One thing my mom always taught me, if you get a birthday invite and as long as you don't have a prior commitment, you show up because you would feel bad if no one showed up to yours. I have now carried over this rule to my son. Showing up means a lot to people!!

I’m 36 years old and this has been happening for decades now. I know someone that this happened to when we were 12. A few of my teenage birthdays I was by myself as well - and I remember my own 21st birthday party, everybody cancelled. Same happened to my friend, my birthday twin. Her 21st birthday, no one turned up, too. On my 23rd birthday, the guy I was seeing didn’t contact me because he forgot, however the girl he was cheating on me with, had the same date of birth and he remembered her birthday 🤣. That being said; this past year on my birthday, my friend turned up at my front door with a massive balloon, a cake and a massive bunch of flowers and I was not expecting it at all. She has no idea about previous birthdays where I was by myself, so this was not her trying to compensate! It more than made up for those previous birthdays where I was forgotten 😊

This has happened to my husband, my kids, and myself so many times in the past. We would do what we needed to do to invite who we wanted to join and in the end, no one would come. So I had enough of disappointments that I stopped throwing parties. So we just have a birthday party with the immediate family and enjoy our time together. No more disappointments. Just heartbreaking seeing more people go through this. Even with RSVP's - not many people will let the person throwing the party know they aren't coming.

Happened to me in the 4th grade. For the first time I had a birthday party where only classmates were invited instead of my many cousins. It was at a roller skating rink and several other kids were having their birthdays at the same time. They all had lots of kids at their party and my section was empty. Seeing that was too much for me to handle and I broke down and cried. Dad to the rescue. He raced around picking up all my cousins and we had fun. My teacher yelled at all my classmates when we came back to school for not coming and not RSVPing. That was almost 40yrs ago and scared me for life. Till this day I have never had another large birthday party. I only celebrate with immediate family or one or two friends.

This is definitely the parents, if you tell a kid “want to go to a birthday party?” 99% of the time they’ll be excited to go. There was a little girl my daughter made friends with at an outing once, they lived in a city about 30 minutes away from us. They got along so well and the little girl was telling my daughter and I how her parents hardly ever take her anywhere and she would love to spend time with my daughter again, so I got her mom’s number and we invited her to a playdate and my daughter’s birthday party even but the playdate was declined and she RSVPed the birthday party saying the girls dad will take her but was a no show and didn’t respond to messages.

This happened on my first birthday party when I was turning like 9 or 10 years old. We rented a roller rink and slushies and even goodie bags for my entire class including an enormous cake and no one came. The next day I asked why and everyone claimed to be busy. Here’s the twist! My birthdays April 1st 😂I haven’t had a birthday party since and it’s just a family thing now with my grandma and grandpas and myself.

The reason this makes me a little worried is that back when, it was our siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents..., a best friend or 2 & maybe a neighbor kid or 2 who came to our parties when we were young. Sure maybe it did occur that more of our school associates would show up to 1 in our lifetime but mostly no.
Today I'm sad because we rely so much on virtual strangers, people we don't have close bonds with and even those who have these super duper hectic weekend schedules to show up at these parties & events for our kids.
It feels like a set up for them to feel like a reject verses we don't really have close bonds and understandings with these people. We havent created the villages to support one another in these areas for the kids. Alot of us don't live near our siblings and other family like we used to in order to have that built in village.
The other thing is giving the child this heaviness of its so terrible that these people who owe you nothing didn't show up. I don't mean it harshly. I'd rather we have this perfect world where things magically turn out the way we want or imagine but it's just not that way.
It feels like t.v. and media has help set it up for us to plan these things thinking people will just show up because they got an invitation...and because gosh it's my wonderful kid after all.
I hope we move away from this for the kids sake. Even our own sake unless we purposely start building these villages that consciously support this.

Maybe the reason we have a society full of fascists and crazy people is because parents aren’t doing enough to socialize their kids. Its a shame all of these kids had no one show up to their birthday.

How can parents do this too children. Because It's the parents who decide where the children go.

My son has been the only friend on several occasions to show up at other kid’s birthday parties. We try to make every single party we can.

This happened when I was 12. I had just moved to a different school district, but it was only ~20min drive away from my old school. My birthday is at the beginning of the school year and I had no friends at my new school so I invited my friends from my old school. Only one girl said she could make it, but then she flaked the morning of my birthday party. It was devastating, especially since I felt so alone at my new school. I’m well into my twenties now and still haven’t held a birthday celebration ever since.

I remember this happened to me when I was in 3rd grade. My mom made invitations that I could give to my whole 3rd grade class! My party was at a McDonalds but I was like 8 years old so that was the good stuff at the time. Anyway, I was so excited for my party and how much fun I was going to have! But when we got there and waited, nobody had even shown up yet and eventually nobody ever did. I was the most heartbroken 8 year old ever…
but then my mother finds all the invitations in my backpack that I forgot to hand out at school and so it turns out I played myself. I couldn’t believe it! My dad felt bad for me and bought me a ps2 the next day so it was pretty worth nobody showing! 😂

This brings tears to my eyes cause I know what it’s like for no one to show up for your Big day. I’m glad that there still some decent people in the world 🌍 that made these young people happy 😊.

    I'm not crying, you're crying... 🥺
I love that those cops showed up and even the dog was involved. That's rare, given the fact that they're typically not allowed to mingle with people, at least not on the clock.. so awesome! 👮‍♂️🚓

I had a birthday party for my daughter and no one showed up. I found out my "friend" got a hold of all the party guests and told them that I cancelled the party. Needless to say, I am not friends with her anymore.

Inviting the friends from his class is nice and thoughtful. For my son I always invited close friends and family. All his cousins and my friends children. This was more than enough. Never once thought to invite kids from his class. Except the friends I knew were close with him. Of course there's always a few that can't come for other reasons.
I felt bad for those kids where no one showed up at all. That's sad. But wondering why family and close friends children instead of counting on his class to show up? You gotta know the parents. It can't just be random folks. Those parents didn't have a connection to this child so it was easy for them to not show. And some don't come because they might not be able to afford a gift and decide not to show up rather than walk in empty handed. The other's just had no connection.

There's a remedy for this. Bring cupcakes to school and ALL the "friends" can be there to celebrate. That's the old school way of having birthday parties.
If you want a more intimate setting on a non school day...invite ONLY the families you know will show up.
