Tony Slattery brought happiness and joy into our lives in the late 1980s and early 1990s. At that time, my wife and myself were having a rough time in our careers and experiencing his daftness on 'Whose Line is It Anyway?' was a highlight to our week and helped us smile and laugh again. Today, we are both in our mid 60s, retired, with grown up children. We remember him with endearing fondness. Tony's death is a sombre reminder of the transience of life. Rest in peace dear man.
I read an interview done with Tony from about 5-6 years ago in the Guardian - very poignant and I hope the intervening years were good to him and his much beloved Mark. RIP Tony.
Me too, it was one of those ‘so that why we’ve not heard from him’, along with of course feeling terribly sorry for him. They which generated a lot of offers snd actual help.
Oh no, what sad news, he was a lovely man and great talent. Thanks for letting us know Tim, and for such a wonderful tribute. Another genius gone too soon.
Just before I most sensibly deleted twitter, and by some gorgeous fluke, I had a number of online conversations and general banter with Tony. He was always kind, funny, interested and irreverent in the most delightful fashion. He very graciously sent me a few mementos in the post and I'll treasure them forever. "Oh Captain, my captain..."
I'm so glad you've done a video about this Professor Tim. I was so sad to hear Tony had died. I remember having a huge crush on him back in the 90s and thought he was incredibly funny. He also seemed like a genuinely gentle chap and, much like many of the great and clever comedic talents, a tortured soul. I'm so sorry for his partner, yet very glad he had that great love in his life.
Thank you for this tribute. You expressed my own feelings very well when I heard Tony's death announced on the radio. I was very glad when he started to perform successfully again. It's sad that he died so soon after he re-established his career.
Very sad news and a dignified tribute to him. I had a huge teenage crush on Tony and was delighted to get to meet him after a live Whose Line show one night. Awful to think how much he was suffering even back then, but glad to know he had such wonderful support in his partner over the years. I hope he now gets similar help and support from those around him now after losing his precious other half.😢
loved tony Slattery ...he was my favourite on who's line ..my dad would let me stay up to watch it ❤ ...if anyone has not seen the crying game ...i can't recommend it enough .
I'm ashamed to admit that I had forgotten about Tony Slattery as had not seen him since the 90's. I had no idea about his struggles, they very much echo my own...what a beautiful gental soul, I'm sure he has now found his peace & is free of his turmoil, my heart goes out to his partner what a lovely selfless man. Mental illness and addiction are a bastard and the system that is supposed to help is so flawed and broken, it really is. Recent comments by Mr Blair sum it up! Very sad state of affairs indeed.
Whose line was the cornerstone of my teenage years Friday night viewing; left the UK in 98, so lost touch with many things there. Startled to see him again so many years later much changed, the vigour of youth gone grey with furrowed lines ingrained; a once mellifluous voice now shale and gravel. Inwardly, the same, sweet Tony.
So very sorry to learn of Tony Slattery's passing, someone who never failed to bring me hours of laughter. But what is it about our comedy stars and depression and bi polar? Tony was not the only one. Spike Milligan, Tony Hancock, Peter Sellers, and countless others I could name who bring laughter and joy to us, but off screen and stage suffer terribly from this terrible disease. My condolences to his family and friends. I will be watching some of his stellar performances on Whose Line Is It Anyway? in tribute to a very funny and a very brave man who spoke out openly about his struggle with Bi polar and gave hope to his fellow sufferers.
Thank you for this video. I think it used to be a Friday night, maybe it was on Saturdays, but I loved those nights watching TV together, my mum, dad, and younger brother, we'd have lasagne and chips and watch Whose Line is It Anyway. Didn't know how lucky I was! Happy simple times.Thank you for the laughs Tony. I thought you were very handsome and there was something of a rare tropical bird about you, I had a thing about your voice (no I didn't fancy you I just LOVED your voice). Sad to learn you had such hard time of it and so sad to think you've been taken so early, but please: also the good times, the good looks! the talent! pain and torment doesn't mean we wasted time. Everyone's life matters. The hermit times and the rage matters. It isn't easy and God knows I wish you and Mark could have had it easier, but it matters! You lived out your days with the love of your life and that is not wasted time. RIP dear boy. Will remember you with such fondness xxx
I absolutely adored him - he was my first celebrity crush in my teens. I watched everything he was in - including some obscure things not even mentioned online, like the etiquette-based panel show Ps & Qs - I just found his presence enchanting, the sparkle in his eye, his mastery of the very English way of being cheeky and rude without downright obscenity - so admirable and alluring, despite the fact that I didn't lust for him physically I could easily have fallen for those charms. Perhaps 65 isn't a bad innings for someone who suffered so much both physically and mentally. I never did get to meet him, I have long wished that I had. I am not an emotional guy generally, and usually don't indulge in the outpouring surrounding celebrity deaths. But this man truly spoke to me.
