Kid N Play brought something unique to the table. They were the fun guys of rap, in an era where there was a niche for that. But as the game moved forward, it left them behind. Still Legends in the game

Can you imagine if they came out today? The dances? Catchy songs? They'd be a hit. We really took them for granted because now everything is murder drill rap and ratchet rap.
@DERRTYCHYBO yeah but considering everyone on Instagram and tik tok(before the ban) would've been trying to do their dance. I think they would've gotten over
They were in a no win situation, they couldn't change up , it would be unbelievable, but they are legends, movies, cartoons, I'm surprised they ain't have a cereal
They were fun to watch and see in the movies. But the changing landscape in hip-hop was so fast in the 90s it was just impossible for a lot of artists to acclimate in the genre.
Kid n play and full force still gets played at all of our family events. I also like to play their music when I’m driving on a long trip. It’s so refreshing to hear music that makes your spirit feel good compared to all the negative music that’s out today. Kid n play will forever be iconic figures for the blk community in my book!
I grew up to Kid N’ Play. I used to watched their cartoon. I love their music so much when I was younger. Great video. I love your channel. Can you do Kut Klose if you haven’t already pls 😊
I bought their first album in 89. I saw their first video DO THIS MY WAY in 88 and when i say the kick step...I was hooked. Back in the late 80's and early 90's we had the luxury of enjoying all genres of hip hop the fun stuff the conscious stuff and the STREET STUFF. And dancing was SYNONYMOUS with rap. And all the different genres used to tour together. Even Tupac used to dance with Digital Underground. The CULTURE changed.
Groups like these guys, Heavy D, Special Ed, Kwame , Kane, LOTNS, TCQ. & plenty others couldn’t get any radio play like that by 94. Corporate America came in & boxed in the artist coming out. After awhile there wasn’t room for anyone but gangster rappers from their capitalistic perspective. I loved when it was room for everyone because it allows people to be themselves & be okay with it. Gangster rap has made a lot of pliable young minds emulate it with dire consequences. They slowly made it East vs West to further weed out artists. Golden Age was a beautiful thing to have lived through .
It was a change in rap culture where artists started rapping more about street life than having a good time. That’s where Kid & Play started to fade off the scene.
90's a unique time. Early 90s was a offshoot of the 80s when hip hop was party and dance music. But NWA and Public Enemy brought on a serious shift in Hip Hop. Then the taste in music started changing hip hop listeners. Ultimately , Kid N Play brand got played out.
House Party , House Party 2 and Class Act are three of the best movies, ever. They had some classic songs and videos as well. Ps House Party 3 was cool too. Pps Peace to Heavy D. He had an amazing run from recording to acting to producing.
These 2 are forever icons in my book. From the artist they put on to movies I can forever watch and never get tired of. Also life wasn’t too bad for them after fam. Play had a baby with our childhood crush Lisa McDowell 😅 and Kid produce jingle beats most famously for The Daily Show I believe. So them royalty checks had to be nice ✊🏾
Want to know what's ironic about all of this: Play was actually more gangsta than a lot of the gangsta rappers that were out at the time. Him and MC Hammer had people fooled with their clean cut image!!!
I'm surprised that you don't talk about their feud with 2 Live Crew or their cartoon on NBC. Yes, they failed to be taken as a more mature hip hop group, but in their 1990 album, they have an interesting song called "Back to Basics" where they already talk about the shift inside hip hop culture losing its innocent sense of peace and fun by turning more violent. They felt that thug rap was inevitable and when they tried to be edgier but failed, they finally broke up. Kid pursued acting, Play works on Christian rap projects.
I used to LOVE them when I was a kid (I'm 47). I was really into music and I really liked all of Hurby Luvbug's artists (them, Salt-N-Pepa, Sweet Tee, Kwame, etc.). I saw them on tour a year or two ago and they still did the classic Kid 'N Play dance.
Kid 'n Play definitely left a lasting mark on the 90s with their unique style and iconic dance moves! Christopher "Kid" Reid and Christopher "Play" Martin brought an infectious energy to hip-hop with their high-top fades, colorful outfits, and, of course, their famous "Kid 'n Play Kickstep" dance. It would say their foot lock kick step moves! They made some fun loving hip hop before gangsta rap took over the waves. Their movies were a big part of their charm. The House Party series, in particular, was a hit. The films combined humor, music, and their signature dance moves to create a unique and entertaining experience. All of the House Party series are classics! My favorite scene from House Party was Kid gets whooped by Pops is definitely a memorable one! Robin Harris, who played Pops, delivered a hilarious and iconic performance. His comedic timing and the way he disciplined Kid added to the charm of the film. I didn’t exactly liked House Party 2, but it wasn’t good as the first one. House Party 3 was definitely funny as Bernie Mac was in it. Another favorite scene from House Party 3 was where Showboat gives them the "toe jam cracker" is unforgettable! Showboat, played by Michael Colyar, brought a lot of humor to the movie.
