Flip Wilson's "spin" on this very old joke made it much more funnier and vibrant than those that preceded him. I'm sure Johnny Carson has heard this joke a thousand times around the best comedians but FW hit this one out of the park..
LMBAO!!! I just wanna take the time out to thank the person who posted this video, along with others who take time out of their busy (or non-busy...lol) schedules to post these videos on youtube. I love it. I'm 27 years old, but thanx 2 y'all I get to experience the 50's, 60's, 70's etc.. Along with learning about a lot of African American talent from the past that somehow goes forgotten today. Thanx.
I had this guy's record back in the 70's when LP's were the CD's of their time and this guy was hilarious. I still remember a lot of the jokes from the album!
If anyone's got them, please post the following routines: 1. Princess Geraldine - "Dragon! Dragon! Get your ass out here!" 2. Gardener explaining how the house burned down. (Carson show) You'll see. A couple of the funniest routines you will ever see.
My favourite telling of the joke is the "Discussion in the airplane" version on the record "When you'e in love the whole world is Jewish". Shame its not available on You Tube.
@BradSmithPiano .. It was always customary on the Carson show that a comedian would not join him on the dais until he had made several performances on the show. It was "if you're good enough to be asked back to do your act several times" then you had earned the privilege. I'm not sure what the "magic number" was, but even (later) successful comedians like Steve Martin and Jerry Seinfeld talked about how they had to earn the right to sit with Johnny.
True. This old predated vaudeville joke has been recycled many times over the years. It wasn't the punchline, it was how he updated the joke for his delivery and style. He added the: "No one's gonna bother that kid" part..
Ya know I just don't laugh - like I am laughing now - when I watch comedy that drops the *F* bomb all the time. What does that tell ya? Flip is CLASS all the way!
Good bit, but in those days, Flip and his kind could do their bit, but unless your name was Sammy Davis Jr or Bill Cosby you could sit out on the couch with Johnny.
@imadildoking, actually Flip was only allowed to be a comedian on Mondays and Wednesdays. The rest of the week he worked as a Mohel with Sammy Davis Jr.
i find it weird how at the end of the routine with the bananas some comments think of a black baby.its just an ugly baby people lol,he never did say that.get your mind out of that thought.btw it was hilarious, flip wilson is underrated, and im only 15,but i watch his show on tv one
No, I've never even heard of that show. And I said high school kids (suburban; I know what was going on in th hood) who were still drinking beer, Brass Monkey, etc. Yes, and a lot of businessmen were also into cocaine too.
@LOLseeker101, I don't believe that was Flip's intention. The whole point of the routine was about a woman and her (supposedly) ugly baby, and the conductor's remark at the end was more in line with that subject, and not necessarily a disparaging comment about the baby's racial or ethnic background. Also, I think the conductor's suggestion to move the woman to another coach was not racially motivated, but rather was meant more as an attempt to move her from the uncomfortable situation.
Michelle Johnson Thank You!!! Finally, someone-else who "gets"-it! And, NO, I ain't just tellin' you that in order to "suck-up". Black, White, Green With Yellow Polka-Dots on 'em. It can't be helped! I mean, SOME-babies are just-ugly--even though MOST-of 'em grow outta it! (My-company whilst in the service had a black-Corpsman. When we saw blood-red, the damned-color of his skin was no longer an-issue, for some-strange reason...??) LOTS of other-stories to tell, but I won't write a book! Damned-shame we've forgotten how to learn to "overlook"-such, in times of real-need...
"you don't need to hire a babysitter, no one's gunna bother that kid"
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Man, when you can crack up Johnny Carson, you are one funny guy.
aCarson broke a lot of comedians on his show to a national audience.
Flip Wilson's "spin" on this very old joke made it much more funnier and vibrant than those that preceded him. I'm sure Johnny Carson has heard this joke a thousand times around the best comedians but FW hit this one out of the park..
"more funnier"
One of the greatest comedians that ever lived...
doesn't get enough credit. Flip.
Indeed, two of the greatest, on the same stage!
One of the oldest Carson Tonight Show bits I have ever seen. I love Flip Wilson and this was a well delivered bit. Very Funny.
In my mind, the greatest comedic storyteller that ever lived. One of the greatest comedians that ever lived.
Reading The Story of Flip Wilson. He should be remembered for his contributions to comedy and paving the way for other celebrities.

