  • Happy New Year!!
    In this video we will build a Dinky Diecast Action Kit 1018 made sometime between 1973 and 1978. We shall paint it in WMPTE colours and use some homemade water slide transfers to make a number 11 bus from the longest urban bus route in Europe.

    I remember this kit . It dates back to around 1969-70 and what a nice kit it was along with the others. My mum worked at dinky on binns Road and I remember her saying you had to be quick on the assembly line. The kits came about because they made to many cast units so it was a cheap way to sell them off .

    I enjoyed your take on the bus colours. I am from Wolverhampton and remember the WMPTE colour scheme and the Atlantian buses. I also worked for Visionhire in the 80’s so this was a truly surreal experience for me, thanks!

    Nice custom restoration for the Dinky Kit. I think 295 ready made was Yellow as an all over advertising for Yellow Pages and red and white Kenning vehicle hire. Dinky kits were also Routemaster bus, Dustcart, Ford Escort, single deck AEC bus plus a few others. I seem to think that restorers put too much paint on headlights, just a touch will do, apart from that real nice. A custom box would complete it. Visionhire, Radio Rentals and DER would hire TVs as they were considered expensive and easier when they went wrong to have them repaired or replaced.

    Great video. I have this kit, unbuilt, and was hoping to fit the spun wheels. Not sure about livery choice yet. Kit was $20 on Ebay.

    Wow!! What a blast from the past. I remember these buses and the 2p fare. I seem to remember the 2p fare being around 1984. I went all the way to Pebble Mill from Darlaston for just 4p catching 2 buses. A great restoration and a nostalgic look back in time too. Really enjoyed this video.

    This came out nice.... I think the non stock liberties you took with this kit improved its appearance IMO...

      Thanks Martin I think there is a lot of mileage (groan) in customizing these buses to other companies liveries especial as the kit version is so boring :)

    I stumbled over this vid after going all over YT for other diecast restauration and custom videos, which bring me back to the days of my youth where I'd grab my allowance and the money I made with washing cars, and hit the downtown weekly fleamarket for cheap (aka, chipped paint, and bent axles, but still fairly complete) die-casts.
    After watching I went for ebay and looked those kits up. I agree that most price tags are a joke, but I found a kit like yours here for a mere 20€ (and 10 for shipping), and bought it right away. interestingly enough it has the same decals, but a white upper deck, and a vial with white paint instead of the can like yours. maybe they had the vial only at the beginning of the run? the casting seems to have as many flashings as yours...

    • @diecastrescue3597
      @diecastrescue3597  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes i think Dinky would change the contents and colours probably depending on available stock levels in the factory. All the other kits i have seen have the glass and not a tin i wonder how long they did it for?

    Takes me back to living in Birmingham late 70's - early 80's. Went everywhere on these buses. Not sure that WMPTE had the version with the doors in the mid section but I could be wrong....looks fantastic though.

      Yes at the beginning of the WMPTE in 1969 they had a batch of Buses with Duel door like this and were known as Jumbo buses because of their size.

    Hello. Once you have applied Micro-Set/Sol, try not to touch the decal - it is being softened by the solutions, and can, and will, break. I swear by both solutions, and it's interesting to apply a decal to a very irregular surface, with and without setting solutions. Pricking a decal with a very sharp needle, and adding more solution, makes it conform even closer, and it looks painted on.
    Nice result, though - I always liked it when you could recognize where buses came from by their liveries - not any more, sadly. and happy new year to you.

      @diecastrescue3597  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks the home made transfers are much softer than ones that come with commercial kits you do have to get it right quickly there is not as much wriggle time as a commercial made one

    I understand that back then, they taxed TV use fairly strongly. People would go out of their way to hide TVs if they thought the tax man was coming around. They had guys that had some kind of gear that would allow them to find TV's that were working. It all seemed very odd to us in the US.

    • @robstrains8711
      @robstrains8711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi they had TV Van's for detecting if you was using a TV but they were for show it was a total myth that they could actually detect you it was impossible to detect an individual house back when analog was in use.

    • @tootall5559
      @tootall5559 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robstrains8711 I wondered bout that, how they could detect a receiver. A broadcaster, sure, but a receiver, no way. Big con huh? Why were they taxing TV use anyway? Don't make no sense. tax em when they buy it, but for using it? crazy stuff. tho ehhumm the Brits have always loved to overtax... now we got our own a holes doing it...and giving it to illegal immigrants... well that's another subject.

    • @ged8896
      @ged8896 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tootall5559 They weren't taxing the TV, they were checking whether or not the household had a licence to use the TV. The licence was introduced by the BBC to help fund TV programmes as there was no commercial TV in the early days. We are still required to pay an annual licence fee today, but many people are becoming angry about it as the BBC is increasingly being used as mouthpiece for whoever gives them funding. The BBC has lost its credibility in the UK as it is no longer an unbiased reporter.

    • @tootall5559
      @tootall5559 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ged8896 Sadly they're losing their former sterling credibility here too. I don't get the idea of paying for it by license... and making everyone that has a tv pay it, whether they watch the BBC or not. A TV is mainly just an interface these days anyway. We have what they call public tv here, but it's funded by begging and the largess of donors that have big bucks. I'd be ticked if I had to pay for it, I don't watch it, but then my wife does. Now days, they do have commercial sponsors, it's getting to be pretty much the same as regular tv, except they keep the ads between the shows. There are licenses for cars, whatever, but if you don't use it on the public road, you don't need a license. Mere ownership doesn't require a license. the one thing like that I know you have to license is a juke box, but only when it's for commercial use, not if it's in your home.
