The history of Independence Day of India:
The history of Independence Day of India is a story of struggle, sacrifice and triumph. The Indian Independence movement began during World War I and was led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who advocated for non-violent resistance against British colonial rule. The movement gained momentum after the Quit India Movement in 1942, which called for an end to British occupation2. On August 15, 1947, India got its freedom, ending an almost 200-year British rule. However, the independence also came with the partition of the subcontinent into two countries, India and Pakistan, which resulted in widespread violence and displacement of millions of people. Since then, India has celebrated its Independence Day every year by hoisting the national flag and singing the national anthem. The Prime Minister also delivers a speech from the Red Fort in Delhi and announces various initiatives and achievements of the government. Independence Day is a day to remember the heroes who fought for India’s freedom and to celebrate the diversity and unity of the nation.
People celebrate Independence Day in India in various ways. Some of the common activities are:
Flag-hoisting ceremonies: People hoist the national flag at their homes, offices, schools and public places. The Prime Minister also hoists the flag at the Red Fort and delivers a speech.
Parades and drills: The armed forces and police display their skills and equipment in parades across the country. The most prominent parade is held in Delhi, where the President of India takes the salute.
Cultural programs: Various cultural events are organized in the state capitals and other places to showcase the diversity and richness of Indian culture. These include dances, songs, plays, recitations and exhibitions.
Patriotic displays: People decorate their surroundings with the tricolours of the national flag and wear clothes or accessories in the same colours. They also watch patriotic movies, listen to patriotic songs and read patriotic literature.
