      @Speaking Truth first I just wanna say I'm not here to fight, but they also didn't get a specialist's/2nd opinion(or at least I missed it if she said they did). I was diagnosed with leukemia and trust me they double check and if they still think you have cancer, they check EVERYTHING. All of your body counts(platelets, blood cell count, etc). I know it's a different type of cancer, but they really do make SURE you have cancer if they think you have cancer. They usually do the least evasive thing first. In my case, it was getting my platelets up because they were dangerously low, almost non-existent anymore.
      P.S: I know your comment is a few months old, but just wanted to put this out there.

    • @Martina-tb3eg
      @Martina-tb3eg 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Speaking Truth Okay, I can see your point. I agree that they were probably following their own protocol during this time as protocols tend to differ from doctor to doctor.
      I do, however, still wonder why they didn't think to test for Mono (just in case) during that whole month they kept pushing back chemo and trying to find the one cell that would confirm that he had Hodgkin's.
      Even more so given the fact that they thought it was deadly and advancing VERY quickly. You know, on the off chance that maybe it really, hopefully, was Mono since they (apparently) share similar symptoms.
      In this particular case, I feel like completely ruling out mono caused more harm than it did good. They were trying to save him and did what they thought was right at the time so I'm not saying sue them like other comments say, but maybe at least contest the bill for the treatment of non-existent Hodgkin's.
      P.S: Sorry I basically wrote a book in reply to you.

    • @kayleeforster8121
      @kayleeforster8121 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Speaking Truth In Canada they ALWAYS do least invasive to most invasive. In this case all they needed was blood work, and honestly that would have shown the Mono AND the cancer, but bloodworks a lot cheaper than digging in a man's neck, and they gotta pull a profit somehow. Gross.

    I believe the doctors had the best intentions but listening to patients n family members is something we can do more of. While I was in med school I went through almost exactly the same thing as them with my mom. She was misdiagnosed with lymphoma and had an extremely invasive and risky surgery for a large biopsy very close to the heart and great vessels. Meanwhile, I repeatedly ask if they would consider sarcoidosis, a disease with very similar picture to what she had but usually occurs in younger patients. And saying to exclude sarcoidosis then a minimally invasive biopsy is enough. They look at me with pitty as the naive med student who just read a page in a reference and is in denial of her mother's illness. Long story short it was sarcoidosis which meant a year of steroids and she was better immediately. She still had a huge scar in her chest back/side and we are eternally grateful for her health.

    You said a perfect phrase: when you go through something like this together, you don’t want to waste any minute to get your life started”. I feel the same way. Right now I battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma and I am very lucky to have the man I love by my side. We are planning our wedding in this August and I hope that by that time all the treatments will be finished and maybe I will have hair already :D
    Edit: a Month and a half ago we celebrated our wedding. Unfortunately I’m still sick and have chemo every two weeks. Somehow this video again showed up on my recommended page and I watched it again. Started bawling immediately and now Just praying to get better and healthy.

    • @nico2186
      @nico2186 7 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      laura butler I disagree, I think that they should have sued because the hospital made a huge mistake that could have probably cost him his life if they went on with the chemotherapy. They also should have had better doctors because they didn’t catch that the
      problem was Mono and just assumed it was something bigger than that. He had a near death experience from a problem that could have been fixed way easier than what the doctors had originally done. It’s not selfish, it’s the truth....

    Your boyfriend story is similar to my own. I went through the exact same things. My neck hurt really bad one day in high school in March 2016, my school nurse immediately told me that I need to go see an ENT. The ENT gave me medication to reduce the swelling in my neck and it went away for awhile. Right after my high school graduation and swelling came back and the doctor gave me more medication, but it didn’t really go away. So he decides to do a needle biopsy and took a sample. It came back as cancer and everything else escalated at that point we found out it was non-Hodgkin’s lymph Oma as well. And it was just a long road from there. Going through chemotherapy, attending college, and just trying to have a social life at the same time does very difficult. My boyfriend stuck through it with me that whole entire time since high school and we had only been dating about 4-5 months. But, I am happy to say that I am now cancer free as of April 2017. I am still recovering though.

    I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma august of 2016. I had missed two of my surgeons calls waiting for the results after my biopsy. At the appointment for my results he said he was glad I had missed his calls because he had initially thought my mass was benign so he was trying to call with good news. Later after he had called me he was informed that it wasn't benign. So he was happy he didn't get my hopes up but also sad to have diagnosed me with lymphoma. I'm glad you and your husband didn't have to go through it. I'm still fighting !

      I’ve worked in the medical field and I went to college for premed as well as technical college for my certifications and I can promise you that there are far too many doctors whose goal is not to save lives but to make money. there are way too many doctors who don’t genuinely care for each of their patients and I’ve seen it first hand. patients who have insane blood work that shows there’s something wrong, people with really weird test results and doctors completely dismissing it because it’s not important to them to make sure their patients are okay. doctors like that shouldn’t be allowed to continue with no repercussions just because they’re doing the bare minimum of their job and people who suffer because of these people who have no business being a doctor 100% deserve to sue.

