I'm Jamaican too, but if you research deeper that's not true, you can't show any proof that some Jamaican went to the US and started toasting which started hip hop music. However, we did contribute to the origins of Hip Hop with things such as our sound system culture, bringing the big speakers out.

jamaica didnt recognize international copywrite laws untill like the mid 90s. in the 60s and 70s there was so many cover songs in jamaica, you could probably recreate the beatles catalog with jamaican covers.

In dancehall in Jamaica, MCs r called SELECTAS/SELECTORS because they r the person's who r responsible for selecting or choosing the right type of song to play to keep the crowd vibing. We call the artists DJ, short from Disc Jockey. The reason why is simply because these artists "rides the rhythm" just like a jockey riding a horse... smooth and flowing. Hence, whenever the SELECTAS/SELECTOR selects or play a sweet tune/chune or wicked rhythm, the artists grab the mic and rides that disc (45, LP or dubplate) like a champion jockey. This was back in the days, now a days, I have no idea what the youths call them. The SELECTAS have to have great knowledge of the genre, have to be able to read the crowd, have to feed off the crowd and have to have an awesome library to keep the crowd going
Dancehall and rap back in the late '80e to the mid ' '90s were intertwined from here in NY to LA back then you couldn't have a Rap song without a hip hop Dancehall mix but the powers that be shut that down the Dancehall artists like Buju banton Bounty killer that use to chat on dubplates alot of there lyrics were homophobic & that's why Sean Paul was the last superstar of this style of music in the early to mid 2000s so that's why they took up Reggaeton because it's not offensive
