I was only aware of the firecrackers being used in the UK on foggy mornings, where you would not be able to see a signal at danger. On such mornings a guy would make his way to the tracks near a signal, and would place the firecrackers when the signal was switched to danger - removing them when it was set to clear. There were two identified issues with this, it does not "fail-safe", and the poor guy is placing and removing explosive charges on the track in front of a train!! The "fail-safe" issue was that, train driver stops when he hears 3 bangs, but what if he doesn't hear them? Is the line clear? Did the guy not get to the line yet? It was this safety issue that resulted in the GWR pioneering the Automatic Warning System (AWS) in 1906 - and it's why even in the 1980s, a Red Light was signaled by a horn, and a Green by a bell - since the system used an electric current to signal Safe (and sound the electric bell in cab), any failure in the electric circuit would cause a Danger indication. I was not aware of drivers (or guards) carrying firecrackers as a safety feature. In the US flares were easy, readily available and cheap, so it was not so much of an issue to provide a supply to any train crews.

It’s heavy your trying to pull the train up with the loco engine break only witch is the bottom lever top lever is your train brake witch brings on the hole train you stop a lot quicker.

Question in one of your videos you pushed one of the cars without an engine. I just can't seem to find the video on the keys you used to move it along it was at the front of Whittier station. Thank You 🛤 Or does that only work in sandbox mode?

I don't remember using keys to do that but in sandbox mode you can place and I think move cars using the mouse. I only used sandbox mode though on the 1st video in Bryson. Is it possible that I hit a wagon too hard and it didn't have brakes on and moved. I was then fumbling hitting keys to put the brake on it and you thought I was controlling it?