A lovely eulogy. He was the jewel of WLIIA. It was upsetting to follow his decline and physical deterioration from a sharp and very good looking young man into a prematurely aged and haunted figure. It wasn't a huge surprise to hear of his death but it's no less upsetting.
I loved him... 😢...Tony had a hairline which I found quite nice rather rare to see and it was something that was unique to him.... I watched every programme he was in... Rest in Peace beautiful man.... 💔😢
My sincere condolences. I'm sorry to say I have never heard of him but will familiarize myself now. I think it's great he was able to connect with the world and make them laugh, in spite of his own struggles. His life ALSO may be inspirational to others who have a mental health issue of some sort and further, that it's often NOT people who are 'mentally ill' doing violence against others, but rather all the 'normal' people in power.
I just honestly hope that he enjoyed his time "beneath the surface of normality", so to speak. I don't judge ANYBODY for whatever paths they may take. I've certainly taken my own incorrect directions in life, and have taken similar routes to him just like so many others. So just... Good luck to you all out there. Try and keep handle on your personal demons. It IS possible to.
Sad news, Tony’s great gift of comedy and the contrast between his inner, crippling vulnerability and outer jo(k)e de vivre, made his life story bittersweet to the last.
When I was a young man, I was a little envious of Slattery (not jealous, jealousy seems malevolent to me) handsome, popular funny successful (presumably wealthy) I would have swapped places in a heartbeat, be careful what you wish for if you don't know the whole story
When I hear here his name the show 'Just a Gigilo' always springs to mind, I barely remember the content but I remember laughing my head off on the floor, I was about 14 at the time.
Oh my, another tormented almost amusing comic has died. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth among the luvies as they ouze from the woodwork which they now infest...
This one hits very close to home. I had some marvellous conversations with him at various music and comedy business bashes. He was a gentle guy, persued by his own internal demons. But a very funny and talented actor, I always found never less than interesting to watch. I only last saw him in person, at a friend's sixtieth birthday party a few years back. He was looking very well, and on the wagon.
I Only Know him from "Kingdom". He was Great and I saw an Interview where he said he was Strung-Out and his Good Friend Stephen Fry took a chance on him and cast him.
I've never heard of the man until today. May he rest well but its good to see you're still around with your wittiness. (I'm in my third year of uni and its hard, but your essay video from all those years ago still inspires me).
I'm saddened by any loss. Frankly. I hate death. The bible calls it the last enemy to be defeated. And I thank God for His resurrection. Granting an indestructible life to our wonderful High Priest and saviour. Yeshua ha Meschiach. Death will be swallowed up in victory. O grave, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? God will bring it all to account. You can be sure.
R.I.P Tony Slattery.🙏
A gifted man who brought much to many. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Tony was a tormented soul with a big heart
Got it in one
I loved him in everything. He had a hard time. Creative people are so vulnerable sometimes.
Like the Rochdale girls ...he made poor choices.
Miserable and awful cocaine and alcohol addiction .These things kill years after you have given them up.
He looked dreadful in the photo
Just before I most sensibly deleted twitter, and by some gorgeous fluke, I had a number of online conversations and general banter with Tony. He was always kind, funny, interested and irreverent in the most delightful fashion. He very graciously sent me a few mementos in the post and I'll treasure them forever. "Oh Captain, my captain..."
Soppy as it sounds, I just had to give my "Slattery Will Get You Nowhere!" badge a rub. Goodnight, you lovely man, goodnight.
I'm so glad you've done a video about this Professor Tim. I was so sad to hear Tony had died. I remember having a huge crush on him back in the 90s and thought he was incredibly funny. He was one of the best.
He was a great guy was Tony Slattery. I'm so sad to hear about it. A very clever and talented man. I used to watch Whose Line is it Anyway. RIP 🙏
Damn, that's no age to die. The world is a worse place without him.
It is for the drug and alcohol addicted.
Average life expectancy 55.
Thank you for this tribute. You expressed my own feelings very well when I heard Tony's death announced on the radio. I was very glad when he started to perform successfully again. It's sad that he died so soon after he re-established his career.
A shining light when I was growing up, in so many ways a role model for me and many others. RIP
65 with his history well done legend

