No eeeeeeeeeego, no eeeeeeeeego. I'm not feeling 100% tonight so I canceled the gig ... I'm so unselfish. Now do as I say or else you're making this band ALL ABOUT YOU.
The best music should tell us what it requires because the best are like those Black Madonnas etched in stone, irrefutable. Gary is definitely is in point! It's best to not even play then have to work with cats that don't agree with musical standards already set in stone. The clones and non innovators are the sources of b.s most often because they take gigs away from more artistic innovative thinking folks by playing for less money often. They are the political types who are as bendable as tree limbs if money is their goal. Jazz has been destroyed holistically by many factors. Gary is one of the few real cats left! I've worked with him, Keter Betts and Lou Donaldson to name a few. They all kept it real...no b.s! Cats are showing up playing triplets ,fast scales/runs and mismatched cloned ideas with no 'stories," own sounds and feels most often.
What do you do when you don't really have an ego ... I'm stuck at the threshold of it just being a hobby and something more but I can't handle the praise and expectations and challenges I've encountered ... I wanted to show the world something but I didn't want anything for myself, but I love to be there, to perform. Walking contradiction.
Now that you've learned to deal with ego your next challenge is to learn to put others first and when you understand that deeply you'll realize yout ego can handle anything as long as your service is for the betterment of others. Realizing "No Self" doesn't mean your ego magically goes away. But the most important thing in a band is listening so your contribution is on target and meaningful and beneficial

That’s your ego afraid of getting bruised
