it must have reminded him of his father telling him the story of bilbo and gandalf with the company of 13 dwarves on their journey to the lonely mountain
History will remember that there were two Tolkien and that the work of the second was almost as important as that of the first. Thank you Mr Christopher Tolkien
Christopher Tolkien died today at the age of 95. He was born on November 21, 1924. I'm not going to pretend to say I knew the man. I'm sure renowned scholars, celebrities and most of all family members could tell you how great this son was of JRR Tolkien. It's amazing that books still hold up well in the overconsuming advancement of technology in our world. I don't know how much of JRR tokens works remains unpublished to our world, but there's no denying that Christopher Tolkien was the true fan of The Middle-Earth series more than any of us. He could have lived his legacy for more self gain, but instead was humble enough to be a shadow of his father. Now he gets to rest and be with his mother and father. We lost a legend today from our mortal eyes to see, but as long as I exist, my family will always hear beautiful stories that started with a Hobbit that lived "In a hole in the ground".
He's 94 and very well for his age, sharp of mind and healthier than many other old people. God bless Christopher Tolkien, I'm proud that he has finished his father's work.
I normally hate seeing majestic cathedrals gutted and turned into horrible modern art galleries. But these beautiful tapestries are fitting of the space. I have tears in my eyes seeing Christopher's wonder-filled smile. He looks so much like his dad!
don't you see... the moment little Christopher Tolkien realized his father was alive and ok despite his fear otherwise -- that was a moment of eucatastrophe that brought little Christopher to tears, and one of those very tears of Joy, Restoration, etc...is part of that painting and now by extension part of the Rivendell tapestry as well.
Beautiful work!!! And it's so moving to listen Mr. Tolkien remembering his father. Thank you for so much!!! His father knew he left his works in the best hands ❤❤❤
And after finishing his last work, he now rests at long last, his deathbed in the country in which this very video takes place. I can only imagine what his last thoughts might have been. If his life were to flash before his eyes, would he not see with his very own eyes Gondolin? Rivendell? Lothlorien? To him these places were more real than Babylon. I for one hope he imagined green grass and white shores, with his Father and Mother surrounded with a host of every noble hearted member of the Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Men, and a Grey and White wizard with all the Ainur filling the dome that is the sky, taking part in Illuviatar's last long awaited theme after the end of all days.
Christopher John Reuel Tolkien. I wanted to type out your name because I wanted to say your name to you. I wonder what it would be like just to shake your hand. Christopher I love you. I love your family. There is true Magic in your families blood. I cannot thank you enough for continuing your father’s work. Sir thank you and much love. Sincerely Gordon
I would have cried had I gone to this gathering. His father was great but I think the son eclipesed the father in many ways. Whatever love, duty, and honor was in the father, it was magnified in his son. More than a chip off an old block, Christopher Tolkien was a long continuance of the branch. While I adore the Hobbit and LotR texts, my first read as an adult was The Lost Tales and the Silmarillion. 25 years had past since I read the first books and the movies had not come out so I was more familiar with LT and Sil. than LotR. Now, all of them rest at my bedside. RIP Christopher Tolkien.
A beautiful video - many thanks for sharing it with us - and many thanks to Christopher Tolkien for all his years of work to share his father's imagination with us!
I come back regularly to experience this deeply personal and moving vignette of CJRT, with Baillie there right beside him. I have adored you, Christopher, for over fifty years. I will be ever grateful for your life's work. If your father was Beren, then you are Dior Aranel, King of Elves. The world is no longer the same without you.
27 The skilful traveller leaves no traces of his wheels or footsteps; the skilful speaker says nothing that can be found fault with or blamed; the skilful reckoner uses no tallies; the skilful closer needs no bolts or bars, while to open what he has shut will be impossible; the skilful binder uses no strings or knots, while to unloose what he has bound will be impossible. In the same way the sage is always skilful at saving men, and so he does not cast away any man; he is always skilful at saving things, and so he does not cast away anything. This is called 'Hiding the light of his procedure.' Therefore the man of skill is a master (to be looked up to) by him who has not the skill; and he who has not the skill is the helper of (the reputation of) him who has the skill. If the one did not honour his master, and the other did not rejoice in his helper, an (observer), though intelligent, might greatly err about them. This is called 'The utmost degree of mystery.'
When speaker introduced his guests I had to laugh, completely devoid of any ill intent, after hearing for the very first time that name in French mode: _Tolkienne._ That's just precious =)
34 All-pervading is the Great Tao! It may be found on the left hand and on the right. All things depend on it for their production, which it gives to them, not one refusing obedience to it. When its work is accomplished, it does not claim the name of having done it. It clothes all things as with a garment, and makes no assumption of being their lord;--it may be named in the smallest things. All things return (to their root and disappear), and do not know that it is it which presides over their doing so;--it may be named in the greatest things. Hence the sage is able (in the same way) to accomplish his great achievements. It is through his not making himself great that he can accomplish them.
I'll never stop thanking Christopher for continuing his father's work. A hero.
he wasn't a nivce guy.
@@giannilyanicks1718 That's not the point. The point was the continuation of his father's legacy, which he did admirably well
@@giannilyanicks1718why do you Say so ?!!
The way he looks at these pictures, you can see the little kid being told all the stories at bedtime in his eyes
it must have reminded him of his father telling him the story of bilbo and gandalf with the company of 13 dwarves on their journey to the lonely mountain
Rest in peace Christopher Tolkien you wonderful man.

A nice little gem to see Christopher Tolkien's face when looking at his father's work and reminiscing about his childhood.

Why did he move to France?
Probably because he liked our country ^^
Requiescat in pace. ¿La señora es Priscilla o es la esposa de Christopher?
Ella era su esposa, ahora es viuda.
Who’s here from men of the west?
:,)
I shouldn't be able to see this
wait hes french.. ma vie est un mensonge
He was English but lived in France for almost 50 years and became a French citizen.
He became 95 on the 21st of November.. sad that he will be gone within a decade :(
You cursed it dude
well he lived long
Tolkien not this! Tolkien is catoliks, but not poganes!
Maybe a Catholic church should've hosted this event then.
This is a Catholic abbey.. what's your problem
He lived to 95. He lived a long life.
