Everyone goes out too fast - it's just a fact of life!!! Great tips - sleep is probably the most important in my experience, even over shorter distances. I can run 5k sub 20mins in my 50s. Bad sleep this week meant i was off that by quite sone way today. It is so overlooked by so many runners.
If you live in a hot climate, don't rely on the aid stations.. They are way too far apart to match your actual hydration needs. Take a flask or running vest with you.
Your first mistake is absolutely correct, I know because I made it. Many training plans recommend doing a shorter race during training. Then you can use a pace predictor to estimate your half pace, and that will help you not go out too fast.
Ive got 4 tips ... Train properly... Wear the correct trainers....sleep....have a poo before you start . I did neither of these on my last one, took someones entry who didnt want to do it , the night before.. absolutely terrible.

Try to get info on the race course, is it flat, hilly etc. My first HM was a hill fest and it destroyed me 😂
Chris what shoe like Adios 3 do you rate? I prefer the firm feel of the addidas shoes - what yah reckon pal? (Hope recovery going well)
you should do some keyups
Hope you are better now🦾
Mistake number 2 - diet. Think about your diet. Nice one cheers 👍🏻😂

Your heart rate will be much higher on race day than in your training block. Another reason not to go out too fast and don’t be alarmed by it.
Aid station just a joke especially in the heat
