. On clear tides i can see 4 or 5 sea robins chasing my bucktail. Have tried tons of spots, baits, jigs, live baits, everything. Have the populations to your knowledge changed?

I agree about 2017 and 2018, but this has been good to me in the bay, and the reef was good last weekend. I'll post the reef trip on Monday. The kayak trips and the shore wading and the dock trips were all Shinnecock. I've been west of the bridge in the yak and east on the other trips.

Flounder are just plain mean and they always look pissed off. I've had a couple that put up a real nice fight, got them up to the kayak, and I could see that they weren't even hooked, just clamped down on the Gulp mullet. They'll even let you get the net right up to them before releasing. They just don't have any quit in them. If they weren't so tasty I'd let 'em go just out of respect.