Indeed.

Yes professor he was a beautiful human being ❤

Such sad news , I used to love him in Whose Line is it Anyway? back in the day . RIP Tony
Very talented man, RIP
Slattery was brilliant. A troubled man. Rest in Peace Tony.
Bye bye Tony, man, loved seeing you on TV in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s...
Then I missed you from the 2000s onwards. 🥲🥹
Very sad news. RIP Tony.❤
Truly tragic in this day and age for someone still "fairly young" to pass like this. I suspect he had a lot left in his repertoire to give.
Very sad news - an incredible talent .
An obituary almost Tim well said RIP and god bless Tony I remember him well
Thx prof.
He vanished and made a documentary as to why. He looked 10 years older than he was. An old man at 60.
That is sad news.
That's very sad. Loved him on who's line.
Was here 👋
A lovely eulogy. He was the jewel of WLIIA. It was upsetting to follow his decline and physical deterioration from a sharp and very good looking young man into a prematurely aged and haunted figure. It wasn't a huge surprise to hear of his death but it's no less upsetting.
Another comic genius with funny bones sadly taken, RIP Tony, thank you for the laughter.
He was hilariously funny. May he Rest Peacefully.
I'll miss the anticipation of seeing the name Tony Slattery following by the word 'in' because it always was time well spent.
Thanks Tony,thanks professor 🥺
He was very talented. I was shocked when he went doolally, obviously had some real mental issues.
RIP Tony Slattery.🙏
I knew him from Whose line and Red Dwarf.
R.I.P
I loved him... 😢...Tony had a hairline which I found quite nice rather rare to see and it was something that was unique to him....
I watched every programme he was in...
Rest in Peace beautiful man.... 💔😢
Woah. Tony Slattery? How sad.
Been watching him since the '80s & I never even knew he was gay until I just read about him today. Always liked him & sad to hear he's gone - RIP.
Nice, thoughtful tribute . Thanks Prof
Mr Slattery was incredible. World is a little less funny today.
RIEP Tony.
RIP Tony!😢😢
Oh, sad news. 😔
Condolences to his family
Very sad. Great performer.

Kind and thoughtful words. Compassion.
They should bring back who's line is it anyway I'd actually watch that
Rip Tony super charming guy
funny guy - troubled complex soul - RIP Tony Slattery gone too soon
"Trouble soul"? A cocaine addict.
Sad news, Tony’s great gift of comedy and the contrast between his inner, crippling vulnerability and outer jo(k)e de vivre, made his life story bittersweet to the last.

A naturally funny man and very intelligent.
When I hear here his name the show 'Just a Gigilo' always springs to mind, I barely remember the content but I remember laughing my head off on the floor, I was about 14 at the time.
The tears of a clown.
RiP not such a ripe old age.
Oh my, another tormented almost amusing comic has died. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth among the luvies as they ouze from the woodwork which they now infest...
At least he will be missed...

I told him how much I was looking forward to seeing his mature work.
I Only Know him from "Kingdom". He was Great and I saw an Interview where he said he was Strung-Out and his Good Friend Stephen Fry took a chance on him and cast him.
Very sad to hear of Tony's passing and it is also worth noting that John Sessions is no longer with us.
Nicely done. Such a pity. He's gone too soon.
This is extremely sad news. I, too, remember Slattery in 'Whose Line is it Anyway?' and I found the 2020 documentary very touching. RIP Mr Slattery.
I've never heard of the man until today. May he rest well but its good to see you're still around with your wittiness.

Voice like S. Fry. Where did you get your Smeg fridge?
Very sad . There are many many Tony's, many without the love support and talent that he was blessed with. Mental illness can be the cruelest illness.
Well bent
