A traditional American work song/shanty that Martin Simpson arranged for two guitars. Tony recorded it with him recently for one of his albums.

Yeah, I think he's great. Very musical, very skillful and very entertaining. I love the way he emulates bagpipe ornamentation on the Scottish tunes (this tune isn't one of those). Not bad for a guy who's self-taught!

Thanks for that. But I don't think it's an American song - more English or even Australian.

You can pick up a copy of the tab from Martin Simpsons web site!

I purchased the tab from Martin Simpson's website. It doesn't come close to what is being played here. Not a complaint, just an observation.

Thank you for posting this. As far as I'm aware this is the only video of this arrangement on the net. I know because I've been looking for one to help figure out how to play it for ages. Thanks again.

No problem. I just bought a couple of Ed Gerhard disks, and he does a lovely version. Good luck!

Forgive a comparison that is probably unfair given the compressed audio of youtube, but this guitar is rather thin in tonal range - and whatever I do I cannot remotely hear in these PRS Angelus signature models the depth of beauty of the Greenfield guitar or indeed a fine Martin such as the OM21. Paul R. Smith it seems is so greedy to dominate guitar making worldwide and is turning our beloved guitarists (such as Tony and Martin Simpson) into salespeople for his ambitions. What we lose is hearing our favourite guitarists playing really fine instruments. Anyway, thankyou Tony for the playing which I love ..

+Evelyn Soreen Can't comment on the compression. The recording chain is a Rode Videomic Pro, miked on-camera but still fairly close & taped on a Canon HV40 prosumer grade camcorder. Processing was via iMovie 11, with a slightly non-standard encoder chosen more for it's handling of certain colours (greens, as I recall). After that God knows what sort of compression TH-cam applies, and how your home computer plays it back. Kind of a miracle when you think about it! Oh yeah - the sound man and stage mics are always a bit of a wild card!

@@motoronna Last time I checked, it was Tony playing the guitar, Not Paul R. Smith. If Tony wanted to play another instrument, he is a big boy, he could play what he wanted. I've heard him play this model, live, a number of times and was always impressed with both Tony's playing and the tone of the instrument. How you were able to incorporate the word "greed" in your comments about this performance is absolutely astounding to me.

what kind of tuning is this? Don't have a guitar at hand at the moment, otherwise I would immediately check it :)