    As I doctor I can only imagine what you and your boyfriend had gone through. The waiting, the uncertainy, it must be so hard for anyone who has to go through something like this or knows someone who goes through something like this. We doctors are only humans as well, we make mistake, but by god, we ALWAYS try to do out best. Sometimes we fail, yes, but many many many times we win and save someone‘s life. And there are those few moments, someone‘s life isn‘t in our hands anymore and there is nothing we can do. We feel the pressure of the person and their family in our backs, we hear horror stories of colleagues who where sued for basically nothing. I am so lucky to work in an European country where sueing a doctor is quite hard and the doctors always have the hospital’s security. Unless we really f* up, we are treated as humans.

    My dad was falsely diagnosed with tongue cancer a few years ago
    He went to many doctors and had many tests and pieces of his tongue cut off for testing and still no answers
    Eventually he went to a doctor who noticed a broken tooth
    Turns out this broken tooth was causing the irritation on his tongue
    All he needed was for the tooth to be removed
    After countless doctors appointments, pain , and money.
    We were furious I was so terrified because I had no idea what would happen to my dad I had no knowledge of tongue cancer and to find out it was something so minuscule and all those doctors didn’t notice after checking his mouth countless times
    It was so frustrating but the relief of knowing that my dad was okay diminished some of the anger towards the doctors who made mistakes

    This was adorable! I'm glad this didn't end as badly as it could've. When/If you guys have kids, you should tell this to them when the get older. It's a really cool story.

    • @derjalenrock
      @derjalenrock 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tasha Knight no one is saying anything like that. To the general public, all of these medical bills plus the stress of having (or in this case thinking) cancer is troublesome. I’m sure, if anything, they’ll just sue to pay off the bills.

  • @shamarsha

    I’m glad there was a happy ending to this story but I still would of sued!!

    • @hitokiriheero

      Shalise M. On what grounds would you sue

    • @shamarsha
      @shamarsha 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hitokiriheero Based on my friend and her past experience with telling the hospital that she had one thing going on and them not listening and charging her insurance and risking her life to test her for this and that ..... I’ll just say this ..my friend too almost lost her life to a similar situation. My friend sued the hospital simply bc her lawyer was able to prove medical fraud and malpractice. In this couples case it wouldn’t of hurt let a medical malpractice lawyer determine whether there was a case here but as this young lady stated the couple wasn’t interested in pursuing a case. The couples reasoning was very understandable however I merely stated my opinion as thousands of other people have in the comment section.

    • @hitokiriheero
      @hitokiriheero 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Shalise M. I don't know about your friends case but in this case I don't see any fraud or negligence at all. In fact these doctors saved his moms life and what you want to do is sue the doctors so they don't even want to help patients in the future and more people who need treatment who can't get it. You just say sue without giving any reason.

    I'm sorry but if you don't sue, I will. They didn't do it cause they cared, they did it cause they want to feel "professional" and actively disregarded your suggestion even without testing.

    • @hitokiriheero
      @hitokiriheero 7 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      sharon obaisi no they did it to rule out a deadly disease called lymphoma which left untreated would've killed him. It had nothing to do with feeling "professional". Even if it was positive
      For mono they needed to make sure he didn't have cancer. It is unprofessional to dismiss possibility of him having cancer and just stating it is mono. Especially when it runs in his family.

    • @maryandchild
      @maryandchild 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      they had to rule out cancer because mono often presents WITH cancer. so if they didn't rule out cancer in this unusual presentation of mono and diagnosed him with JUST mono, they might miss cancer.

    Epstein-Barr Virus (aka the virus that causes mono/mononucleosis) is EXTREMELY associated with a rapidly aggressive cancer known as Burkitt's lymphoma that presents in a very, very similar fashion. I'm glad your physicians took the initiative to act in a worst-case-scenario approach. Medicine isn't as clear-cut as the general population may think. I'm glad everything turned out well for you both for your collective health and your relationship. :)

      Sanah agree 100%. I'm so disappointed on how buzzfeed presented this. His doctors probably just wanted to cover bases because that didn't look like a typical presentation of mono. Imagine if it is indeed cancer and they just brushed it off. Just a few months, weeks or even days later the cancer could have spread all over. They would be blaming the doctors then for not doing anything.. 😣

      Sanah I get that but this dude went through three weeks of unnecessary pain. You can actively treat mono while waiting for the results of the biopsy for cancer. Like his neck got infected because of the surgery

    So many clear warning signs that they should have gone elsewhere. You cannot just say yes to everything a doctor says.

    • @Jodat1
      @Jodat1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they went else were they would have said it’s most likely cancer. the doctors never say it’s for sure they go of evidence and the huge amount of reason to believe that it was scanner she probably lied about that because they still tested for different things.

    We do live in a society that forces us to 100% believe in authority figures and not question them, that's why it took me a trip into the er before I found out why I was sick. After 4 months of random expanding pain in my stomach and an unsuccessful trip to the doctor (which include one doctor telling me it could be anything under the sun, to a nurse telling me it was probably just gas), I found out it was a stone stuck in the neck of my gall bladder. I had surgery to remove it later that week.

      Ok don’t believe the people that went to school for years and were trained to do it and your never forced to believe them and they aren’t an authority figure they are just doctors they are the same as a builder of accountant you believe them because they know more than you