I've seen this atleast 100 times. I always laugh.
One of the greatest comics of all time!!! No one ever set up a joke like Flip Wilson.
Flip Wilson. He was Hillarious!!!! I remember watching his show as a kid. What a great great comedian.
Wow, absolutely perfect delivery and timing from the great Flip Wilson!
I play this whenever I’m feeling down 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
You know you're a kick ass comic when you can put Carson on the floor, and Flip was definitely in that class!!!
Great delivery, he was a talented comedian!
I love it! Man cracked up so hard, I thought he was gonna hurt himself. Gotta love it!
Johnny didn't see it coming.
How we went from those cool 60's suits to those horrid 70's giant lapel suits, I'll never know.
I was laughing all the way through, hell Seinfeld had an episode with the ugly babe theme.LOL
Flip Wilson was a genius!!
Johnny's reaction at the end is PRICELESS.
I really like this!! Lol. Even tho it was 31 yrs before I was born.... Lol :)
Flip was Grand Marshall of parade in Atl in 1975. He got out of his Benz convertible and did his little step.
The delivery of that joke is perfect. Hilarious joke.
flip almost made johnny fall out of his seat.
My sentiments exactly! I laughted and laughed. I thought exactly the same thing about his delivery.
Man I loved him, got a chance to see him in Vegas as a kid. He's still one of my favorites today.
Seeing Johnny Carson get so tickled is funnier than Flip's act. I miss Flip AND Johnny.
He's totally just sitting there smoking a joint.

The greatest joke I have ever heard.
Johnny's reaction at the end is the best!
I miss you Flip! You made me laugh!
I remember watching his shows when I was a little girl.
Flip died in 1998 at the age of 64.
RIP Flip..from one Jersey City native to another
wow this was before flip wilson had his own show.. definitely a pioneer for black comedians

Just love Flip! What a brilliant person!
I miss Johnny Carson XD His reaction at the end is the best.
He left us too soon!
funny stuff. carson's reaction is priceless.
0:47...like that... lol
The punchline to this is not that funny. However, the way he tells the story is hilarious. That shows just how great of a comedian he was.
True. This old predated vaudeville joke has been recycled many times over the years. It wasn't the punchline, it was how he updated the joke for his delivery and style. He added the: "No one's gonna bother that kid" part..
Actually... I searched 'Ugly Baby' and this video came up haha

Ah, if only I could have been alive while Flip Wilson was still around and the Pennsylvania Railroad was not a distant memory...
Can you imagine???????? Comedy without even mentioning sex?
Genius!
The mother (not named) was Barbara Bush...Nice of Flip not to mention that
Ya know I just don't laugh - like I am laughing now - when I watch comedy that drops the *F* bomb all the time.
What does that tell ya?
Flip is CLASS all the way!
Good bit, but in those days, Flip and his kind could do their bit, but unless your name was Sammy Davis Jr or Bill Cosby you could sit out on the couch with Johnny.

Max Power Was never cool. Always was lame
Flip Rocks!
Btw- What do you get when you mix an ostrich with laughter..... ................Johnny Carson!
Anyone have any idea what year this was done? My guess is mid-1960's. Great routine! ; )
First of all, that's a cigarette.
Secondly, he's standing. lol
Excellent.
He is one attractive guy!
@Poppyseed48 You are right it was not racist. It was just an ugly baby. They come in all shapes and color too. :)

Yes, that great talent is gone. He had a hugely popular show in the seventies, some of it is on dvd. Check it out.
Everybody smoked back then! It was healthy in the 60's.
